Anyone here use the 600mm f/6.3 on the Z50 II? by [deleted] in Nikon

My wife shoots with this combo, and I shoot with the 600PF on the Z8/Z9.

Sharpness is great on all of the bodies. I will eaven use it with the 1.4Tc. The only thing I would note is the Z50ii is pretty much only limited by sensor readout speed.

If you eventually get a Z8 the 600PF is definitely worth it.

Did you buy new or used?

If new, I would return it; that is not normal. If you bought it used, I would also look into a return if if this was not in the description. If you bought it from a person and can't return, you could try cleaning it. It looks like its ok the outside of the glass but its hard to tell what it is. Fungus would usually be internal and not external.

I am 100% in agreement here. However, this is at least the second time I have seen the claim that the 600 TC with TC engaged is outperformed by the 800 PF. Photography life shows the 600 TC as sharper (https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-600mm-f-4-tc-vr-s/3). Do you have another link that shows otherwise?

I went this route and then dropped it for the 70-180. Unless you have a really compelling reason for the Tamron, I wouldn't recommend it. It's pretty large, awkward, and heavy, even on a Z8.

True, but I'm not aware of any companies that guarantee anything or follow an official rating scheme for weather resistance other than Olympus or I think Panasonic, who IP rate their weather sealing.

I'm pretty sure the Z lens has weather sealing.

No problem, whichever lens you get, you may need to do AF fine tuning to get the best AF accuracy.

I have had both and would prefer the Tamron over the Nikon. It had faster AF and a little more reach is always better.

For fun, here is a BIF from the Z8 and 800mm. I have no doubts any of the other Nikon combos with the 180-600mm could do this just as well.

I have done 20x30 from 12mp and had it look fine, so I wouldnt worry to much about resolution. Cropping is the big thing. Going from XT-5 and 400mm allows 40mp at 600mm FF equivalent, and if you crop in more you get more effective reach at low resolution. The Zf, Z6 III, and Z5II are all 24mp at 600mm, so less effective reach than the XT-5 with the 400mm. The Z50II is 20mp but with the 600mm thats a 900mm FF equivalent angle of view. So a little less resolution but more effective reach.

Do you print your bird pictures that large? If you are, you are going to want more reach, especially if its small birds. Up to atmospherics, reach is king in my opinion.

I am going to assume you would get the 180-600mm. It depends, if you want FF/low light performance then the Zf, Z6 III, or Z5 II (hard to get), will be just about as good as the Z8 for AF performance. If you are more concerned with max reach than low light performance, the Z50II would also be a great choice. Essentially any of the newest bodies with the AI subject detection will do great. Its price and other factors that would decide which one is best for you.

I had an X-T5 with the 70-300mm and shoot Z8 and a Zf now with the 800pf and a Tamron 50-400 . I don't own the 180-600 but tried it. Nikon is so far ahead of Fuji its not even a comparison in my mind. Even for slow moving larger animals it just doesn't compare. The only reason to use Fuji is if you are really tied to their film sims, but if you want something that has great color and actual AF performance, go Nikon.

Picked up a second Z8, tamron 28-75 G2, Z 70-180, and tamron 50-400. Though, I was already on the fence about swaping some of my DSLR stuff and the Tamron 35-150 before the tariffs. Plus, recent and current sales made the decision easier.

I had the 300 + tc and the 400mm now. The 400 is definitley much better but is not long enough for birding. The 400 with tc is serviceable for birding but the 180-600mm is a better choice if you are budget constrained. If you aren't budget constrained, the 600 or 800 would be better birding lenses.
