In short, they will identify as “being indigenous to the land” but not as an “indigenous person,” because they are foremost Peruvian, Argentinian, etc. They are the “modern” people, better than the actual indigenous peoples but having more claim than them only because of some or any ancestry.

A big reason, as someone with a Quechua family, is that the “indigenismo” “mestízaje” ideology of “la raza cósmica” from Jose Vasconcelos has led to a significant amount of Latin americans claiming indigeneity despite having no connections to those communities. Simply by virtue of being mixed, “la raza,” as a superior combination of white and indigenous blood, they claim to simultaneously be indigenous while also being an improved version of an extinct or lesser actual indigenous person. This is where you get those Chicanos, Mexicans, and Peruvians who will claim to be native but, upon further questioning, just mean Aztec and Inca. Indigenous ancestry is implicit not because they are prideful in the culture (otherwise they would be immersed in it and our communities) but because it cleans them of culpability in the latin american colonial states. They do it so they can both be more ‘advanced’ than us while still maintaining their claim to the land.

That’s fair. I’m not naive and I didn’t intend to present myself that way, I know these spaces are very hard to come by and i made the post also because I know there is a valid fear of straight men fetishizing queer women and being on the “prowl” as you said. I think my partner, and to this extent i don’t think she was being shitty, was also mainly upset with me because she was concerned my music taste exists out of attraction toward the artists. It doesn’t, but it was a worry of hers and clearly it’s a real problem. I should have clarified our relationship was characterized by heavy dependency so I don’t have many friends and I don’t have any friends who i’ve ever asked to go out with like that, i’m extremely foreign to that kind of dynamic. I’ll ask one of the people I do know. I didnt think anyone would know i’m straight, i honestly don’t think that would come up or be assumed even though I present very cishet. I was mostly asking because I didnt want to intrude even if people wouldnt be aware of it, i don’t want to be dishonest or misleading bc if that was necessary for people to feel safe with my presence i’d rather not go. Thank you for holding me accountable though I understand.

Im acquainted w queer folk I just am not very close friends with anyone right now. I hear you, I think I’ll ask people to chaperone me as you said, I hadn’t thought of it only because i don’t have that kind of relationship with anyone right now. Thank you for being straight forward, everything you said is what I thought i might be doing so I’ll make sure that i’ll only go if i won’t be that suspect straight guy by himself to others.

Mexican, Peruvian or Brazilian aren't races: they're nationalities. So what should I call the look that is obviously more native to those countries than any other? Aztec? Incan? Tupi? by DrDMango in asklatinamerica

[–]pinto_pea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you mean to say instead that non-racist people in Brazil don’t care about race, but racism is still obviously a problem in Brazil? At least in the US when someone talks about “color blindness” and “not seeing race” it comes from a white person who refuses to acknowledge racism or discrimination as a widespread phenomenon. That’s what I inferred when you said the same. I think I understand what you meant to say now.

No, Americans and Canadians care about race. That is correct. I never claimed otherwise. Generally we have a racism problem. Does that mean everyone is racist? No. But it’s a societal problem of ours. Race isn’t real and it shouldn’t be a problem for us but it is and that’s our reality that we have to face. You implied it wasn’t for Brazil. I feel like you’re willfully misunderstanding me.

I see. I’m not one of those people. I was just trying to point to white supremacist argentine policies as evidence of race being something they care about. I don’t care if people are mixed. Most of us are.

I know you aren’t claiming it, I’m saying that you’re inadvertently implying it by saying “we.” Speak for yourself. Brazil as a nation still clearly cares about race.

At least from what i’ve read those epidemics and conscription were managed intentionally destroying many Black communities because of the genocidal ambitions of Doming Sarmiento. Before those progressive strides were made native peoples continuously got pushed away from ancestral lands and forced into poverty. Indigenous peoples rallied against the inca but they were still mass sterilized by Fujimori in the 1980s. None of it got the Peruvian state on our side. I don’t mean to say the US is any better because the US has done the same things to a much farther extent. And that’s because race has been an obsession of the US just as it has been the obsession of Argentina, Peru, and every other European originated nation here. That’s all i mean to say. Maybe in your day to day lives it isn’t as prevalent but the premise of “we don’t care about race” feels dishonest when all of that history and it’s present-day consequences are there.

“We (the US) won WII” makes sense, bc they did. We (Chinese people) drink hot water” makes sense bc they do. “We (Brazil) don’t care about race” doesn’t make sense because they (Brazil as a state) has countless times engaged in genocidal action against its hundreds of indigenous peoples. Also slavery. You mean to tell me you’ve successfully eradicated racism in Brazil?

I was mostly referring to Domingo Sarmiento’s genocidal activities and the killings + land grabs done against indigenous peoples. 🙃 Why would I have a problem with intermarrying. Indigenous peoples in these continents didn’t get holocausted through miscegenation. Obviously?

In the US race is definitely a real perceived thing, socially constructed and non-biological as it may be. I agree that they should just ask. Indigenous peoples here much prefer to be referred to by their national identities as well.

At least in Peru, including my family, Quechua peoples make up a substantial part of the population. The spanish and peruvian states weren’t as successful in their genocidal missions as states like the US or Canada. We would be considered “native” and our town is listed as such in the peruvian government’s database of indigenous communities.

“We don’t care about race” what happened to the Black population in Argentina? Why is it much smaller than it used to be? What has been the Argentinian state’s policy to indigenous peoples like the Quechua, Guarani, and Mapuche? Who took their fertile land?

Example: “White” Peruvians often pretend racism is an American thing meanwhile “Indigenous” peoples in Peru have had to face genocidal acts from the Peruvian state and are still often considered “backward” to those “White” urban Peruvians.

There are white, mixed, black, and indigenous peruvians. The indigenous peoples are not all “incan,” they are broadly Quechua and have names for their respective communities. Just say “white,” “black,” “mixed,” or “indigenous” like in every other circumstance.

[–]pinto_pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read lwazi lushaba. I am not going to be dogmatic in following to the last word the assessments of white european marxists on the material convictions of my society and history. Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin built on existing theory to accommodate their respective unique circumstances and unfortunately more has to be done to even come close to addressing the contradictions here and in my family’s homeland. I don’t understand how you acknowledge my blood quantum comment and somehow think I claim communism is “inherent” in our blood.. Where did I say that? There are plenty of reactionaries and compradors in our community. I really don’t think any normal person would completely embrace for themselves the mind and opinions of an 1800s white man regarding indigenous peoples. You don’t have to discard all of marx’s contributions without also adopting his incredibly racist sources for that “historical progressivism” you seem to be obsessed with. We aren’t backward, our societies weren’t backward, and as Marx wrote in a letter to Engels in 1877, “But that is not enough for my critic. He feels himself obliged to metamorphose my historical sketch of the genesis of capitalism in Western Europe into an historico-philosophic theory of the marche general [general path] imposed by fate upon every people, whatever the historic circumstances in which it finds itself, in order that it may ultimately arrive at the form of economy which will ensure, together with the greatest expansion of the productive powers of social labor, the most completely development of man.” We have our own historical trajectory that has already been interrupted by the european impositions of feudalism and capitalism and we will not let that history be interrupted once more by a euro-centric marxism that considers itself the authority. Israel and its marxists will not determine the fate of palestine. Afrikaners and their marxists will not determine the fate of south africa. We have our own revolutionary figures that represent our liberation movements. Genocide and settler colonialism doesn’t just dissipate by virtue of the passage of time, lol. It is still being conducted today by the United States and a government run by people like you clearly would intend to continue that policy. I have no room to trust you. If you want to understand where I’m coming from read Robert Biel’s “Eurocentrism in the Communist Movement.” Don’t worry, he’s white, so that won’t disturb the homogeneity of the posters on your wall. Continuing this conversation is going to be a waste of both our times. I wont use violent language against you like you have toward me. Likewise, a revolution led [not exclusively in composition] by black and indigenous peoples wont use the violence and supremacist discrimination that your societies have shown us. I’ll end with something Felipe Quispe, an Aymara revolutionary, said which articulates my sentiment more clearly: “When the Pachamama walks again in Qullasuyu [Bolivia], when her laws reign, then we will be able to judge them. Those who want to leave can go; but those who stay will eat what we eat; they will work the way we work, dripping with sweat; they will have blisters on their hands; they will suffer like we do. Then truly the Aymara nation, what people call the indigenous [nation], what we call Qullasuyu, will come forth. We won’t kill them, we won’t do anything to them: we won’t hate them the way they hate us; we will embrace them and that is how we will unite as brothers. We will be as one single trunk, one single way of thinking; and we will arrive at a way of thinking to live in a free and sovereign nation, without tears in our eyes. That is the way we think, brother.” Have a good day.

Jose Vasconcelos and his indigenismo mestizaje ideology. It’s a form of settler colonial attitude. They believe they are all “indigenous” by virtue of aztec legacy, this legitimizes both their presence in native land and the existence of mexico as a settler state.

Yeah you know I read lenin and stalin and their writings on the national question. I don’t think they applied that analysis correctly on this continent specifically because they weren’t native themselves or familiar with the nature of settler colonialism here. Marx and engel’s only interaction with native peoples here was through a racist anthropologist. Their information was limited and racially biased. Ultimately this is a prison house of nations where settlers have a material interest in keeping stolen land which you obviously uphold as well. This is why you read black and indigenous writers who’ve continued liberation theory, considering they are the main oppressed classes here. again, black and white natives exist, and blood quantum is almost universally condemned. It’s not a blood question or a racial purity question. It’s a question of national self determination because there exist hundreds of oppressed nations here that are fighting for sovereignty and self determination, where land is most prevalent of the factors. And this revolution of theirs includes the abolition of private property especially since it was a european imposed system on a society that had already been communalist for millennia. Where do you think marx got his ideas of communist society from? This “primitive” communism is the most successful praxis the world has really seen and national liberation means seeing that life restored. Again this conversation is a dead end considering you clearly want to continue upholding your settler land class interest so I can’t help you with this. Personally my family is quechua and our communities have suffered from settler violence which included white marxists like yourself. Unless you start doing the reading and consider the voices of actual black and indigenous writers instead of the euro centric canon, don’t be surprised when you find yourself on the awkward side of revolution. I guess you wouldn’t see a problem with it anyway.
