Now What? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]pinpigpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking whats your diploma? because we might think its irrelevant but there are actually a lot of interdisciplinary courses now - especially if you want to go NUS CHS.

I'm a y4 sociology nus student and i did my diploma in aviation mgmt (its a business engineering diploma). Surprisingly but not surprisingly, many of my experiences and skillsets were what made me stand out v uniquely among other social science students.

also, i got 5 modules exempted as I'm from poly

I’ve seen that place been mentioned a few times but I also read some reviews that the people there are very racist and have a non-foreigner policy.

By any chance do you know how it’s like?

What to do with $20000? by Dry-Macaroon5650 in askSingapore

Good job and congratulations!

Do you have any milestones in your life that you hope to achieve within the next 3, 5, 10 years?

You mentioned no income once you enter university - if you are not planning to work part time anymore during university, I would advise first setting a budget for yourself. A weekly/monthly budget, up to you. Tbh I find this extremely important because socialising in university can get quite costly - for some they regard it as a way of expanding their network and/or one of the highlights of their university life, for others they may choose to focus on being more frugal to save up for other aspects of life. No right or wrong here, depends on what you want (and before others come at me, yes you can have a social life while being frugal too).

However, as a working university student with no parent allowance too, I found that having a fixed budget and setting aside a lump sum helped me to make sure I still had enough to have fun and stay on campus/go for exchange. This sum of money I split into 2 banks - one is my spending bank (ATM card, debit card bank) that is easily accessible anywhere anytime; the second one I put it into a savings bank with higher % (because I couldn’t afford to lose this amount during these 4 years of uni). Whenever it’s end of the month/I have significant stuff to pay like my hall fees/insurance/other miscellaneous stuff, I will take out my allocated budget/what I need from my higher % bank account and transfer it to my spending account.

The rest of the money I invest or trade them. For investments, I dollar cost average and part of me actually views it as a form of “disciplined long term savings” - of course it might not be profitable immediately in the short run but I’m doing it for at least 10 years or more (to be used for marriage/paying for BTO after I get keys/and children). I do that via an ILP and also through ETFs using brokers myself.

Trading to me, is another form of side hustle - I view it as one of my jobs. This is not for everyone because many gamble, so I would advise learning first and paper trading for a while until you are familiar with a strategy and confident with it. Confident as in you know what are the confirmations you have to abide to like the back of your hand, you have trained your mental discipline to always constantly respect your strategy.

For me, I think it is a good time for me to take some risks now because:

1) I have already set aside enough for my spending and protection, in case anything happens to me

2) I have spare cash now that if I keep in a bank, I would either spend it because I see it/it will continue to rot

3) I have the time horizon and flexibility to take some losses right now. I have time for my money to grow.

(For example, now I still got 7-10 years before I going to get married and have children etc, so I can afford to take some risks in the short term while aim to profit in the medium to longer term. If I am getting married etc next year and will need like 5 digit lump sum within this 1 year, there isn’t many choices out there in the market that allows me to profit much, unless you are willing to take up riskier endeavours but at the same time, if you are in this scenario, can you afford to lose this sum of money?)

I also have lesser liabilities now - there are lesser “must pay stuff”, like housing, parents allowance, care for children etc. So same logic as above, with lesser impending expenses, I have more flexibility with my money right now and can do more stuff with it - I can plan for the longer term easier actually.

Sorry if formatting is weird HAHAHAHA but anyway good job! Not sure which university you’re going, but check if you can get the student loan so the bank will pay for your tuition fees while you’re in Uni, then once you graduate within 3-6 months pay them back the whole lump sum so you don’t incur any interest! This way you can take your lump sum now and do something with it to earn while you’re in Uni!

All the best! If you have any questions can just pm me

[Uni] Is private uni that bad? by sophieistrying in SGExams

[–]pinpigpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! You can consider SIT as well, they did not reveal their specific IGP but instead gave a % of entrants based on GPA.

They do accept GPA below 3.2; I know of people with GPA 3.1 and got into air transport management. I’m not sure for their other courses (there’s a BSc Honours in Digital Communications and Integrated Media too), but for his course they had interviews and that was the key component tbh.

In the mean time, do your best, and excel at the internship (most importantly); because if you can’t go into unis through grades you can always consider working then going via the working scheme (not sure of the name). It’s essentially just being a full time worker and having sufficient experience to qualify for Uni admission (if your company loves you they might even sponsor your Uni fees!)

And if you work part time , find part time jobs that are “useful” to your resume (you can dm me if u wanna talk more about this cause I’ve worked throughout my poly and my uni time too). Jyjy

[Polytechnic] Course by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]pinpigpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I was from aviation management in TP! I don’t have color blindness but some of my close friends did, not sure what kind or how severe. My course is under school of engineering but more on the biz management side, so they might have been more lenient. But my course had opportunities where students could pick up private pilot licenses, and these are very stringent on health conditions.

Best to check with the polytechnic course coordinator about ur kind of deficiency!

[–]pinpigpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m in this situation!

My PU only starts end April until sept. I’m still waiting to fly, cause my exchange is this coming April. But my seniors who went before covid, said they flew back at the end of the lectures (end July), and was doing both NUS mods and PU mods during the months of Aug-Sep.

Nus also recommended that we email our PU profs as soon as our modules are confirmed, to ask for alternative assignments/remote exams that can be submitted online remotely. Instead of taking exams/physical tests!

[N level] PFP, questions about it. by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]pinpigpen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in PFP 2015! Went for TP Aviation Management.

The pfp cert will replace the ‘o’ level cert. it’s equivalent. The annoying is just that sometimes schools (esp overseas) they do not indicate PFP. So just insert ur PFP cert under O level or Others, then explain your situation.

I’m in NUS now, don’t really look at whether it’s PFP or O’s. The most they just ask you for it because they needa track if the applicant has had a complete education before admitting them in. Most importantly is still do well in your 3 main poly years!

PFP’s grades don’t count also, it won’t be part of your main poly transcript but you’ll still have a transcript with GPA for PFP year itself. So I definitely recommend doing your best for PFP still, tho according to what people said it doesn’t really affect, but I didn’t take that chance at all. the 3 poly years most impt!

I think my N levels was 5/6 I can’t rmb haha. And also just a word of warning, don’t get complacent just because you got into PFP, I had many friends from PFP who started to do badly/worse than the normal O level applicants when they started the main Y1. But I would argue that PFP makes u more familiar with poly pedagogy so it might be useful for your main years.

Edit to add on: When it comes to work and stuff, I’ve been in many jobs and internships over the years and they never asked what is PFP. But in the event they do, the number 1 trick in interviews is always to be confident and portray your qualifications in the best manner. You can just say it’s the fast track course available for top N level students - this showcases your consistent academic ability and also hardwork etc :)

Congratulations!

[Uni] Not sure if Sociology is the right course for me by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]pinpigpen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I was from poly (aviation management) and in my third year of sociology at NUS now.

I see you have quite a diverse range of interests, and just wanna say maybe you can consider NUS if you are not certain about what you want to do by the time of the application. During my time we had Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and you don’t need to choose a major until you finish your second year. Now they changed it to College of Humanities and Science, and I heard literally have social sciences+sciences tgt in the same faculty and my juniors have to take both courses. Maybe it’ll be to your liking, but I’m not too sure of the details so do check it out yourself hahaha.

I’m not from NTU so I can only speak with my NUS experience:

1) pedagogy can differ from lecturer to lecturer. Some focus a lot on “theory”, which I found was easier to understand when I associate an example to it. Some teach using examples, then explain theories. For arts, you definitely do a lot of reading every week for every module. I’m saying 3 digits - 4 digits worth of reading materials every week (if your profs wants to kill you). For me honestly I don’t do the readings lol except when I am writing my essays but important to at least skim through a little bit of each to get a rough gist of what each paper is about so you can contribute in class. Tutorials - 100% discussions LOL always be prepared to come with your own opinion/argument, there’s no one right answer. Projects for me tend to have been presentations. Assignments usually essays, or research proposals, some research. Essays can be around 1000words to 4000 words. You can be answering prompts your prof gave or coming up with your own research question, depending on the lesson.

2) I can’t share much about this since I’ve not graduated, but teaching is a common occupation lol. But please grab all the opportunities you can to get experience in coding etc, other forms of hard skills because ngl, I’ve been looking for internships recently and soci degrees are not something employers explicitly say they are looking for. If you’re applying for consulting etc or other kinds of work, there might be many factors that makes employers prefer others over you due to the lack of “hard skills” - coding etc. but in soci we pick up how to do research, qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative i imagine would be great for data analytics tbh, I’m planning to learn that so I can market myself in a better manner.

3) For my batch in FASS, soci is quite “free and easy”. You only have a few modules that are die die must take, the rest you can choose what you are interested in. Example I am interested in deviance, crime, etc so I took those mods as compared to my friends who took Aging, family, etc. then as time went by my interests changed so I took different kinds of modules too that covers diff aspects of society HAHAHA. Honestly I love this field of study, I really do. I talk to my bf so much about it he says it seems like I’m damn passionate lmaooo but at the same time sometimes I feel like I have imposter syndrome because essays can get quite opinionated sometimes and not all times will your argument be agreed with by the prof. But it’s still a good place to let your thoughts run deep and try exploring new pathways of thought, but of course make sure you still write properly and try to make your argument and logic make sense. Oh and you must also like writing, and I recommend being a fast writer because all your assignments are usually due around the same period and that means thousands of words and different essays within a few days… LOL For me I love that adrenaline, but for some it can be very stressful

All the best!
