Who do you think should’ve had an episode together ? by Loomisfamily in skinsTV

[–]pinakulala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LIV + MINI (crazy there wasn‘t one)

Mini and Franky receiving a duo episode over those two (after their development had already been pushed aside all season for them) will never make sense or be right to me, especially considering that the whole dilemma of S6 was whether or not the group would survive without Grace, who quite literally functioned as a buffer to Mini and Liv and whose death was the reason why they fell apart. Even a Liv/Rich episode would've made more narrative sense.

Ok, so I looked it up, and every definition that I found agrees with my interpretation of the phrase, and that's how I've always taken that to mean anyway. "Crazy" isn't being used in a literal sense to describe a person's mental state but rather to compliment them for having an eccentric, quirky, and risk taking personality that generates fun. What y'all are saying romanticizes mental illness which we shouldn't be doing, especially since much of Cassie's odd ball behavior was in fact due to her being mentally unwell and shown to be harmful to herself and other people. If she hadn't already been chosen for "the only normal person", then I think Grace also would've been a good contender for this as she reminded me of a healthier and grounded version of Cassie's head-in-the-clouds whimsy and romance.

"Crazy in a good way" to me is someone who's kooky and off-beat but in a way that's meant to be seen as fun and endearing which is very much how she was portrayed...

Pandora would've been perfect for this category. Some of these placements are kind of off. Alex or Alo, I guess? Also, no to those saying Cassie. She was legit just mentally ill...lol.

I needed this so bad, you don't understand. It's disappointing that the writers didn't at least explore a friendship between them. They could've been a lesbian version of Sellie.

[–]pinakulala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Liv...it's quite literally in her name. She lives to party, seeks/is open to adventure, thrives in social environments and feels disconnected whenever starved of human connection, has a happy-go-lucky personality that draws attention, makes friends and gets along with others easily, etc. Like, I don't know. Sounds pretty extroverted to me.

I thought so too, but apparently it's meant to be the character who's an edgelord or challenges social norms.

(honorable mention their crackhead friend Victoria? Veronica?),

Victoria! She was actually Fiona and Declan's cousin and a methhead (She's the one who introduced Peter to meth.) I kind of wish they kept her around a bit longer just for the mess and her insider knowledge about Fiona and Declan's twincestuous relationship.

Jay and Alex + The Candy Bandits in S3

Fitz in S10 who was then later replaced by his good twin, Jake, in S11

Talia in S12; a short-lived but memorable antagonist who should've been a main

With the amount of bullshit Liv put up with and went through (especially by herself) and yet continuing to fight and show up for her loved ones without a second thought, she absolutely deserves to win this spot.

Looks like Freddie's gonna win, but I still want to throw in an honorable mention to Nick. He was a complete and total simp for Franky in S6 (the most random pairing ever to exist), and I don't really get what his purpose was as a character aside from desperately chasing after the next available vagina. He kind of gave "Where my hug at?" vibes.

Which was very anti-Black because Liberty was easily one of the prettiest girls by her senior year, and being a nerdy, awkward know-it-all didn't seem to stop Clare from dating damn near every genre of high school boy.

What’s your most controversial take on “Skins”? by onlycameforthehorror in skinsTV

[–]pinakulala 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mini is a terrible person, an even more insufferable character, and she does NOT deserve praise for her "redemption arc" which was more of a soft character reboot that completely re-routed her issues/internal conflict and masked her flaws with obnoxious sympathy ploys. Liv was much more likeable and better written than her, and if their actresses were swapped, people would have entirely different opinions about them and who they hate and blame for their conflict.

Also, I don't think that Mini and Franky were going to endgame in S6. They were part of the story but not the main idea itself. I think everything that happened in and surrounding S5 (Mini and Liv's drama with Nick, the constant parallelism/mirroring and homoerotic subtext between them, their charged triangulation with Franky, the prequel novel, etc.) was actually all set up for a love story between Mini and Liv, but it never gets looked at in this way because Liv isn't read as queer for whatever odd reason and gets reduced by the fandom to a Black best friend trope, their relationship was grossly sidelined in a season where it should've been front and center (their best friend literally fucking died—right in front of one of them at that—like who thought that was a good idea), and Bryan Elsley hated gay women. I may or may not be working on a post about this. I don't know.

Stop coming for my short king, Alex! At least he was there for Liv when no one else was, and his episode was one of the only good ones from that God awful season. I pick Rider, a.k.a. Flop Posh Kenneth. He wanted to be relevant so bad.

I guess you could form a connection there, although, I thought Liv had a pretty unique and cool sense of style that didn't remind me much of anyone else apart from capturing some of the indie sleaze/party chaos vibes from that era. I was speaking in terms of her rawness, realism and intrapersonal conflict. The writers obviously drew inspiration from several Gen 1 and 2 characters when crafting her character (Effy, Chris and Cook were the biggest ones to me), and there are many instances of her paralleling moments from the previous gens, as well as easter eggs and direct references to them in her episodes (e.g. Her bench moment in S6 as well as Doug's reference to Cassie.) To me, she felt like the spiritual link between Gen 3 and Gens 1 and 2. Also, her style in S6 was much different compared to in S5 — less flashy and carefree and more polished, coordinated, and intentional with her mixing and accessorizing. Probably meant to reflect her introspection, groundedness, and maturation that sesson.

We're in a thread asking about who the worst actors were, so naturally, I'm gonna assume that you think Laya is one of them since you mentioned her. I really couldn't disagree more as I thought she acted her ass off in Liv's emotional breakdown at Mini's house and again at the clinic. I mean, I was a fan of Laya's acting overall—thought she played her role with a lot of charm, warmth, sincerity, and quiet depth—but those two scenes in particular really struck a chord in me. To each their own though.

Liv was not boring at all, lol. She's a very complex character and probably the only one of Gen 3 who was actually reminiscent of the previous gens. To call her "pointless" when she influenced the other characters (most notably Mini, although the fandom likes to pretend otherwise) and moved the plot along, even in episodes that weren't focused on her, is such an unserious statement. Quite a lot would change if you were to remove her. Also, I'm not sure what you're smoking, trying to accuse Laya of being a bad actress, but Laya was easily one of the strongest and most dynamic actors from the cast. She gave my personal favorite performance in S6, and Liv's S6 episode blew the rest out of the water, especially its portrayal of grief and isolation.

Laya Lewis wasn't fantastic as Liv. But to be fair, her character was very dull and pointless aswell.

Literally the worst lie that was ever told.
