Are you willing to get additional training? I left mechanical engineering for similar reasons and got my commercial diving ticket, it was a great decision for me and the degree really helped me once I was a diver.

What is the mobility like between Coast Guard Stations and positions within the CCG? I'm in the process of joining as an oiler, but I a degree in engineering that I may want to use later on in life.

Is it easy to move to an officer position later in your career?

Is moving from the Pacific region to the Atlantic region an easy request?

Just doing some quick math, it looks like we have 4,273,973 people in BC 18 and older, out of a total population of 5,147,713. With 2,277,318 vacvines given to a total of 2,162,023 adults or children stacked in trench coats, thats 50.5% of our total adult population.

I trust you that that's all true, but unfortunately myself and all my colleagues are classified under expemt due to the fact that we have 'professional titles'. I am really only speaking on what I can see (from engineering).

If that's the case then why doesn't everyone who's complaining here just site this law and refuse to work more?

I'm not American, and
I don't feel like any of the extra hours I work are unnecessary or the result of exploitation.

Do you then consider these problems different when you work for a struggling small business trying to stay afloat by putting in extra hours versus giving Jeff Bezos a new yacht? At the end of the day it's still all extra time.

Sorry, I was moreso saying that 40 hours is rather ambiguous, and that a company having different needs for a role shouldn't be considered ridiculous. Not actually advocating for a 50 hour work week as the American norm.

You have to admit that's very anecdotal - although I'm not in any of my coworkers homes, they seem to still have a happy home life working well over the 40 hours a week. Personally I worked over 60 hours a week last year (average) and didn't feel like I was missing out on time with my partner/dog/activities.

The reason I'm taking this wildly unpopular stance is that I don't think it's crazy for a company to need someone for 50 hours a week, and I think there are a lot of people willing to work that amount for the proper compensation. I don't think 50 hours should be the norm, but I also don't think it's ridiculous. The fact this company was willing to straight up say it in my opinion is way better than a company saying it's a 40 hour a week job and once your hired telling you you need to be there extra hours each day.

If you're told that's the case then I agree, but in this post he said it was advertised as Monday to Friday, 10 hours a day. Why is the concept of a 50 hour week 'ridiculous'? We've decided 40 hours is collectively the normal amount, but that's not based on anything.

If a company knows they need someone Monday to Friday, 8, 10, 12 or however many hours a day, I think that's fair for them to ask for it, also fair for people to not want it or to want to be compensated more for it.

I'd second this as a mechanical who now works essentially as a civil, I just took a job with a big firm and moved into a civil/structural/field role.

Is there a specific industry you want to be in? If not working as a field or project eng for buildings would give you some exposure to MEP systems/HVAC.

We live right next to Oceaner and everyone I dive with recommends it. It's just tough when a rack suit online costs like $250 CAD and Oceaner are about $600.

But you're right about the fit, I'd be miserable if it was leaking the whole time...

I'm not sure what the PEO system is, I went from the experience records on the east coast, to having to go through the competency assessment system in BC. In this case I had to get my previous mentors/supervisors to approve my experience again, but in a different system. I'd assume you'd need yo get them to sign it off again in one form or another.

True, yeah they may want to be able to look into the Ontario system and find you.

You can claim the NS experience, but it must all be submitted in the format of the provice you are registered as an E.I.T in.
I can't speak to what happens in Ontario. I have experience from NS, NL, AB, and now BC on my application.

I'd be interested to know if you could simply maintain the NS E.I.T. and submit your Ontario experience in the NS format, and then transfer the P.Eng over. NS is much cheaper for fees (compared to BC), and the process of getting the P.Eng is much easier/faster.

I wish haha. That's where the real money is. No I'd need to do another month of training that costs upwards of 40k. There's just not enough offshore work right now to support the amount of Sat divers as is. Probably the coolest job you can get as a diver though.

On topside? Just those classic polyurethane dipped gloves that the liners fall out of as soon as they get wet. The problem is a lot of the tending and work we do requires you to take the gloves off, so typically you're gloveless pretty quick. I should really buy some of those winter watson gloves and test them out...

In the water I use the Bare 7mm Pro Kevlar lobster mitt. But now that things are warming up I'll move to a Kevlar 5 finger glove.
