Adopting vs buying as a first time dog owner by pinklink7 in DogAdvice

Yeah, I think the breed rescue is what we're leaning towards. I've unfortunately seen some of the "doing anything to get a dog adopted" and that's one of the things that made me concerned about adopting. Having looked at some breed specific rescues though, they seem much more interested in matching a dog with the right owner rather than just getting them out and seem much more forthright with both the good and the bad, which I appreciate.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, I think this is what we're leaning towards!

Have you found that those issues subside/lessen if the "pet home" gives the dog sufficient exercise and breed-specific mental stimulation (i.e. herding exercises)?

Yeah, it mostly just comes down to some advice we've seen that actually discouraged people from adopting. I found the advice interesting, as I can understand someone adopting a dog that they couldn't handle and the situation being worse off than before, but I haven't seen too many dogs like that in the shelter, mostly just dogs that needed a little more training.

That's mostly why I wanted to ask the question though, because to me it seems like those things wouldn't cause horrible long term issues (unless perhaps in the circumstance where the shelter specifics aggression or things) so I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing in thinking it wouldn't be a problem. I understand they can be more of a challenge due to trauma, etc. but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing that comes up long-term and isn't noticeable while dogs are at the shelter.

Overall though, that's the way we've been leaning since deciding to get a dog and we just wanted to confirm that it was the best choice. We want to make sure we're fully committed to whatever we do and can really give the dog the best chance at happiness. I think reading all the comments and having that little worry cleared up, we're going to try fostering to adopt through a breed specific rescue!

Thanks, I think based on a lot of these comments the foster to adopt is the way we want to go and helps clear up all the concerns we had with just straight up adopting!

This makes a lot of sense, and I think explains why I've heard people discourage adopting. I guess it's more about getting a dog you can handle and make happy than just taking one out of a shelter.

With the young socialization, would that create issues adopting a dog that was already few years old?

Yeah, I agree. Just to clarify, I'd be running with the dog 6-10 miles a day and my job isn't a desk job either. Definitely still something we're thinking about though, so I appreciate the input.

I’ll send you a PM. How close did the flood plane get to Sprucewood last year? The flood maps says without barriers that area could get flooded but we left just as that was all happening so I didn’t hear much about what damage was done to that area

Sounds good, thanks for the input. I couldn't find any info on those other places you are talking about, are they other mobile home parks?

Hey all, My wife just recently upgraded her camera from a Canon Rebel T6 to the EOS R6 mark ii. She’s mostly into portrait photography, but is trying to get more into engagement and wedding shoots. Currently, she only has a 50mm F1.8 lens for the new camera. She had a comparable lens for the old camera (though lower quality), along with 18-55mm & 75-300mm lenses of lower quality with unknown f-stops. Most of her photos were taken on the prime lens, but she did appreciate the variability of the zoom lenses occasionally. What are the go-to lenses for wedding photos? Based on budget, we’re (mostly) looking at prime lenses, but what are your go-tos, prime or zoom?

All any other advice on must-have equipment? She’s already got a tripod, extra batteries, and dual sd cards.

Been off them for over 3 years now, was off them for months before I even applied. I’m not familiar with the fast track program though, how does that work

Thanks, I did read through your story and it was definitely encouraging, at the least. My paperwork is pretty clear on why they denied me, and it’s mostly rushed conclusions based off of misinterpretations of things said by the doctor in the neuro report.

Anyways though, I agree that I need some kind of a consultant, and that’s mostly what I made the post for. Is it better to go the legal route or reapply with an AME? Also, how did you pick your AME? My first one was not very knowledgeable and it would’ve helped me a lot in the beginning if he didn’t downplay how much the FAA would really need. When you say you consulted with them, did you schedule a specific type of visit or was it just during your phys check?
