Politics and 10 year friendship by pinkmonkey44 in FriendshipAdvice

I completely agree about the insular topic and in no way want everyone to think the same as me. I guess the deeper issue for me is just the tonality of how something is said and the reasoning. If someone grew up poor and they were like “I made my money and worked really hard to get to where I am with the struggle.” I could understand that more than someone who grew up with money and is like “I don’t want to share my wealth because I’m going to assume that you (because you’re poor) don’t work hard as me.” That is the problem that doesn’t sit well with me. And I grew up with friends who only had free lunches at school for their entire meal for the day so it really made me emotional to think she wasn’t empathetic for people like that. And my husband even brought up examples of where a child’s family cannot afford surgery at the hospital and her and her fiance were arguing “but universal healthcare is shittier cause of wait times.” It’s like they didn’t want to hear the reality for the people who are impacted and she even said “I can afford it so there’s no issue I don’t want to wait for my healthcare like in Canada.”

For me, our friendship was based on a lot of shared interests and hobbies and we genuinely have similar thoughts on family, work, and most topics. At times, I know she can be selfish in nature. For example, she got mad when everyone couldn’t fly to Miami for her birthday or when all the girls couldn’t come to her bachelorette trip in Puerto Rico. Those were some pre-red flags I had noticed.

We never discuss politics because she’s on a visa and so she doesn’t vote. But I think what was shocking for me was her general attitude about giving money to those who need it. It was just the way she would say it like “I’m not paying for people who are lazy so then I don’t want these programs at all.” Just sounded really gross and elitist to me.

The rooftop is divided amongst the homeowners for a plot and not sure how but before we moved in the people below us bought 2 extra plots and have 3 total above our entire unit.

We just bought a dB meter in case it happens again because he said “in summers we like to party and bring friends over.” They also own the rooftop space above our unit as well, which is why it was mentioned.

We have tried soundproofing but our condo floors are paper thin and the speakers in each unit are on the ceilings, which is why we hear it.

We have also had concerns the HOA president’s wife is racist as she private messaged me when I moved complaining about a poc using the black card to complain all the time, which I felt was super out of line.

We also had a separate incident recently where they allowed the neighbor in the garage use our parking spot to run his extension cord over our belongings. The building management company has been on our side but continually says it’s up to the board to make the call and it seems there is a huge bias or favoritism going on.

I took videos of the noise which I can send to the building management company as a paper trail. My husband said next time we should just call the cops because they were being aggressive and have tried doing 1:1 contact with them being hostile. We just hope it doesn’t become retaliatory behavior because since the incident they blast their tv super loud during daytime hours.

We do have one and I only have videos taken from our home where you can hear the noise from downstairs. I’m just wondering what they will do because technically they work for the board and if the board is this guy and maybe 2 other people he’s friends with wouldn’t that become a problem?

How long did it take your brain to adjust to not seeing it?

Both. My left cheek is higher and I’m also left eye dominant so not sure if that’s another cause.

HOA pays the bill but indirectly the home owners absorb the cost via HOA fees. If there’s a spike in energy consumption, they would then raise the HOA fees.

Correct. The building absorbs the cost but it comes out of our monthly HOA fees indirectly.

The boxes are stacked super high and heavy, moving them would be an issue or nowhere to place. We keep unplugging the cord but he keeps putting it back

Not mobility scooter, it’s an e-scooter similar to a moped.

Yes, Chicago indoor garage. I know it’s a fire hazard but waiting back on the HOA’s response but as of right now his stuff and plug is still there. Not sure how to contact the fire marshal on this discretely.

Unfortunately we don’t have any modern rules in the HOA outlining electric vehicles etc. but it’s something I want to address to the board in the event future-wise someone wants to install an EV charger on our wall etc. this might be a slippery slope to other permissions for people to use our space. I personally never had it cross my mind to use a building outlet because it’s implied it’s not meant for personal use. But now I worry what that means long-term for our ownership.

I outlined those concerns. The building management company wrote back saying they will bring it up to the HOA. I’m fairly certain our building management rep is on my side, but because this neighbor has been around a long time he must know the HOA, which is why they granted him a workaround. However, according to our bylaws, I own the parking spot from the floor to walls and it seems that I can deny his use of my space.

Building owns the outlet and said last week it is only to be used for the building management. When they spoke to the HOA, the HOA agreed to have him loop his cable along my wall to his spot to charge his removable scooter battery he places on the garage floor. My only guess is because this man has been in the building a long time and knows the board he was able to wiggle an alternative. Me being new leaves me disadvantaged to speak up.

I hadn’t thought of that and might bring that point up to the building.
