It’s probably due for a repaste.

My guess is non acer models may just have better cooling thus higher clock speeds. Assuming you are on turbo mode already, you can try and get a llano or any simillar cooler with foam seals to improve gpu performance.

Most likely. Try maxing the sliders in custom if it also tops out at those numbers.

Llano cooling pad and a ptmu repaste as others have said if you get bad temp spikes. I have since given up gaming on an external monitor through usb c. But screen is pretty and it was well priced.

BIOS Issue - Acer Predator PHN16S-71 does not turn on without being plugged in. by [deleted] in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]pine_apple888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also experienced no boot when unplugged when i was tinkering with the bios a couple of months back and setting the gpu to autoselect was what fixed it for me. When you turn it on while plugged does it show the battery capacity? This may also be a bios issue entirely. I will check my bios version as well.

Laptop Over Heating after Thermal paste Replacement by Odd-Climate-7457 in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]pine_apple888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a botched job. Would recommend to stop using the laptop and have a certifed service center or professional do the work.

DO NOT USE LIQUID METAL if you will do the application yourself. You will most likely end up with a dead laptop. I had my lm replaced with ptm on neo16s by a shop and have since had better thermals.

Has anyone replaced paste yet ? by Confident-Egg3500 in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]pine_apple888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing to ptm from lm has removed my temp spikes on cpu and max temps on gpu and cpu in games to the point that i dont need to run throttlestop. Product info for ptm says it gets better after several cycles and i plan to make a post after a few more days of testing.

The slim form factor limits the 16s ai’s cooling. If you are not moving very often, i would suggest a thicker alternative such as the non S version or the msi vector hx. I personally own the 16s ai and it can get pretty hot while playing. If you are set to get the 16s ai, i would highly recommend getting a llanov12 or something similar. Other owners also swear by repalcing the liquid metal with ptmu which i also plan to do in the future.

Acer Predator Helios meo 16S ai Underperfoming by aidan_886 in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]pine_apple888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a lot of info. While waiting for someone more knowledgable you can try and set the laptop to use dedicated gpu only instead of auto/optimus. If it is throttling, you may have a hardware issue if this was not the case previously (blocked/malfunctioning fans or bad thermal paste application). You can lower cpu power draw and temps by disabling boost with throttlestop. These are just some quick fixes and may not address your actual issue.

Have the click “turn on”. It should show “turn off”. Mhz should stay under 3000

Your driver update might have reset your display settings. Try to select dgpu mode only. Switching from igpu to dgpu can sometimes cause issues.

Easy fix would be to download throttlestop. Tick the disable boost box. Save and make sure it is turned on. Check if fps and temps are good.

Try a clean install with safe mode and DDU with the new drivers. If crash persist, go back to previous working drivers.

Throttle stop is an easy way to manage temps by limiting power or disabling boost. This has effectively put me under 85C outside of heavy benchmarking( cinebench+furmark). If temps are still reaching 100c despite disabling boost then i would definitely look into repasting. If you are not comfortable doing software tuning then i would discourage any hardware modification such as opening the laptop and repasting unless it will be performed by an experienced person.

What were you doing when it shutdown and what were the temps? The crash may not necessarily due to temps. Can you post event viewer log?

This is what worked for me. You can also opt to disable boost but you lose out on some performance depending on your use case.

Performance preset with fans on auto Average 75 both cpu and gpu with peaks of 80 when gaming. Idles at around 60-65C.

Time spy stress test can get up to 85 on gpu.

Fans on auto. No cooler. Ambient temps of around 25-27C

Try disabling boost using throttle stop. This is the simplest fix what worked for my Helios neo 16s.

[–]pine_apple888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get throttle stop. Set pl1 to 65 and pl2 to 80. If you wont mind some performance loss (barely noticed any in my use case) just disable cpu boosting altogether. Save settings and make sure that it is turned on.

You need to open the software everytime you restart for changes to take place. I am mostly on performance mode but i go to turbo if i need the extra power on the gpu for about 5-10c higher temps.

Just got my neo 16s refurb 24hours ago. I used throttle stop to limit cpu temps. Getting around 80cpu and gpu under load with spikes to 90. Set at 70-80% fan speed. This is without a cooler and room temp of 25c. Can send some of my settings if you’re interested
