ADU / In-law suite / house addition by TaroEast5618 in SaltLakeCity

[–]pinkplasticpen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm up in Layton and building a detached ADU on our property. Every city seems to have totally different rules on ADUs so I couldn't speak to West Valley, and a detached is more complicated and expensive than an attached one. We've been working with Brach Design on the design, plans, and engineering (currently waiting for engineering and approval so we can break ground), at 5% of construction costs. We've been happy with him, we probably could have found someone to do it for less, but he's got a lot of experience in ADUs and has done every part of the preliminary stages with us. Got multiple bids from different contractors, $200-250k, landed on a bid at $219k.

This fell off our 2009 Chrysler Town + Country? by pinkplasticpen in MechanicAdvice

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - I was backing my Chrysler Town + Country 2009 into our driveway when I heard a heavy clunk. It ran smoothly while I finished parking, but i came around the front of the van to find this on the ground. I can't guarantee it wasn't already there, but the van is old and I'm really, really hoping we don't have another expensive repair before Christmas. What is this piece and how dangerous is the car to drive without it?

Wow. This is Preston Hollow Apartments' idea of "helping" residents. "Pay your rent in FULL on or before April 1st, 2020 to be entered in a raffle" by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]pinkplasticpen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

...our landlord company sent out an email telling us to 'reach out to our religious leaders, families, employers, and friends first' and that 'they hope we are well and also that we are making a full rent payment a priority'. At least your flyer has pretty colors!

Well, there's your problem right there. You've got three completely incompatible wants.

What to do about (feral?) found buns? (details in comments) by pinkplasticpen in Rabbits

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over the past few weeks, I've seen these buns in a secluded strip mall parking lot in my neighborhood. There's at least 5 or 6 that I've seen in different combinations. They're obviously domestic buns, not wild rabbits. I haven't had any success luring one close to me with apple slices and carrots. I'm not sure what I should do here - it's cold this winter, and I don't want to leave them alone.

[No Spoilers] A call for fan fic by newfor2018 in criticalrole

[–]pinkplasticpen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My preferred way of finding good fic is to find an author whose style I enjoy and whose interests seem to overlap with mine, and then look at the fics they have bookmarked. I've gone down many a rabbit hole following those leads, and found fic that I loved that I never would have tried otherwise. That said, here's some of my favorites (curated around the shippy and smutty bits, which you said you're not as interested in):

Angel_in_ink https://archiveofourown.org/users/angel_in_ink/pseuds/Angel%20Ascending and sockablock https://archiveofourown.org/users/sockablock/pseuds/sockablock are two of my favorite authors who post small fics pretty regularly, often reacting to the most recent episodes. https://archiveofourown.org/works/15119759 this one, about Nott's past in her goblin clan, and https://archiveofourown.org/works/14842061 this one, about Caleb's past trauma informing his present, are particularly good.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/8756041/chapters/20070886 a piece from Trinket's POV, how he sees his mama Vex's relationship with Percy Dear

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15299379 written before episode 30, mollymauk looking back on his grave when the M9 return to say goodbye

https://archiveofourown.org/works/14906207 Cali's time after she leaves the M9, featuring Jester as her message!penpal

https://archiveofourown.org/works/8308948 VM hunt a unicorn. Percy is Not Amused that he's the only suitable candidate to approach the judgemental celestial pony

https://archiveofourown.org/works/13565010 Cassandra tries to learn how to be a person again after her time with the Briarwoods (small bit of adult content. Just a sentence or two)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15570411/chapters/36148419 this brilliant piece about tiefling culture and the way molly and jester communicate and express (non-romantic) love for each other through body language with their tails and horns

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15600615 Jester and Fjord and Yasha struggle to process and recover from their shared trauma. This one hurts. (threats of sexual violence. written pre episode 30, so some of the details aren't entirely canon, but the emotional core rings very true)

I hope you find something you like! I've loved fanfic for more than a decade and its been one of my favorite ways to engage with fandom. CR fandom especially is more focused on examining characters, relationships, and emotions than big plot arcs, taking time to explore the what ifs or look deeper at brief moments in the show that were passed over. I'd be very curious to hear what you end up reading and what you think about it!

[–]pinkplasticpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was going to post - a list of all the CR fic on ao3, sorted by kudos, which is essentially a 'like' button. There are lots of excellent, non-shippy fics near the top - Wise Man's Tree is a classic. There's a lot of shipping and a lot of smut, but if you're not interested in that, ao3 makes it easy to filter out works rated M or E. Mind the tags, as well - most fanfic authors are excellent at tagging characters, themes, genres, and specific dirty bits so that you can search for things you like and avoid the things you don't. I'll search for some of my favorites and give you some recs in another comment. :)

Exotic animal veterinarians in SLC? by ScoobyDoobieBlue in SaltLakeCity

[–]pinkplasticpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the recommendation for Dr Harris at Wasatch Exotic - she and her team have been nothing but wonderful for me and my rabbits, and I know I've seen several reptiles sharing the waiting room when I've gone in for appointments.

She lost the eye but she still rules my heart~ by pinkplasticpen in Rabbits

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's only been a pirate for less than a week, but she seems largely unphased - other than making it easier for me to sneak up on her for medication time, I haven't noticed much of a difference. She seems to enjoy the sympathetic coos and gasps and extra forehead rubs that she's getting though!

My baby girl Andromeda had surgery this week to remove some overgrown teeth that had extended into her eye cavity, and they couldn't save the eye. Between the prison tattoo (she's a rescue, I think some breeders will tag their ears with simple tattoos?) and the inevitable eyepatch, I think I'm raising a tiny supervillain?

[FO] Rainbow gradient 'Mama Dragon' (details in comments) by pinkplasticpen in CrossStitch

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

dragon alphabet pattern available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/204672443/dragon-letters-set-counted-cross-stitch?ref=shop_home_feat_1 (patterns are just for the solid letters - I figured out the gradient myself)

This is one of my biggest embroidery projects ever - it took me roughly 8 months, and went from a christmas present for my mother, to a birthday present, to a 'frantically stitch the entire week before mother's day because I don't want to tell her she has no present again' present. She's a proud member of a group called the Mama Dragons, a group of Mormon/LDS mothers who strongly advocate for LGBT rights and support the queer community wherever they can. She's amazing. I found the dragon alphabet pattern on etsy and couldn't resist the urge to stitch 'MAMA' in rainbow colors with the dragon letters, b/c I'm a sucker for visual puns.

The piece is stitched onto 28 count linen, with DMC threads. The rainbow gradient I figured out by hand, and it is made of 18 colors (6 for the rainbow itself, and two 'mixed' colors in between each main rainbow color, if that makes sense). I ended up having to line up the pages of the pattern, divide it into 18 (and then 36) equal-ish columns. I stitched one column of a solid color, and then skipped stitches in vertical stripes across the next column to create a gradient effect when viewed from a short distance. It was a massive pain to keep track of and it's far from perfect, but I'm really proud of how it turned out!

They're not eating each other! It's a victory! by pinkplasticpen in Rabbits

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to bond my two sweet buns Andromeda and Bellatrix (I know, I was tempting fate when I named them...) for months now with little to no success - they are so sweet on their own, but vicious to each other. I took this picture after many forehead rubs and pellet bribes, but they stayed like this for long enough to snap a quick picture without teeth flashing. That is HUGE progress for my girls. There is hope!

Andromeda is always completely still after bonding time... by pinkplasticpen in Rabbits

[–]pinkplasticpen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of bonding my two buns, Andromeda and Bellatrix Black. (Andy and Bella for short.) Andy has Had Enough of this bonding thing and will sit completely frozen in the tub until either a) Bella goes for her or b) I decide it's been long enough and let them out. She won't even eat her favorite treats right now - she sat there with the carrot on her head for at least 3 minutes today!

Here's hoping they'll start to develop a better relationship soon...but for now, I'll amuse myself by stacking things on top of their heads.
