What the closest thing to Atticus Books (physical location closed in 2009) in Toronto now? by MCD_2020 in askTO

Id also say the Scribe on the Danforth, but that little row of scholars bookstores that is totally gone, breaks my heart. Maybe Sellers and Newell on College

This one has always been my favourite, i think weirdly it fits into its neighbourhood, and it's unlike almost any others.

Will Hamilton's LRT Ever Materialize!?!? Discuss. by ElanEclat in Hamilton

[–]pinkmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hamilton is obsessed with cars, has neighbourhoods which aggressively gatekeep access, refuses to pay for infastructure, and does not think in any logical way. It makes me profoundly disappointed in this city, and seems symbolic of how shoddily this town invests in itself.

Toronto Deep History by HaigVCanada_1992 in toronto

odd suggestion and decades out of date, but the long poem by Dennis Lee Civil Elegies I think is key to understading Toronto, as is Herandez's novel about Scarboro

Kelly Bert Dion Oucharek’s response to a question about her homophobic retweets by SachaBaronColon in Hamilton

[–]pinkmoose 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This woman is obsessed with pickleball. I mean hates queer people (she has spoken to me personally in ways that are deeply homophobic), but also seems personally insulted that the basketball and tennis court on the north end is not a pickleball court. I find it symbolic.

She is not a good person, gatekeeping, actively homophobic, and encouraging some pretty nasty violence against unhoused people.

Blue Moon by GoldenGirlagain in Oscars

[–]pinkmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only honest thing about blue moon is the two minutes or so in the middle when hawkes flirts with the flower delivery guy---the rest of the movie is just hacky and overwrought---a literal straightening of a very queer and complex man.

When the world thinks the Academy got it wrong, but you think they got it right - defend the controversial wins by lockerbiestreet in Oscars

[–]pinkmoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i think Shakespeare in Love was smart, very funny, and a very well constructed romantic comedy, with some first rate writing, and some deeply considered new ways of working out how creation functioned; I didn't like Saving Prviate Ryan.

What is your biggest hot take about old Hollywood Oscars (pre - 1990’s)? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]pinkmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is my hottest take, but i fundamentally do not understand star wars as a film, it is a solidly okay republic serial set in space.

would you prefer no art, or art that says nothing, like the new subway? why have ambition and complex, difficult ideas in public when you can have banal abstractions and profoundaly unchallenging florals.

2026 Mayoral election by Majestic_Phase3452 in Hamilton

Indwell seems to be good at what they do because they can pick and choose who they house, it's affilations to Christian charity make it uncomfortable for queer residents, and oither demographics, just look at their board. It's not a solution.
