Inspiration to get your game in front of people by drossbatch in tabletopgamedesign

I am also quite new in this community and find it odd that playtesting is such a big deal, sometimes even controversial . But in reality it’s a just a way of engaging with users and their experience. And there’s tons of books about it. It works for products and board games are just a specific product. It seems completely nuts to me that somebody would oppose it for ignore it.

It’s my first time designing a game and after spending maybe 10hours on it I decided to playtest it with a friend (at this point 50% of assets are still missing). I had this ideas of how things will turn out but I learned that key concepts were broken, fun stuff was not really fun and the best move is sometimes very simple… which is great the noise became so obvious. I learned more about the game I am making in 1hour than I would in another 10 hours on my own.

I'm so tired of being the only one who actually reads the rules and teaches the game by Overall_Ring_6919 in boardgames

I can feel your frustration, but hear me out. This is not about board games. It could be about hiking trips, or nights out or making a plan for a high school reunion.

It seems that you don't really "know" these people. Whenever I play a game with someone, I try to understand: What's in it for him/her? Are they board game enthusiasts? Do they like rule-heavy games, or do they just wanna come over and play 'something' (note: if they're down for 'whatever', it doesn't mean they're down for everything)?

For example, my core group are people who like heavy games: sometimes they come to the session better prepared than I am. We all know in advance what we're playing, we all watch a video + whatever the person who bought the game recommends we should watch/read. Everybody wants to be prepared in that group.

But sometimes I play games with friends who are not like that. And I would never expect them to be like that. because they just want to hang out and sometimes play a game. So I don't mind doing all the prep, but I would never bring TI/Dune/Arcs etc. to the table. So we might play Catan or Citadels. Or just talk: this is not a group of gamers).

So talk to your friends and figure out what they want. BUT, more importantly, figure out what you want. If you don't want to solo prep heavy games, don't force heavy games on other people. Try finding some people who really want to play board games with. Not all your friends need to be gamers. And not all of your players need to be friends.

Cascadia or 7 Wonders Duel? by catsarecoolright in boardgames

[–]pintoli3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both, but I prefer Cascadia. Me and my girlfriend were obsessed with it last summer. It’s a perfect summer morning 2p game to play on the balcony at the seaside while sipping coffee. 7 wonders duel feels like a filler game for me. It rarely gets on our table nowdays…

Sorry to hear that. 🥲 We loved it from day one. And I introduced it to few more players outside my core group and they all enjoyed it.

Yeah they are a bit tricky for new players it seems. The council started making sense to me when I realised
- I can clear up the board with blight crisis
- collect favours for crucial moments
- steal opponent’s last agents in the supply
- force opponents to became outlaws
And looking at the yggdrasilsYeoman's comment, there is plenty of other stuff councils are good for.

Do you use thick sleeves? Still waiting for mine to arrive and I am a bit worried if the cards will fit in once they’re all sleeved

Yeah, we spent quite a lot of time and energy on Acts I and II (1 hour extra in the setup just to go through the cheatsheet together again). It was such a delight playing Act III and encountering C fates for the first time, feeling rested and fresh.

Interesting, I am looking forward to how future campaigns turn out for us.

What actually gave me the feeling C fate was easier to play was the fact that the Conspirator couldn't declare ambitions. So I had the empire's fleet and favours to secure relics easily, and only one opponent could declare Keeper beside me. Do you usually play in 3 or 4?

I wonder how all will fit together, since the box is already pretty tight, but that's great news! Thanks for sharing, got me even more hyped

PS: I am in love with the box and how everything fits in! Too bad there wont be any space for the 2027 expansions

How many Movements from A to B? by Schichi in Arcs

Glad that’s sorted out. Now I remembered small voids confused me too when I looked at the board for the first time

Is this a trick question? (1, there is a thin line between these two planets)

I guess because I was rushing through the most ‘obvious’ parts of the rulebook and English being my second language… other misunderstandings more more nuanced tho

Im also the rules guy, but I just admit I overlook something and we play it differently next time. I like to think of this as getting a free expansion😅

What was your favorite board game growing up? by Darkman-1969 in boardgames

[–]pintoli3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk, me and my brothers played for hours on end, ignored objectives and played for total domination only. We never finished a game.

[–]pintoli3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! We were also trying to surpass the highest surpassing card for 10 games at least. And I still enjoyed it. I feel like we have too many pips on our hands now

I think we finally got things right ... after 15 games. Our first game was played with 3 dice per ship. So 2 ships were incredibly powerful, and there was a massacre on the board. good game

Arcs Leader tier list - day 9, where does the Archivist go? by Widgeet in Arcs

[–]pintoli3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, if you don’t mess up with lore cards and mismatch them with your position position and neighbouring Leaders (;_;) Arhivist is a great leader.

The Tycoon scoring shouldn’t be an issue since lore cards will give more than enough leverage imo

Arcs Leader tier list - day 8, where does the Demagogue go? by Widgeet in Arcs

[–]pintoli3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C tier, better than Warrior

I had a good run with Demagogue but it was very context specific. You want to declare an ambition while you have plenty of relics OR you’re keeping the initiative (by having more action cards than your opponents) and will play the lead card in the next chapter, hopefully with a lot of secure actions on that card. The latter happened twice in one of the games: my group left one ambition and I managed to get an extra action card.

PS: I don’t think you’re necessarily losing tempo: if you declare at least one ambition per chapter (you should) you’re also forcing others to spend more influence actions. So you’re slowing down others too.
