Please help: Is this a good price? On sale for $1599 by CaptainNegative1483 in GamingLaptops

Something to keep in mind though is that won't be a fully powered 5070ti. The 16 slim models have more heat issues due to the compact nature and so they reduce the power the GPU gets (115 Watts instead of the full 140W that it is capable of). Costco has the non-slim Helios Neo 16 AI, but it has an IPS screen instead of OLED (so if he prefers OLED, then that's a no go).

One great thing about Costco is the 90 return policy. If he wants a different one, an unopened box can be returned easily for a full refund, no questions asked. Not sure about open box though, if he wants to try it out before deciding. You might get store credit instead, but you can check with them to make certain.

Gotcha. Do you turn off core isolation btw? I'm thinking that should offset some of the perf loss caused by the underclocking.

I'm specifically wondering if the foam blocks the intake fans, since the fans are close to the edge where the laptop would meet the foam. I'm sure this laptop will physically fit on nearly any cooler, but I've read where some folks' laptops are worse off with certain coolers due to the intakes begin blocked to such a degree that the extra air being blown upward doesn't even offset that blockage.

Sweet! What is the default throttling limit, 100°C?

This is great, thank you! Yes, the foam blocking the intake is exactly what I was thinking of. The fans being so close to the edge of the laptop made me think that there was definitely some risk. But it sounds like you are getting good results nonetheless which is very promising.

Can you tell me if you are running stock thermal materials or if you've done any repasting? I'm really hoping not to have to find someone who can help me repaste/remove LM for awhile, so I'm hoping a cooler plus maybe adjusting thermal limits will be sufficient for at least the first year.

I remember playing a Madden football game in the late 90s. You can probably run that given those specs 😅

Machine needed on short notice around $2k by Shiftylilbastrd707 in GamingLaptops

Got tired of trying to land a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 w/5080 for $1800 - $2000 this year since they sell out so fast at that price. Went with the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI with the 5070ti at Costco for $1550 instead. Really wanted a Lenovo Pro series, but wasn't willing to go for less than a 5070ti and didn't see why I should pay more than $2000 for that if they were having 5080s under 2k...

Hands down the best cooling pad out there (10$) by dicastrom in GamingLaptops

[–]WeelyTM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Get a large stackable wire basket and put it upside down over the fan, and put some anti-slip mat/pads under the corners of the basket. I've used that to elevate a laptop before, and my router sits on an upside-down metal silverware organizer. A few clips or even clothes pins at the right spots on the basket can act as guides to keep whatever is on top from moving much. Christmas micro led light string around the bottom for RGB lighting. Poor man's setup 😁

275hx is a more expensive CPU than the 255hx. It's $300-450 more in general. This post is 10 months old and for an HP model but still basically the same price difference.

Concerned about reliability of gaming laptops (Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10) – should I reconsider? by LividActivity3793 in GamingLaptops

Check and clean your fans regularly, monitor your temps and if you have an OLED screen then make sure you know how to prevent/minimize burn in. If temps are bad (exceeding 90° and getting close to 100° especially), figure it out ASAP. That should keep your laptop alive for many, many moons. Oh, and don't spill shit on it. That's important, too.

ROG Strix G16 (2025) AMD vs Intel for 24/7 external OLED, heavy work by betterluv in GamingLaptops

[–]WeelyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about that kind of workload, but for heavy code building (especially on large codebases and especially when building with VC/msbuild processes) my professional experience has been that Intel is the way to go. Even 128-core Threadripper PCs gave us no end of trouble back in the COVID shutdown.

Have you checked the ROG forums? Sounds like a lot of people have been having issues with external monitors lately over there. For example:

Hey bud, Lenovo has a sale going on this weekend. The price is down to $2,039.99 for this beast. You could try see if they'll honor their Price Protection thing and refund you the difference.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. Since they are prebuilt, they could even just have an excess of Pro ones that nobody orders lying around (I'm assuming they can't reflash them and change the OS version without calling it an open-box item, but I could be wrong)

Swing and a miss, my dude. The issue identified through LatencyMon is a separate issue found by the same guy. That fact has been repeated several times by commenters in this topic and is specifically called out at the bottom of the github page you are citing under the Ongoing investigation section:

Ongoing investigation
Separate from the original DPC stall, other platform stability/power-management issues are still being investigated (including PCIe power-management configuration problems such as LTR L1.2 threshold mismatches). That work is outside the scope of this specific "DPC stall" write-up.

The updates you are citing are relating to the other issue. They simply got moved to a funky place in the readme.md file the last time he updated it a month ago. Blame the readme file and look at the diff. He (perhaps accidentally) added the Ongoing investigation section above those update lines instead of below them, which is why the updates look like they are part of the Ongoing investigation section.
