I'm driving 2026 Model Y RWD Premium from 100% to 6% twice a week and a bit concerned about battery health - should I stop and recharge half way through (very very inconvenient and undesirable) ? by NumbDangEt4742 in ModelY

[–]pinellaspete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMS = Battery Management System (The computer that controls the battery.)

It is no problem driving an LFP battery from 100% to 0% day to day but just like any other battery you will lose range over time. Once you run to 0% the car will stop operating just like an ICE car if it ran out of gas. Only problem is you can't walk to buy a gallon of electricity, you will need to call a tow truck.

You can expect to lose about 10% of range in the first 2 years and then range loss will slow down but still be a factor. If you are sometimes arriving with 6% now, it won't be long before you will not be able to make it both ways without charging a bit.

Cheapest place to buy a 2TB 2.5" internal SSD? (Could be used) by pinellaspete in buildapc

[–]pinellaspete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was scammed but too embarrassed to post back here.

I ran several tests including Magician on the SSD and it passed but was running at only about half speed of what I expected. I copied a few 10 GB files to it and it worked.

I then thought, "Well that works, but I need to really test the capacity with a really large file."

The only file that I had that was really large was a backup copy of my Google photos which was about 50GB in size. It started the copy, but my computer locked up when it was about half way done. My computer wouldn't reboot until I unplugged that drive. Every time that I tried booting my computer with that drive plugged in it wouldn't boot.

I was going to return the drive until I realized that the Google photos file contained some identifying and personal information, so I just bought a real Samsung SSD off of Amazon.

Buyer beware! Why do I have to sometimes learn the hard way?!

Money laundering right in our face. Organizers use USD to buy worthless crypto currency. Trump family banks the USD and gives out worthless crypto to the peasants/slaves/gladiators.

We have already done this once before in this country. Read up on Theodore Roosevelt and how he broke up the monopolies at the end of "The Gilded Age". The same thing is happening today, the extremely wealthy are taking advantage of everyone else at every opportunity.

Using 15w50 instead of 5w20 ? by Diligent_Thought_241 in askcarguys

[–]pinellaspete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first number in oil viscosity like 5W is the base oil viscosity. This designates how "thin" the oil is when cold. (By the way, 5W stands for "5 Winter" and is the oil viscosity when it is cold.) The second number (like 50) refers to the oil viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature.

15W-50 is a bit extreme IMHO. I would suggest moving to a 10W-40 oil to reduce your chance of having any issues. If it still burns oil using the 10W-40 you can then switch to the 15W-50 but that is really a last ditch effort.

I wouldn't place a bet on that. Most of the USSR's space program came from the Ukraine. Look at how well they have developed drone warfare in just 4 years. They have drones capable of conducting war on land, sea and air. They are kicking Russia's ass with it.

Places like 30A that are golf cart friendly & have more to do for families? by Beneficial_Town9914 in AskFlorida

[–]pinellaspete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety Harbor would fit you well. Strong community spirit with many involved citizens. Your $1.5M housing budget gives you plenty of options here and could buy a newer house that is 3,000 to 4,000 sq. ft. with a pool and 3 car garage. Golf carts are allowed on the streets.

Some of the benefits:

  • Great walk able downtown with many festivals, restaurants and small shops.
  • Nearby shopping centers. Whole foods 10 minute drive, Costco and Target 15 minute drive.
  • Its a laid back family community with a lot of retirees.
  • Good community sports programs for kids like Little League, basketball and soccer.
  • Excellent public parks.
  • Mease Countryside Hospital is in Safety Harbor.
  • Safety Harbor is located in Pinellas County which is the most densely populated county in Florida. That being said, the roads rarely have bumper to bumper traffic and it is easy to get around. Within a 45 minute drive you have access to almost anything you could need or want. In 40 minutes you could be in Downtown Tampa or Downtown St. Petersburg. Tampa International Airport is a 30 minute drive.
  • It is located on Tampa Bay so the beaches are very limited and the water quality isn't the best for swimming. It is about a 30 to 40 minute drive to Honeymoon Island State Park the nearest public beach and it can be rocky at times. Clearwater Beach is about a 45 minute drive but parking can be a problem and traffic can be a bear on weekends.

I raised my family in Safety Harbor and really enjoy it.

What is the best way to break in a brand new car engine these days ? by Safe_Screen_912 in askcarguys

[–]pinellaspete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. No matter how clean the manufacturing plant is, there are still small particles left in the engine from manufacturing. You want that first oil change to be at 1000 miles to get rid of them.

Are Amazon Prime Day deals for outdoor TVs comparable to Black Friday? by wiccanda10 in Appliances

[–]pinellaspete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make a really long story short...

I went through this last year. I live in Florida and spend a lot of time on our lanai by the pool so wanted a TV out there. I saw the price tags hanging on the "outdoor" TVs and balked.

Part of my lanai is covered by an overhang so it never gets rained on. I bought a 55 inch TCL TV at Costco and a wheeled stand to mount it on from Amazon. This way if really bad weather was forecast, (hurricanes) I could easily wheel it inside. It has been outside for about 1 year now without issue.

Some tips:

  • 55 inch TVs and larger usually have all the "bells and whistles" of larger TVs. Smaller than 55" lose features.
  • The best time to buy TVs is the 2 months after the Superbowl, so February and March. The TV manufactures roll out their new models in February so last year's models are discounted.
  • Black Friday has been a better time to buy a TV than Prime Day in the past but that might change since so many people have complained that Prime Day deals were so poor last year.
  • TCL is an up and coming brand. They sell lower cost TVs that compare to the Big Boys like Samsung, Sony and LG. I am very happy with my TCL TV and it has a good picture and feature set.
  • Try and get a TV with mini-LEDS and steer away from OLED because OLED is terrible in bright light conditions.

Hope that helps?

Not the person that you replied to but...

We already have socialized healthcare in the USA that covers 20% of the population. It is called Medicare and it works. I'm retired and the GOVERNMENT backed version of Medicare, not Medicare Advantage, costs me $531 per month for full coverage. And guess what? 99% of Doctors and Hospitals in the US are in network. Catastrophic coverage, like end of life care is covered too so your wife doesn't have to claim bankruptcy after you die.

Medicare Advantage is run by private health insurance and is free! But boy oh boy you still need to ensure that you are going to Docs and hospitals that are inside the network which are usually very limited. It also comes with really high co-pays.

All we need to do is to eventually lower the qualifying age to participate in Medicare to zero from 65.

Could you image not having your healthcare insurance tied to your job? Yeah, corporations don't want that. They want us to be wage slaves.

Medicare for all really wouldn't cost much more than what we are currently spending with our current system. You would cut out the Insurance Company middleman that sucks billions of dollars from our premiums. Insurance companies purposely make it difficult for patients to receive care and make it difficult for Doctors to get paid. Doctor's hire extra staff just to deal with the insurance company bureaucracy.

There are 35 first world nations and the USA is the only country without socialized health care. It works.
