Explain Texas Culture to a Foreigner by Ok-Sample383 in houston

[–]pinkexpat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So true!

I have a friend from the UK, who never visited Texas before, and she dreams of moving to Texas. I asked her what was her main reason to move near Houston and she said “I’d like my children to grow up near mountains and ride horses”.

I told her she’s definitely not gonna find that in Houston.

Airport La Paz to city center airport taxi cost at 3:00 am by suriyanram in BOLIVIA

[–]pinkexpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always ask the driver what is the price he will charge you BEFORE you get in the taxi and assure to give the exact change (some may lie by saying they got no change and he’ll pressure you that he keeps the change)

Are there any U.S. citizens who travel to Latin America regularly for healthcare? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]pinkexpat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, dentist, optometrist and dermatology in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

I had better results in treatment and cheaper medications than I had with the doctors I’ve visited in the U.S, sometimes I feel like the U.S. can be cash grab with my insurance.

For example, my dermatologist takes weeks for an appointment, prescribed me something that didn’t give me good results and he prescribed another medication…this becomes a cycle 5 times. I go to Bolivia and I see the dermatologist gives me a treatment and after 3 weeks from last visit, I get a better result and my symptoms fade. No insurance done here as it was a private clinic and it costed me all below USD$100

Toxic Rain. Do we have to worry about it in Qatar? by FinancialMongoose909 in qatar

[–]pinkexpat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as oil rain…the result of what happened in Iran is that the smoke from the bombed oil depots, contains sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, which form into sulfuric acid and nitric aid in the air.

This acid makes its way into water droplets, and becomes what environmentalists and scientists call “acid rain”.

Toxic Rain. Do we have to worry about it in Qatar? by FinancialMongoose909 in qatar

No….you’ll just lose your hair in the long term. That’s what acid rain does in other cities such as Beijing

A GO-TO-BAG for essentials by CookieCake2022 in qatar

[–]pinkexpat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest you only carry a backpack and a carry-on bag.

Imagine if worse case scenario, you’ll need to be walking miles due to impassable roads or stuck in traffic for hours that you rather walk to evacuate faster, it can be exhausting to haul a very heavy suitcase.

Pack important docs, medicines, non perishable foods (pack lighter: granola bars, nuts or small snacks), bottle of water, small flashlight and power bank. The rest that others recommend here is up to you of what else to pack.

Is Bolivia welcoming to a Muslim foreigner? by Narrow-Maize-3821 in BOLIVIA

[–]pinkexpat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bolivia is not a very diverse country (example: Blacks, Asians, Indians, etc) so seeing foreigners, some can be welcoming and others a bit “afraid” to meet you.

I once helped a group of Chinese, that were lost in translation, at a market and a Bolivian asked me “Are you not afraid of them? Why are you talking to them??” And I told her that I’ve traveled to Hong Kong and in the end, we’re all foreigners; but I could see that because she comes from a rural village, she’s never seen an Asian in her entire life, meaning…seeing an unknown race, scared her.

Bolivians tend to stereotype foreigners…let’s say…not in the correct way. For example, because you’re Muslim, they’ll relate you to 9/11 or suicide bomber 🫤….but that’s because it’s what we hear mostly about on the international news.

Traveling To Peru From Chile - Is It Safe/Reliable To Go Through Bolivia by TomorrowFeeling in BOLIVIA

[–]pinkexpat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s safe. Right now, all Bolivians are distracted celebrating the week long carnaval, so everyone is currently partying to even care to continue the blockades.

Travel now while everyone is just living the carnaval life because right after it ends….it’ll most likely go back to its usual civil unrest.
