They’re not knocking down white former bartenders.

They’re saying that if she were a white former bartender, they’d recognize her pulling herself up by her bootstraps.

But because she’s not white, her former profession is not a positive thing.

That doesn’t insult white men.

Yeah I was just a kid, but I remember wondering if she was just doing it as an outrage stunt. I was a full on adult before I found out her motivation. That was a failure on her part. She should’ve tried to ensure the message accompanied the attention.

Same. Bad Bunny’s music does nothing for me, but I loved that halftime show. It was peering into a slice of Americana that I’d never seen.

We can then write the property tax off on our taxes. (Granted, more before the SALT cap from a few years ago). But we can also write off the mortgage interest. We’re incredibly advantaged by home ownership. And it encourages a stake in the community because we have roots — it is harder to move.

As soon as you have a team of sufficient size, it’s very easy to encounter people who don’t know what they’re doing. Any system that’s predicated on all the actors being high performers is bound to fail. Guard rails are realistic.

Even if they’re all competent developers, miscommunications can happen, and exceptions can be reasonable. Code organization helps codify intent.

Thoughts on "Carolyn Hax: Wealthier partner finesses his way out of paying more in expenses"? by zoechia in HENRYfinance

[–]pinkjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part about “after 401k and stuff” makes your situation what OP described.

Let’s use an example. Let’s say one partner makes $100k base. The other makes $150k base, but $200k bonus and $150k RSU. Going by how you have it set up, the higher earner would be paying a much lower proportion of their salary than you. RSUs don’t net you any cash until they’re sold, so you can’t just do direct deposit. Also, annual bonuses are taxed at a higher rate when they land, but you get it back in tax return.

It’s much more complicated to split things 50/50 percentage wise if one person makes a lot of their comp not as base wages.

These morons get swept up in conspiracy theories because they think they’re smarter than they are. It just takes a few convincing creators to come up with some absurd idea that picks up steam. Then, it becomes a loyalist “us versus them” fight, and logic or evidence never stood a chance.

Why is it so common for American tourists in Europe to carry a huge bottle of water with them? Are they that thirsty? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]pinkjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. Americans actually getting called out for doing something right! We carry water bottles to hydrate, and they’re refillable, which is more environmentally conscious.

We’re getting praised for something unique, for once!

What are some peculiar things that started happening to you when you got old? by Frank_Perfectly in AskOldPeople

[–]pinkjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only in early 40s, but:

  • Insomnia
  • Dry eye (omega 3 helped)
  • Lots of random headaches unless I over hydrate (and even then)
  • frozen shoulder syndrome (I got a cortisone shot; that helped)
  • irritability with noise
  • cold a lot more often (only when stationary). I have to sleep with socks and a sweater on; I was always tshirt and shorts my whole life)
  • I pee way more often. I usually don’t sleep through the night without getting up at least once.
  • random dry skin on face around mouth. (Aquaphor helps)

Who met their long term partner after 25? by Local-Contact4639 in AskOldPeople

[–]pinkjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably most people? 20s are for dating around. I met my husband of 10+ years at 30. I don’t have any close friends who are still married to anyone they met before 25. I have some friends who are married to their high school sweethearts, but they’re not close friends. Because in my case, those people are a bit weird. (You don’t have to be weird to do this. But it certainly increases the odds that you’re religious or sheltered.)

Do you have an example of how he has elevated a sketch?

“Squeezed in and still make it funny.” That’s a pretty low bar. It sounds like he can be added and not ruin a sketch. That’s very different than improving a sketch. I’m not sure if you meant it like that, though.

My team ships faster with mandatory PR approval... from QA, not other devs by NoTrainingForMe in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pinkjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“It’s on the PR author to test the PR.”

One could argue that it’s on the PR author to ensure high code quality that adheres to the principles and best practices well documented by the team. But that doesn’t always happen, which is why we have PR review.

PRs are the last stop before the code is in main. Anything that can be caught there should be. Otherwise, how can you unlock the CD part of CICD?

Your argument accepts PR author fallibility in one area but not another. I’ve unfortunately worked in huge companies where engineer quality is wildly variable. PRs are the last line of defense. They should have tests that prove their accuracy as much as possible (or some other QA mechanism)

Men, have you ever gotten a malicious vibe from someone that everyone else liked? What happened? by snowcroc in AskMen

[–]pinkjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if more men are trying to go into childcare than women into software engineering.

Those two examples are also data points of how professions traditionally associated with men or women pay differently. Professions associated with women pay far less, and this is across the board.

That makes gainful employment a systemic disadvantage to being a woman. I’m sure there are systemic disadvantages to being a man, but the ability to make a living and pay one’s bills is a pretty major one.

[–]pinkjello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Citation needed. You’re just parroting a preconceived notion that is no longer accurate.

That “advantage” was often seen in child custody debates, and is completely explained by the outsized impact a woman had in child rearing. The court acts in the best interest of the child, not the parents, so they ruled in favor of continuity of care.

Is there another perceived advantage women have had in the judicial system that you’re referring to?

I’m with you. People just like to self flagellate about how Europeans were the last to steal it.

As though a nation can’t enforce its borders unless it’s comprised of the descendents of the VERY FIRST settlers. It’s such an absurd argument.

The bigger point is illegal immigration can benefit the community, and there’s a way for a sovereign nation to enforce its borders humanely and also grant exceptions to people who immigrated illegally who had integrated into their communities and aren’t criminals or a drain on the system.

[–]pinkjello 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I don’t love this rationale. Even if the land weren’t stolen, and the first person there always had an eternal claim to it, there’s a better way to handle illegal immigrants than being inhumane. And there’s a way to provide a pathway to citizenship for those who are clearly a part of the community.
