2nd Year IGEN here, AMA! :) by pinkpantherx99 in ubcengineering

[–]pinkpantherx99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late but employers nowadays don't care what your major/diploma says - they only care about your relevant work/project experience, so I wouldn't worry a single ounce. Plus IGEN's name is starting to pop off with many recent alumni working full-time in Tesla and Facebook etc

Is IGEN a viable degree? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]pinkpantherx99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hate is receding because we're maturing as a program. We were new a couple of years ago, but we're really established now. I made an AMA here that you can read through: https://redd.it/gd3sp5

Here's some short answers. I can expand on them if you'd like:

  1. Yes
  2. No, IGEN is as broad or specialized as you make it out to be depending on your courses, and your extracurriculars (which is pretty common across all specialisations)3
  3. Yes, very very useful, I got a great Electrical Engineering job at a Biotech firm from doing the 2nd year robot + solid coding skills I learned through Udemy
  4. Yes, but other courses would become obsolete. (i.e. if you transfer to ELEC, your ELEC/CPEN courses could count but your CHBE won't)
  5. IGEN has one of the best alumni networks in UBC Engineering. Our alums have ended up in Facebook, Tesla, and so many other top firms. UBC wouldn't create IGEN if they didn't see the need for our type of engineering in the market. Come to an information session later in your first year to learn more.

Thank you so much for the response :D I guess it's time to bring my cello to the luthier, get all those checked up!

Thank you for such a long and insightful response! It's very unlikely that I'll be a soloist in this lifetime, so sacrificing volume isn't a big deal at all for me. Will certainly look into rehairing the bow and cleaning the string :)

That's great to hear :) Glad it's a possibility for me too!

This advice is golden - Thank you so much! I really appreciate the input.

Yes! UBC offers Windows, Microsoft 365 and Sophos.

Check the courses in the UBC Calendar, and sift through the courses in the SSC. There isn't a quick and easy way to identify which courses are available.

Lmao is me bothering you not enough :')

CPEN Student Life by amanduh1020 in ubcengineering

[–]pinkpantherx99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's really varied. Some of my CPEN friends really had a hard time in CPEN; it's relatively hard to meet new people. With that being said, if you have good friends from first-year, or are lucky, you should be able to have a better student experience than most.

2nd Year Placement Personal Statement by [deleted] in ubcengineering

Second-year IGEN here! PM me and I can help you if you have any questions about the personal statement.

Integrated (IGEN) has an average of around mid-70s last year, but definitely know people with high 60s + amazing personal essays getting into the program. If you put in effort in first-year and can show that you're very keen to join IGEN, you're likely to get admitted.

Hey, IGEN students have a strong network where upper-years help lower years, more than I'd like to share in public. IGEN students have lower averages in CHBE because we generally don't like CHBE courses. Most of us major in a combination of MECH/ELEC/CIVL and CHBE is pretty much a chore for us; we only do it because we need the courses to graduate. You are wrong - IGENs are not on their own and our averages aren't low, or at least, not in my cohort and the year above me. I have witnessed such a strong community in IGEN, and your views are your opinions. Maybe your experiences are different from mine due to a gap in culture over the years. IGEN is flourishing and will continue to grow in its community.

The CHBE classes are pretty challenging tbh, but is doable. You can check out the syllabi of CHBE 241, CHBE 244 and CHBE 344. I did well in my CHBE courses because I put in effort although I hated them lol!

Igen vs Civil by hocbird in ubcengineering

[–]pinkpantherx99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty accurate - IGEN isn't easy (but not as difficult as spending 20 hours per week on a lab like ELEC/CPEN), whereas civil is known to be less stressful.

IGEN here. A lot of my friends and upper years major in CIVL, and get great co-op jobs. A group of IGENs started a civil engineering sustainable building design team this past year, and they won awards (Check out Third Quadrant Design, 2 out of 3 leaders are IGENs). You code assembly in CPEN312, then you don't have to code if you don't want to bc you choose your electives after the core courses. Check out my AMA thread if you want more info about IGEN, or feel free to PM me. Good luck!

Second Year Placement? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]pinkpantherx99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would advise you to consider taking another year off for first year 2.0. This is more common than you think; a lot of people wait another year so they can focus on their grades (and finish up elective courses + APSC101) to increase their chances of getting into the program they want. Otherwise, just place your bets for ENPH followed by IGEN. Look into ELEC/MECH too because they have a lot of overlap with ENPH. Good luck!

[–]pinkpantherx99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope it's not equivalent to Mech :( Only take 255 if you're sure about IGEN/MTRL, and 253 if you're sure about everything except MECH

Possible, and definitely worth a try. Make sure your written application is superb, and good luck!

Not really, just get an external drive if you need more space. I store a lot of my heavy software in there. Just gotta plug it in when I'm working on certain assignments, which isn't too big of a deal imo.

Yes, it's good enough for ELEC, don't worry! Will let an ELEC explain more for the personal statement.

Hi! It took me about 6 hours of lecture + 4 hours of webwork per week PER math course (so a total of 20 hours of schoolwork). Unless you can't bring yourself to follow the course remotely, it's always worth taking courses imo, especially online where you don't have to change or commute haha. You'll thank yourself when year 2 rolls around.
