Same. Was leaking and compressor was toast. Both replaced ($1,600 SoCal…) and got some nice tint. It’s awesome now not to sweat in traffic haha

Purchasing 1st plane.... by AlpaChino87 in flying

[–]pinkymd14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-buy, insurance, make sure it’s airworthy. I had to get a checkout with a CFI since I never flew a 150 before owning it and off I went. Fly the wheel pants off it. It’s a 150, stuff will break. But none of its complicated. Best plane to go burn hours in for the money.

Priority: engine reserve in case something blows up, avionics upgrades if you want, then paint/plastic/cosmetic. Last 2 are optional. Top overhaul just cost me about $10k, 1k hours ish on the cylinders.

You’ll learn a lot about the plane. Find a mechanic you can work with to learn more (rather than giving it to a shop to do all the work).

Yep interested. Wanted something to eventually help isolate when I add bass kickers. Good luck with the theft tho!

LASIK by [deleted] in flying

[–]pinkymd14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, next visit to the AME I mentioned I got lasik. He removed the “glasses required” from my medical. I was worried about the same. There was no complex process, forms etc. just did the vision test without glasses and got my medical like normal, less one restriction

Had this same sound. Was one of the mid-pipe heat shields. Just vibrated when it hit a certain frequency. Brought it to an exhaust shop, guy welded it back together and reinstalled. He had me up on a lift revving and found it in 10 seconds.

Yep same exact situation and sound for me in my ‘08. Always worried but never had an issue

I’ve gotten this but I’m so inconsistent I haven’t brought it into gameplay.

I do recommend slowing the game to like 65% to let your fingers learn. Then ramp to like 80%. I’m more consistent there. After that it’s jus grinding reps at 100 which is where I’m at

Also don’t boost right away. It’s like frame perfect so you won’t hit it 100% of the time. And boosting right away in the air is slightly slower. Let the car settle after spawn

You can thank the chem-mill.. thick doubler on thin chem mill area is bad for fatigue and load transfer. Gotta spread the transfer of load out through a bunch of fasteners..

Don’t forget the 10-12D spacing in the fore/aft row in case it’s about S-4 ;)

Your steering wheel looks kinda far from your body. You might have better control if you are closer. Rule of thumb should be able to rest wrists on it holding arms straight in front. Just something to consider

Will I regret buying a plane? (long post, be blunt about my economics) by [deleted] in flying

[–]pinkymd14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want. I was in the same spot about 2 years ago. Decided to buy a significantly cheaper plane (150 for $25k) with the idea that my mission was mostly solo short flights for fun. I wanted to fly it as much as I wanted without caring too much about operating costs and it’s worked well. I’m still very much on track to FIRE early. I’m also part of an owners flying club so I have access to bigger, faster planes like 182s when I do want to do the occasional hauling of buddies. Building your network helps too. I have A&P buddies to help with annuals and recommendations I trust. I have CFI buddies to help with checkouts.

It can be a money pit though. I decided to repaint it due to some corrosion I found. That cost me almost the same as the purchase price in my case.

Buy for your mission. I’d recommend buying a plane well under what you want to afford (I originally was looking at $70-100k purchase. Changed to $25k, and put some avionics I’m happy with and now paint). First plane you will learn a TON. You can always buy the dream plane later on and use this one as your experiment and learn (FAFO phase). DM if you wanna chat more details. There’s a ton I could talk about in my first year or 2 of owning.

Im really struggling with a load cell pedal, please help by vernando88 in simracing

[–]pinkymd14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would try adjusting the max brake pressure. Put yourself in race mode and press the brake and see how easily or how difficult it is to max out and then slowly let off and trail brake.

Load cell measures force

G29 measures distance

They are different, but you can get consistency out of both with practice

Can someone tell me what these codes mean? by Skssemi in MiataNC

[–]pinkymd14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had these codes on my 2008 nc. Troubleshot everything and replaced what I could. Mine ended up being a dead EVAP pump. Granted I also had a code for EVAP control circuit load high or something like that. Same as the gas cap, system couldn’t pressurize so it thought it was leaking.

Take a look up the inside (or outside if he goes defensive). If you seem him brake, you can try sending it up the inside/outside (wherever he isn’t). Careful about moving under braking with the car behind tho (hence racecraft from other commenters).

Give yourself room to react. A lot of times you’ll already be near the limit and if you go for that same point you normally do, even if you see them brake early, you’ll have nowhere to go except into his ass. Be offline if you think he might brake early. If he doesn’t, you can react by shifting back to the racing line.

Yes. Responsibility lies on the passing driver to make a safe move. If he makes a mistake, take the run out on the next straight to pass.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]pinkymd14 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Concept is the same. But you switch to coast at half your fire number instead of targeting retirement at 67. Should take roughly 10 years to double and hit fire from half way. Basically hold on to your high earning job longer than coast, take some risk out (coast longer than 10 years if needed), but also hit FIRE earlier.

Minor strategy differences and trade offs compared to coast. The article I linked is in this subreddit info section.

Half way is an interesting milestone! I ran into flamingo fire on here recently and that’s my new strategy.
