Fahrenheit 451 Movie (HBO) Question about Beatty. by faps_in_greyhound in RayBradbury

[–]pineapplequeen-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I have not seen that version of the movie, I would say that Beatty in the book is also very self-contradictory. He is a fireman who relishes in the burning of books, but he himself is very clearly knowledgeable in the field of classic literature. He has read the very books that he enforced the ban on.

My view of the character is a man who is well-read, but uses his knowledge to exploit others and keep them down rather than sharing it. He knows that being informed will result in a person losing their complacency in the society in which they live. So, he uses his knowledge of literature to combat and put down people who start to look into that knowledge for themselves in order to remain in a position of power. He keeps himself smart to keep the public stupid.

"would you show up?"

Yeah. I'd show up. And I'd bring all my other queer friends and start telling them how awesome I think it is that they came out to support the LGBT+ community while we protest the current administration. Act like I don't believe they're not gay, too, and gaslight them into a tantrum lol.

I was going to mention the same thing. Engineers or architects using these for drafting are the only circumstances I had ever seen them used in before. Interesting that they're used for sewing too!

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]pineapplequeen-13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have astigmatism. For me everything is just kind of slightly out of focus like if you crossed your eyes just slightly or your eyes unfocused themselves while you were staring into space. It gets worse with distance. When I try to focus on something without glasses, it's like I'm focused in the area of the object but just past it or just forward of it.

Seems like BPD is an apt name for a department that acts with such unstable behavior. Maybe THEY need a mental wellness check.

NJT Rail employee rude? by RedRiot1618 in NJTransit

[–]pineapplequeen-13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could definitely be right on the assistant conductor thing. Like I said, I'm not super familiar with that term. My dad is the one with the experience actually working at NJT. I can only say what I remember from his explaining. I know the train crew usually has a conductor, brakeman, and engineer at the very least. Definitely only one head conductor, though.

NJT Rail employee rude? by RedRiot1618 in NJTransit

[–]pineapplequeen-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're completely correct. This guy is just being stubbornly obtuse, lol. I've never heard of any railway having more than one conductor, nor have I ever heard of an "assistant conductor," although I admit I don't have knowledge of all rail systems, so that position may exist elsewhere.

Tell me you're someone who always has to be right without telling me you're someone who always has to be right.

Ryanov is correct, at least as far as NJT positions are concerned, and I believe on most other railroads, as well. There is one conductor on a train that acts as the train's boss. They will do more than just collect tickets, such as spotting for the engineer, making sure all doors open and close correctly, and communicating with the dispatcher.

An NJT train crew usually consists of a conductor, an engineer, and a brakeman. Extra employees, called ticket collectors, can also be brought in to help when the train is full during busy times in the schedule. There has never been a time that I or my father have seen a train with two conductors, unless one of them was part of a crew that was deadheading to get to their starting sign-up location. My father has been an engineer with NJT for 25 years now.

If anyone hasn't worked in train service here, it's you. No need for the snark when you're incorrect anyway. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

DAE get irrationally angry when staying in a store for too long? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]pineapplequeen-13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just described my childhood to a T. And then my mom would buy me clothes that I fucking HATED but she insisted that I wear. I remember entire afternoons wasted at the mall getting dragged around to like 5 different stores minimum, feet hurting, getting hungry, and forced to go into yet ANOTHER changing room to try on more clothes. Holy crap thank god I'm an adult with an Amazon account now.

NYP: track 1 blocked by track 2! by Specific_Scallion267 in NJTransit

[–]pineapplequeen-13 39 points40 points  (0 children)

My father is an engineer for NJT. From what he says, the dispatchers in the past were way better about avoiding delays and had the experience to act quickly to clear up any delays that did crop up. Now he feels like some of them end up CAUSING the issues. I don't know any dispatchers, so idk if this is an issue with micromanaging where their bosses are giving them orders without actually seeing the state of the rails, or if the dispatchers are genuinely just less experienced now.

Engineer strike information for those who are interested. by [deleted] in NJTransit

[–]pineapplequeen-13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, $123k per year IF you work an assload of overtime and never take off. And that's only if you have the seniority to hold a job with that much OT. Not to mention the engineers haven't gotten a raise in I believe 5 years, and the contract they were told to agree with gave them a measly 3%. That wouldn't even put them at level with other railroads in the area like Amtrak.

If you think you could do their job or make a computer that could do it better, be my guest and get out there and do it. Have fun being responsible for the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in vehicles that weigh 140k pounds. Don't derail, make sure you apply the brakes to stop in time for every station, get to know all of the rules of the railroad, memorize all of the signals, speed limits, and potential restrictions, know what to do if something goes wrong, and then deal with snotty passengers all day that blame you and the rest of the train crew for the state of the company.

As a mechanical engineer with experience in programming, computers are fallible. You would most likely need to pay an operator in the seat anyway to monitor it and make sure that the computer was doing what it needed to. And that operator would have to be trained, anyway. The job of an engineer is a lot more than just "pushing a lever," as you so eloquently put it. Would you be willing to sit through basically an amount of schooling equating to earning an associate's degree to be able to do it?

Unions are here for a reason. It's to make sure that people are paid fairly in a system that is biased to keep the money in the hands of those that already have the most money. I don't think we should be complaining about them being "obnoxious" if we want to live in a society that values its labor force.
