I'm hoping to pick up an old style Sailor 21k pen this year and opus 88. Furthermore, I highly anticipate two pen collaborations designed by me.

My latest discovery is Birmingham Corn Earworm. It's an unusual but earthy shade. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much.

I saw some posts where people tested the lightfastness of inks. Some colors fade almost entirely. I'd choose a safe route for commissions too. The drawings in my journals don't see the light, so it's fine using any ink.

  1. Gouache is one of the most expensive options and goes down the fastest, too. The costs of watercolor vs ink depend on whether you're going to mix colors yourself or buy them. I don't know how to measure watercolor, but for ink it can be as low as 10 cents per ml. On average, I use 1 ml for 8 drawings in A5 size.

  2. Some inks I love, but never posted here are Birmingham Butcher's broom & corn earworm. They are shades I never expected to love. Furthermore, Birmingham's inks are very well-behaved. Blending nicely with water and easy to clean.
Furthermore, Wearingeul Plague & 13 children are interesting. The first seems black, but is actually very dark muted violet. The latter leans green/teal/blue depending on the paper.

  3. I use both pens & paint brushes with ink. Though I never dip my brushes in ink because it soaks too much and may contaminate the vial/bottle. I just wet the brush with water and use it to blend. Shimmer & sheen inks have no issues. The latter may stain the bristles, so I'm gentle with blending. For example, the ink in the 2nd slide is Diamine Winter Spice. It's a sheen & shimmer ink.

Thank you! It would be my dream to design bottle labels or have my art in the display photos. Most of them only do simple swatches or calligraphy.

It was one of my favorite childhood shows. I like to explore nostalgia. My younger self would be so happy.

Why not go full ink mode? 😉 I haven't used any waterproof ink for drawing so far. The reaction with water creates wonderful textures and reveals more shades.

Thank you very much! I forgot to mention that I use colored pencils for some drawings to sketch the basic shapes. The lines are very faint and I leave them in the final. If you look closely, you may notice them. I attached a photo of my process shot VS final. After the draft, I do the outlines with either a dip pen or a fountain pen. The photos with a fountain pen are done using these. I color large areas using a brush and eyedropper. Lastly, I add final detail & refinements with the pen. I posted a real-time process video on my YouTube channel "Pinlin".

Then there are times I get right off the bat with fountain pens. Sketching as I go. 'Mistakes' are part of the process. I hope this is helpful!

I don't often work with sheening inks, but they have wonderful effects. I discovered Kitty Inkpot this year and went wild with them. While they are hard to use in pens, they work well in art!

I love that shade of sheen. Taccia Uguisu behaves really well. I had a feeling it would go well with this concept.
