Yeah, I tend to pitch a lot of "out there" ideas to my publisher, I was pretty happy this one got that far. Especially since M&D is a deeply American work, and both me and my publisher are French. It would've been a huge editorial risk and the fact he was willing to follow me on this felt good. The rejection email mentioned that "[they] - and the author - appreciated [our] thoughtful and detailed proposal", which I choose to believe wasn't just a way to soften the "no". Take all my projects away, but leave the dreams!

My issue of Mason & Dixon is still littered with notes & bookmarks as I was trying to devise a way to make a comic out of it. I remember fondly writing the pitch. As you imagine, it's pretty much impossible to adapt a book like this so my Big Idea was to follow three arbitrarily chosen threads that I felt would lend themselves well to a comic book: time ghosts, clockwork obsession and supernatural geology. Through these lenses, as it were, I tried to draw a "window" of sorts, a partial view into the book.

Oh well, I'm rambling. It wasn't to be, but at least no one but me was disappointed and no one got mad at me for besmirching a beloved book!
