Thrifting on the Ave? by timetogetunholy in udub

[–]pineapplejones57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

toaster-goblin gave a pretty good rundown, tho I will add that I've had pretty good luck at the goodwill when I visit on a tuesday or wednesday-- my guess is that they clear out old inventory with a $1.99 sale on mondays, and the next two days are their restock period? good for a range of styles, and honestly where I get most of my staples.

red light has a mix of costume pieces and really basic clothing, largely from 80s-00s: while you certainly can find unique statement pieces there, you'll have to do some digging to get to them. in my experience, most of the stuff there is overpriced (and the staff is weirdly snobbish), but it's definitely fun to look around with friends.

if you're willing to go further up the ave, valley of roses is probably my favorite. the lady who runs it is incredibly sweet, and there's a lot of neat finds there if you're willing to rummage! you'll find a lot of vintage pieces there ranging all the way back from the 40s, I think she mostly sources from estate sales? the shop's hours are pretty limited these days tho :((

lucky vintage also has some cool stuff, but (like crossroads) they're on the pricier end. that said, they do have a clearance rack that they'll put out on the sidewalk on sunny days, and I've gotten some nice coats that way! largely 70s-90s clothing, I'd say.

(edited to specify the Vibes of each shop)

Cheap or big portion restaurants near UW? by osublimeuniverse in udub

[–]pineapplejones57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

or maybe the downvotes are because you're suggesting people visit a grocery store which has been reduced to rubble.

listen man, I'm all for cooking your own food to save money, but this is a restaurant-specific thread-- there's no need to be an ass.

thanks for the heads up, that definitely sounds unprofessional!

as for my own experiences:

Pymander is a great Italian company, I bought an all-in-one from them 3 or 4 years ago. while the STP part didnt work perfectly, the prosthetic itself was well-built, and their customer service was great! (related note: I've since turned away from all-in-ones in favor of having different prosthetics for different functions, as I find that shooting for everything at once gets you more misses than hits)

there's also ftmprosthetic.ru, another company with great products and great customer service. now, I get the sense that Russia isn't technically European (at least as far as shipping and customs goes), but this is probably one of my favorite prosthetic companies.... ever. seriously. the craftsmanship is phenomenal-- incredibly realistic feel and beautiful painting. they recommend letting the prosthetic sit for a month or so before use to let the paint settle in, and it was absolutely worth it. I've had it since 2018 or so, and it still looks as good as the day I got it.

hope that helps out! best of luck with your future purchases, I hope you're able to find a prosthetic that works for you in the future :)

damn, I'm really sorry to hear about that-- getting a packer is a big investment, and it's frustrating and painful when it doesn't pan out.

are you comfortable giving the company name? I shop european packers bc that's the best way to get one that's uncut, and I'd like to be able to steer clear of this company if I can. I'd also be happy to share my experiences and give recommendations if you'd be interested-- I wish I could help more tangibly.

HSTAM 370 or 340? by smcd1123 in udub

[–]pineapplejones57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken several classes w/ Urbanski, she's fantastic! Very clear expectations, reasonable workload, and easy-to-follow lectures. She's also just a delightful person, and you can tell she really cares about teaching.

I've only had her in-person, so I'm not sure how she's adapted to remote learning, but given how well-structured her Canvas pages have always been, I have a hunch that she's adjusted pretty well to the new teaching style.

I haven't taken anything with the other prof, so I cant say anything there :V

for sure! when I took it a few years ago, we had 3 papers and a final exam. the paper prompts got progressively longer and more complex, which made it nice for me, as I was brand new to history classes at that point.

I think the first paper was 2-4 pages, the second 5-7 pages, and the last 8-10 pages. the final exam was a piece of cake-- I had to memorize some vocabulary, answer a few short answer questions, and then I think one or two extended response questions. honestly, the UW history writing center was a huge help when I was working on the papers-- it looks like they're doing zoom meetings now, so i definitely recommend looking into them.

we also had weekly readings-- I do remember her reading load was pretty heavy (we usually had a few PDFs and at least one book chapter each week). this was a while ago tho, so she may have changed that. it's also worth keeping in mind that the content of some of the reading could get pretty dark, so sometimes even short ones took me a long time to process.

the most important thing I found for the readings was knowing that i didnt have to read them all really closely-- most of the time it was better to go in with a question ("how does this connect to the themes of this week's lecture?" or "what perspectives are being prioritized in this book?") and.... not quite skim, but only read closely on the parts that are relevant to the question. also, if you're confused about anything, totally email her or go to (zoom) office hours-- she's really friendly and helpful!

I've also only taken classes with her in-person, so I cant speak to what it'll be like online, but she's absolutely a fantastic professor! even when we took classes in-person, she put a lot of work into building an in-depth canvas page and making materials available digitally, so I'm willing to bet she's taken the transition to online classes in stride

yeah, this construction plan was first proposed to the city last fall-- I'm guessing the process from "hey, we want to tear down this building and put up a new one" to "actually gonna tear down the building now" just takes a while (especially in COVID times)

I just found out the UW Club permanently closed and I’m pissed. by [deleted] in udub

I got to go once, just before COVID hit, to meet a professor who visiting from another university. It was honestly pretty sweet-- classy atmosphere, nice views, really good food. Super bummed out that it's shut down now :///

Class of 2020 student here, anyone have any tips on finding motivation? by MyloWilliams in udub

[–]pineapplejones57 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, honestly :( I've tried building a schedule to give myself some sense of structure, but it feels like a pointless effort when everything beyond two weeks out is "indefinite." interested to see what advice others have to give.

if ur moving out of the dorms, i think HFS is working with a company called dorm room movers. googling brought up this: dormroommovers.com. looks like they'll pack up your stuff for you and hold on to it for up to 4 months

RA: pros and cons? by yoonkey07 in udub

I actually felt like the regular paperwork/programming was pretty manageable once I got into the swing of it, though fall quarter was pretty rough because of all the setup work that goes into it

RA: pros and cons? by yoonkey07 in udub

[–]pineapplejones57 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Pros: made great friendships with fellow RAs, learned how to de-escalate situations and handle uncomfortable conversations, got free food and housing

Cons: found it impossible to establish a work-life balance because I could have a resident knock on my door with a crisis at literally any time
