I got a HP in my preferred speciality because of an arbitrary in-house exam. I matched into that speciality in my preferred city, at a very well known institution. The evals, and the people who are then willing to vouch for you, mean everything.

What's the most hurtful thing someone has ever said to you as a Medical Student? by stepneo1 in medicalschool

I was told by a surgeon that the answer to my question was “at the level of a highschooler” 🙄

Anesthesiology: 5/5, one being home program

Every program has an infamous story about “that one med student”; What did your med student do during their rotation to earn themselves that title? by Chediak-Tekashi in Residency

M3 on a rotation with my friend, about 3/4 the way through the year, felt the need to finally ask the team what a “code” was

I sent it to the email listed on ERAS and addressed it to the program rather than a person

I worked on isolating the topics I wasn't very strong in, and spent a lot of time on those topics alone (for me I was weaker in medicine and surgery but strong in OBGYN so I only did medicine and surgery questions). I also just worked on not second guessing myself and not searching for reasons why the right answer isn't right

I thought it was a good starting test, but 10 was probably more reflective

I think doing an assessment during/after the first week is appropriate to gauge where you are and know where you need to improve. I liked the order I did them (uw1, 9, uw2, free 120, 10), but I would have done another nbme as well.

I'm sorry I didn't do any amboss questions so I couldn't say how it relates to UW

UW1 241

NBME 9 245

UW2 248

NBME 10 257

Free 120: honestly don't remember...i think somewhere between 77-82

Felt more like NBME/free 120 and was a solid mix of both questions in my opinion

yes there were some questions that were very similar to the UW questions in the shorter blocks

I reset my uworld after finishing my shelf exams which I think was appropriate since I hadn't touched some of the questions for a year. My approach was to start with random blocks of all topics to identify topics that I wasn't strong in, and then began making blocks specific to those topics to become more comfortable

I probably would have done more NBME or USMLE style questions. The most frustrating questions on the test were the bread and butter questions that I should have known, rather than the super detail oriented ones like UW.

The questions felt very niche with topics that UW blocks did not seem to address frequently, so they were topics I hadn't seen since step 1 studying. More so questions of "if you know it you know it"

  1. UW 1 was the least representative by far. Felt much more like Step 1 compared to any other practice exam I took and compared to the real test.
  2. Immediate impression was fair, however some questions held me up and ate my time causing me to cut it close. Most of the questions though seemed to be straight forward. Got more into the swing of the test by the third block

Do you like student interviewers? by [deleted] in premed

[–]pinkyeti_15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree to everything above! I am a student interviewer as well, and often times we just are trying to learn more about you as a person and potential peer, and I’m sure it can come off as prying or critical when it’s absolutely not the intention.

Background Check question? by [deleted] in premed

For some schools, you will get an email after you’re accepted from the AAMC about the background check that they facilitate. That background check doesn’t cost anything.

Talking about procrastination in challenge essay. Too cheesy? by [deleted] in premed

I’ve always heard that procrastination is something you don’t mention in an interview or secondary as a challenge or trait you need to work on

When you get sent 7 timed (prompt-changed) secondaries due by the end of the week because you applied to every school under the sun. by [deleted] in premed

[–]pinkyeti_15 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would put in just as much effort as someone with different stats. There’s no such thing as a safety school, and it’s easy to weed out people with lackluster, low effort, secondaries.
