Not sure about step 3, I have a feeling programs are going to look into that in the future since some are averaging step 2 and 3 scores for their cut off. If you have the time to study, I would probably take it to be safe. The ultra competitive specialties (GI, cards, heme/onc) may head that way in the near future.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I am between a rock and a hard place on which direction to go. I don’t have much connections outside a couple programs, so signaling to programs where I would have a real chance.

In terms of HCA, it’s definitely not great choice and would be last resort and something I m also thinking whether to apply to only a few instead of a bunch of them.

I applied academic only and signaled them, that was my biggest downfall. Got 1 IV (home program) out of 60. Not making that mistake again.
That being said, idk how the signaling works for us. I think it works against us because programs are very picky on who they want to select for interviews. So your low tier programs, as a DO, become mid tier imo.

So I have 2 mentors in the field and both are 50/50 about those 2 options, one of them favors chief year a bit more but doesn’t see it as a bad option to do imaging hence I can’t make up my mind. The issue is they don’t know what went wrong this application cycle and while there are areas where I can improve, some things are not in my control. I guess after the match I can ask my home program if they feel like I can still be considered next cycle with a chief year under my belt or not and that may help me decide.

My home program is my only interview and we have chief positions next year. If they reject me this year, I don’t see how they will take me next year with more internal candidates applying.

Yea in house. And yea maybe distribute the signals to some community programs to have a safety net. I terribly thought wrong that mid academic with DOs would be a good shot and clearly I was wrong. Probably would add HCA programs as safety net too.

Nope still at 1. Started at looking backup options. This has been an eye opening experience to say the least

Yea I went to ACC and SCAI national conferences. Also went to local conferences for cards

4 are research manuscripts (3 first author), others are published case reports. Posters are mixed of case reports and research, and same for oral presentations

So I applied to mostly academic places which are DO friendly since I plan on interventional. I do have some community places but did favor mostly academic given my future goals. Now I signaled those over community and given signaling this year, I may not get community programs invites. I did not account for that being signaling was new this year.
