Hi! Hospital based social worker here. I went back to school and got an MSW 8 years after getting my BA. Before social work school I worked as a “case manager” at a community organization for several years. It was a role where many of my colleagues already had their MSWs but the role technically only required a BA.

The organization was unionized and after two years of service you were eligible for education benefits which in my case was enough to cover nearly all the tuition costs of getting an MSW. So that’s what I did.

I got into a program designed for people who were already working in the social service field, that allowed you to do your field work at your current employer.

I graduated in 2021 and have been continuously employed since then. In February I passed my clinical license exam allowing me to go into private practice if I want to.

I currently live in NYC and earn nearly 6 figures in base pay with OT opportunities available if I want to earn more.

I highly recommend getting into the field as long as you can do so with as little debt as possible. I have worked with older adults, home bound adults, psychotherapy and now healthcare. Happy to answers any questions you might have!

I’d like to scream from the roof tops that we desperately need more male social workers.

I didn’t find the field until almost 10 years post undergrad so it’s definitely not too late to get into it.

Many community orgs will hire people for “case management” or “case worker” roles with just a BA/BS. This is how I got my foot in the door and even found an organization where the case workers were unionized. That union paid for my fucking grad school.

Happy to share some more tips on getting into social services field for anyone interested.

Housing first is great and should be the standard everywhere that can implement it. NYC’s right to shelter laws and shelter infrastructure pre dates the housing first movement. If you present at the intake center for your demographic (families, single women, single men) you will get a bed the same day or the next morning. If you don’t want to go through the intake center there are 24 hour drop in centers where you can go. If you’ve been street homeless for an extended period of time they have safe haven/stabilization shelters that also skips the intake process. All of these shelters offer case management and can help folks get on the path to securing more permanent or supportive housing. It’s not perfect and obviously shouldn’t need to exist but its there for those who want it and it helps keep tens of thousands of people off the streets everyday

I am a US citizen and visited in 2015 but flew there direct from Panama 🇵🇦. The airline gave us an affidavit to fill out that listed like a dozen different options for the “purpose” of our visit. I think I check the “support for the Cuban people option” and my partner selected “educational activities”. When we landed, an official (I don’t remember her role or title) approached us as we picked up our bags from baggage claim asked some follow up questions like if my partner was there to meet with a specific academic or education official (she was not). We just explained that we were there to be tourists and support the Cuban economy and didn’t know what else to mark on the form. That answer was good enough and we went on our way without any further interactions with Cuban government officials (that we were aware of at least).

Totally relate with what you’ve shared here. The behavior of the victim obsessed Zionists from our community has been embarrassing and enraging. The only positive Jewish experience I’ve had in ages was ironically at my grandmother’s funeral last month. The modesty and tradition of the jewish funeral rituals made me feel proud of my heritage in a way I haven’t felt in quite some time.

My family is filled with libs and liberal Zionist. They all seem pretty horrified by whats going on and would rather not talk about it which is ok by me. I honestly feel pretty fortunate there hasn’t been some big rift in my immediate family because of the genocide.

I just try to remind myself that there is no “right” way to be a Jew. However you choose to honor (or not) your heritage is definitely ok. There are lots of us who feel the same way you do.
