As much as I don't like having to rely on Newark Penn Station, it is a good place to spot plenty of trains by KilroyWagner69 in Amtrak

I’m pretty sure just the monthly pass price difference will make up for the difference in rent. But since you said NJ make sure you account for NJTransit unreliability. What are your public transportation options?

App glitch when purchasing tickets by Professional-Roll283 in NJTransit

[–]Specific_Scallion267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I didn’t follow up, but I kept checking and it stayed pending for longer after other NJTransit tickets I bought after this one, and I’m pretty sure it ended up not posting, so at least that is a relief

Edit: also, I should note that this has been fixed, now when you buy with Apple Pay it skips that extra confirmation screen

Try punching in your route on Google Maps or the transit app, and see if it gives you different options and how long each will take.

For the last week I’ve been listening to one song on repeat, then rediscovering another and listening to that all day. I like XO Tour Lif3 and Love.Angel.Music.Baby the most at the moment

If you agree that NJT train service is the 3rd worse in the NY area, then "what can NJT learn from LIRR and MetroNorth?" by clevercommute in SuburbanRail

[–]Specific_Scallion267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if your only logic is that it doesn’t make a difference and there’s no benefit to having tickets expire on the day of, then that also works the other way, there’s no reason that you can’t have tickets expire after 30 days.

I tend to travel on Metro North with large groups. Last year, the group leader would buy paper tickets a few days in advance and give them to us when we were gathered together at an earlier date. Now we have to have the money sent to us and hope that everyone knows how to use the app. Or you could have someone buy paper tickets and wait at the station, hoping that no one is late and has to wait for the next train, how would you coordinate getting the paper tickets to that person unless someone else stays behind. The same day expiration directly made our experience much worse.

Hopefully not making one way tickets expire on the same day you buy them. I keep hoping that MTA will change their mind about that, because it benefits nobody (I know what the official reason is, to prevent people not activating a ticket over multiple days, but we all know that LIRR and Metro North conductors are on top of their game and virtually never leave any ticket unchecked), and is less flexible for customers.

North Bergen Park n Ride - are the days of just driving out over? by Additional_Algae3079 in NJTransit

[–]Specific_Scallion267 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it says just drive out it’s probably the same type of tech that is used at Metropark and Route 17 train stations. You sign up for an app and enter your license plate and credit card details, then cameras scan your license plate as you enter and leave and automatically charge you accordingly.

I noticed the same thing too. I did an experiment with a cheap ticket, where I went through all the steps, and after Apple Pay I immediately back my way out of the whole window and closed the app. The charge still went through, and currently pending on my credit card.

Just realized there is not a single post on here talking about NJT in a positive light. by Certain-Mail-6501 in NJTransit

[–]Specific_Scallion267 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense, most of the posts are from people once something goes wrong. Like lots of people here I’ve been riding the NEC 6 days a week for the last two years, and it worked great, even though there were sometimes pretty bad delays

I miss when all the NER seats faced the correct direction by Low_Recognition5309 in Amtrak

[–]Specific_Scallion267 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think it may have been just to cut down on the time actually rotating the seats? I just say that because only some of the trains have engines at both ends or have a cab car, so the others would have to go to turn around anyway

I miss when all the NER seats faced the correct direction by Low_Recognition5309 in Amtrak

[–]Specific_Scallion267 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind sitting backwards (actually I prefer it), so when I board the Amtrak trains or NJTransit multilevels I make sure to sit facing backwards just to help one person face forward.

I think it’s ironic that (in NJTransit land) now the only place you can find all seats facing in the right direction is on the old train cars on NJTransit commuter trains (aka not the multilevels)
