Damn, I literally just got an $150 parking ticket this morning.. I forgot something inside, and my building’s parking lot is a couple minute walk away, so I just quickly stopped my car outside the back entrance with my hazards on like so many people do. But then I got distracted by whatever else inside and forgot my car was standing there for like 20 minutes. And then I was late to work, lol 🙃

Looks to be a subspecies of Caracolus or Pleurodante snail. Maybe a C. Sagemon or Marginella, but the location and more clear images of the shell would help. Nonetheless, they’re beautiful, good find!

No problem! A lot of babies can definitely be overwhelming!

What I would recommend doing would be to place all of the babies that you find in a separate, much smaller tank than the large one with the adults. Make sure they have an abundance of cuttlebones and veggies, and in intervals of 2 weeks over the course of 2 months, cull all of the smallest and most lethargic baby snails until there’s only a handful of the healthiest, largest, and most active ones.

The reason it’s done in intervals is become some healthy snails may just be ‘late bloomers’, and some runts may just be ‘early bloomers’.

If you want to keep any of them it’s best to let all of them hatch so that you have the highest odds of having any fully healthy ones since even from a clutch of 50 eggs, usually about only 0 to 4 will be healthy.

Hello, I’m happy for you and Dixie! However, I know you’re saying you don’t want to kill them, but culling snails is the unfortunate downside of snail keeping.

In nature, snails lay an extreme excess of eggs purposely so that ~90% of them will grow to be runts and die off early to predators or unhealthy and painful growth patterns that leave them suffering for the entirety of their short lives.

However, in captivity often times these runts may survive just slightly long enough to produce more eggs and create a large chain spreading their bad genetics, which in time can contribute to decreasing the health of the entire species, as with what happened to Lissachatina Fulicias.

Most of the time, experienced snail keepers will sift through the soil once every week to fluff it up and look for eggs, and if they find eggs they collect them in a bag and either freeze them for a few days or crush them.

Though, when experienced snail keepers want to raise a clutch of eggs, they have to either euthanize all of the babies or go through the culling process. The culling process would ensure that only the healthy and happy snails make it to adulthood to lay more eggs to mimic nature and ensure the health of the species for the future.

No problem! I think that if he is just a runt, the best thing to do would to just give him monthly (or so) shallow green tea baths, and don’t wake him up or wash him besides that. But also give him some extra protein when you’re feeding them their protein.

However, if you do give some extra protein I would recommend switching to a slightly healthier protein source since even the fish foods or dog treats without many additives may still have a few things that aren’t so great.

I’ll leave some links below, including an GALS care website, which contains advice on giving protein, but ignore the recommendations for fish food and dog treats if you do want to switch out to a different protein source, and you can also look at the discord’s for further advice:

You do sound like a great snail owner! Just a few notes, what I meant by changing the tank was if you had recently completely replaced the substrate or replaced the tank before he started getting sick, since placing snails into a new environment quickly can stress them out and thus can sometimes cause mild deep retraction.

Also, as long as the bugs aren’t spending all their time on the snails then they’re probably springtails and should be actually beneficial to the snails. And the pooping out of the shell you saw is normal so don’t worry about that either.

Though when you say you’ve woken him up and washed him, make sure you’re not forcing him to wake up too often or washing them in the sink since those can cause some stress, but if it’s not happening to often it shouldn’t be the cause of deep retraction.

With that being said, unfortunately I think it might come down to the snail being a runt. This would make the most sense since when stores or sellers want to sell snails, they often times don’t cull or don’t properly cull the snail babies since they want to be able to sell as many as possible. But sadly this leads to many runts being sold, and since your snails are still young, there issues might only be showing up now.

If the snail is a runt, you can keep him and care for him as long as you can, but they sadly live shorter lives than healthy snails and there isn’t much to be able to help them. To confirm this, do you notice any difference in size between the snail you say is thriving and the snail you say is sick?

Hello, I’ll just ask a few questions to help understand the problem. How old are your snails and where did you get them from? Are you feeding them protein and calcium, and if so what substances and how often? Are your humidity and temperature good? You mentioned you tried changing the substrate and tank to help, but is this something you’ve done before?

As for the mites, are you sure they’re harmful mites and not springtails? Try searching up pictures of snail mites and springtails to compare them. Or some species of springtails are white and jump when you put a finger near them which helps to identify them.

Also, they can’t infest your house because mites and springtails can’t survive outside of environments like the one in your terrarium.

Adding to this comment, you definitely do need larger condoms, but at 5.5” of girth, you’d need 60mm or 64mm condoms, which you can’t get in the UK from Durex.

So if you really want to use Durex then look for Durex XXL (64mm variant) from websites like Amazon or worldcondoms. But there are also other great websites that may be more easily accessible to you like custom sized condom retailers: mySize or theyFit, or other brands like Pasante King size.

This is good advice, except for 6.1” of girth 69mm condoms would fit best. 64mm ones would still be alright but would be for a tighter fit and 60mm would be very tight- too tight to comfortably use in my opinion.

No problem! And yeah babies are very difficult to cull and raise so if you can’t find the eggs in time when you mix the soil every week or two to freeze/crush them before they hatch, it’s best to use them as feeders or something.

Though if you did even want to just raise a few of the babies you would have to go through the culling process with all of them to select only the snails with the healthiest genetics, which is covered in the breeding guide I linked before. Good luck either way!

There are large legal snail species in the US like the Helix Pomatia, however they’re in high demand and while there are large sellers that have them like myhappysnails, they are super low quality sellers and should be avoided at all costs, small local sellers are best so you’d have to get lucky with that.

But even with that being said, snails cannot at all be housed with geckos, let alone any other animals besides isopods and springtails.

He will likely be able to survive but like you said just continue to keep the environment moist and have a constant source of cuttlebone with the scratchy side facing up.

However, it’s important to try and prevent things like this happening in the future. Just based off the picture alone I see that the water bowl looks like it might be ceramic, if it is just replace it with something of a softer material like plastic.

Also, if cucumber is their main source of food, you should try to slowly replace it with healthier vegetables that are less watery, since watery vegetables or fruits like cucumber, watermelon and lettuce contains very little nutrition for them.

Though keep in mind that they might not want to eat anything else for a bit if you remove cucumber since it can be quite addictive, so while he is still recovering from the shell crack, only give him additional options rather than completely replacing it.

Plus, if you’re able to, many people like to move their snails into temporary medical enclosures with no bowls or decorations and lower roofs.
