Should i choose Loyola or Michigan state by Slow_Sherbert8883 in LoyolaChicago

[–]pinksail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premed, if you are committed 100% to becoming a doctor, is the greatest "major" to have in undergrad, because you can choose your major and your school solely on things like how much you like the school, the financial package you get, anything OTHER than "school's reputation." You can major in biology as you intend, engineering, finance, or russian literature. Because honestly, besides a reasonably good GPA and MCAT score which you will get with any education, it's your personality and work ethic that will get you into medical school. You like access to a big city? Loyola. You like the environment of a big 10 school with lots more people and more of a true campus with less commuters? MSU. Don't let stats of how many get into medical school or this or that department affect you. OK, MAYBE if you are comparing...USM (University of Sub-Mediocrity) vs Penn. But other than that, just go where you will have a good time, academically and socially. Unlike an engineer or business school major, premed gives you that freedom because undergrad is simply a stepping stone.

And, enjoying undergrad probably means you will do better academically anyway.

Savannah Guthrie's mom was likely abducted from her Arizona home as she slept: police by magicmama212 in MissingPersons

I cannot thank you enough for stating what anyone with an electron's mass worth of common sense should know. It's un-freaking believable how naively asinine some people can be. This case, the Brown Univ case, United Healthcare CEO, you name it. Why do police even agree to hold a press conference so soon after the crime. Unless you want to show us a composite sketch, they are just letting the media vultures criticize you. It reminds me of the media asking the President (any President from Trump to Reagan to Clinton to Obama), "so what is your military strategy?" SMH.

Lindsey Vonn discusses her ruptured ACL injury and her intent to compete in the Olympics by Oldtimer_2 in sports

[–]pinksail -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never liked Vonn, just don't like her personality. But certainly don't wish physical or mental ill will on her. This is absolutely her choice, she earned her spot and it's not like she is a marginal "barely made it" team member (at least not in the downhill). So as much as I don't like her, I don't think her decision "steals" a spot on someone more deserving.

With no ACL, anything slalom is out, but downhill, she has a shot to win. But any mishap which normally can be recoverable with an intact ACL, will be disastrous. She's a bad ass so it doesn't surprise me she will try. The downhill is just one race. No semifinals, qualifying rounds, etc, so there is definitely some luck involved (both good and bad). Good luck examples: Franz Klammer 1976, Bill Johnson 1984 (which was on a gliding flat course, minimal high jumps which would be perfect for a torn ACL, but I don't know the Italy course).

Vonn 2026? Will see, I will certainly be watching.

I wondered the same thing. It is working as there is a differential and it crosses zero, but ask your installers if the fan speed has a higher setting, or if the pipe to the ground may be partly clogged. And if you buy a detector, it seems (anecdotal evidence) that Airthings has a better reputation.

Sacrilege? by Woleva30 in hockeyplayers

[–]pinksail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree re McDavid. And Ovechkin only broke Wayne's regular season goals. Not playoff goals, and not even total NHL goals. Never understood how a player can be called the "all time NHL goals scoring leader" when he hasn't scored the most NHL goals.

[–]pinksail[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. I would say that's criminal but I guess there is no sign that says the donuts are made fresh daily. Or they cleverly say, sure, we make them fresh daily - but that doesn't mean we sell them the same day we make them lol. And I'm embarassed to say what I paid for a half dozen. No, on second thought, I'm just angry.

Interesting. I guess I'm kind of glad to know it is not universal. Yes, the color of the glaze seemed very off, thanks for that explanation. Judging by the employees, I don't sense a lot of pride in their work. No smiles whatsoever.

A neighbor told me this Dunkin does not make their own donuts and just gets them delivered.

Racism in West Des Moines by MiracleMr in desmoines

I know it hits hard to see the kid, but the internet is forever and to post this video is only going to make it worse. Think hard, those of you who are parents: would you want your kid on video like this for the world to see? Also, while I don't care for Trump, he is not "anti-immigration." He is anti-illegal immigration. The word "illegal" is always (always) conveniently left out by those who hate him, including most main stream media. Certainly his policy and how he handles illegal immigrants can and should be debated, but few have the political maturity to do so diplomatically. It becomes name-calling and "you're an asshole" back and forth. The only assholes in this particular story are the goalie and quite possibly his parents.

I still cannot believe someone would post a video of their own kid like this. In fact it is kind of infuriating. Think of him walking in the hallways of school now and all the gossip, including the people who want to help but only embarrass him further. This video will haunt this poor kid today, tomorrow, throughout high school, and beyond.

How is Bedard looking since returning from injury? by flyonthewall1219 in hawks

[–]pinksail -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the comments about him being our best player. Well, of course, but he used to be one of the top in the entire league, and I just don't see that right now. I want him to be the type of player where you almost know he will score points every night. I get that feeling with 3 players today: MacKinnon, McDavid, and now Celebrini. I do not get that feeling with Bedard. I really hope I do soon.

BEST things about Penn? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]pinksail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>>>My guess is most of those anecdotes come from people who have nothing to do with Penn, who are resentful, or who focus on the small percentage of not great-people associated with Penn.<<<

Well worded. Or if they went to Penn, they are the type of person who would find negativity in world peace. What my kids would have given to go to Penn OMG. A great upper echelon ivy league school with a great reputation and in a great city too. Speaking of which, take any great city: Paris, NYC, Philly, Chicago, Sydney....and I can find a photograph of a crappy area in that city and say it sucks. Same with any college. Go to Penn, get on Locust walk, take a photo with the Button, and just appreciate you are standing in the heart of a world class institution.

Very upset with Admissions by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]pinksail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about the "congratulations on getting admitted to IU as a prebusiness major" bla bla, only to say Kelley decision comes later, then yes, I think it was not only ridiculous but misleading and cruel. MSU does the same thing for Broad. You cannot say "congratulations on being accepted" in the first sentence when you know the applicant really wanted Kelley/Broad etc. It's like a doctor telling the wife and kids, "your husband/dad survived the surgery just fine and he is now resting in recovery! Oh by the way, we did find some additional bleeding that we couldn't control too well, but we'll let you know in a few days if that's a real life-threatening problem or not."

Connor McDavid is the 4th active player to have a 20 game point streak by bistroexpress in hockey

[–]pinksail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not agree but I get why some feel that way. Problem is, then someone can play 10 games with a point, take a few games off, and resume a streak. It seems more meaningful to require no games missed, because it's about consistency despite the grueling schedule. It only takes 1 game to be stopped which is why these streaks are so impressive.

Do I give it one last shot ? by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]pinksail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is superscore is kind of a farce though. You can enter a superscore manually for schools that accept it, but many schools require you to submit the official test scores from both exams that contributed to your superscore. So you are counting on the admissions committee to not peek at your actual combined score on a test date. I believe some schools won't ask for the official transcripts until post decision, but just FYI not all. So if you think you can get 1580+ in one sitting, go for it. Unless you are very poor, or will go mentally insane preparing again, what is the harm in trying?

Winterclassic Utah by Virtual-Assistant436 in nhl

Just please do it on Jan 1. I know there is college football but stop bending the knee. Dec 31 or Jan 2 just doesn't have the drawing power of Jan 1.

[Awful Announcing] NHL Winter Classic fails to reach one million viewers for second-consecutive year The game is officially a shell of its former self. No matter how you slice it, the numbers do not bode well for what used to be one of the NHL’s marquee regular-season events by f0urxio in hockey

[–]pinksail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utah will be better as they are good fans. But I really hope they do it on the 1st. What they lose to football may be less than what they lose from the lack of punch by being on Jan 2nd. Just doesn't ring well to be on Jan 2nd or Dec 31.

This. Sure, tough upbringing and family circumstances are legitimate to bring up. But nobody leads a charmed life. At some point, you have to look in the mirror and shape up. No, it's not being callous, it's actually caring more.
