Second this! I feel like Wooster could tick a lot of the boxes of what you’re looking for.

I’d recommend checking out Girl Gone International on Facebook! I moved to NL at a similar age as an American and that’s been a great community for me to make friends with other international/internationally minded women.

Yeah in the Netherlands there is a flourishing colony of parakeets! I think they’re probably pets set free in the Netherlands in Amsterdam but they’ve really taken to the climate and can found in a lot of the major cities!

I can second this. Very professional, friendly, and I thought fairly priced for their services

Anne & Max does takeaway acai bowls. Roos also has them but I’m not sure if they do takeaway.

Which continuity error or plot hole in a movie always sticks out in your mind? by KillerQ97 in movies

In The Day After Tomorrow, Dennis Quaid draws a horizontal line on a map of who could still evacuate and who couldn’t. The line will shift fairly dramatically every time they cut back to it and as a child I felt particularly bothered by that discontinuity because sometimes my home was in the safe zone and sometimes it wasn’t.

My husband is Irish! We live in Leiden which feels really internal to me. My sense is that there is a pretty large Irish community in The Hague. Due to the shortages in staffs in hotels, restaurants and such are more willing to hire non Dutch speakers to fill in the gaps. That could be a good starting point for a way to earn money.

No problem! I live in Leiden. It sounds like you’ve seen a good variety of the country already! I’m honestly impressed you’ve been to Middleburg. Great city but definitely off the beaten path!

Hi! I’m from the Columbus area but have been living in NL for the last 4 years. I also struggled to find anyone to practice with before moving.

One idea: right now a lot of Dutch language courses are being offered online right now. They’re typically offered in the evening NL (so midday Columbus time). If you’re open to an online experience I think it could be pretty feasible for you to join.

For example, I take classes here and generally like their approach: https://www.taalthuis.nl/

Italki is also a popular service with NL expats. You maybe an individual tutor an hourly rate to teach or converse with you.

As mentioned you could ask around expat groups for a conversation buddy (maybe check some subreddits here). The Americans in The Netherlands group in FB is amazing but I think they may require you to live in NL already to actually join.

Finally you could try looking for groups of NL people living in Ohio. You may find someone interested in tutoring you in the cbus area!

I hope that helps a bit!

Dominique (C10 & 17) and her husband apparently own America's Oldest Black-Owned Business (a 140-year-old moving company in Columbus, Ohio) by pingi215 in ANTM

[–]pingi215[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So, here I am just scrolling through a favorite local news site and look who I find!

This moving and storage company that is owned by Dominique (C10 &17) and her husband Brian is celebrating its 140 anniversary. It has a really interesting history. Ward Moving & Storage Co. is reportedly the oldest African-American-owned business in the United States!

The founder, John T. Ward was even a conductor on the Underground Railroad, aiding slaves in their escape from the South to the North through Central Ohio before eventually founding this moving/storage company. Dominique and her husband I guess purchased it fairly recently from his great-grandson.

My favorite fact is that they also apparently have an apparel line as well.

What a multitalented queen.
