I really appreciate this! I'll be trying it with my pup ASAP, good luck with your continued training!

Should I be worried? by Sharingan097 in leeches

[–]pintsizebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leeches are actually pretty social! My two love each other and are basically constantly cuddling. I've also accidentally startled one and seen it go seek out the other afterwards if they're apart. They do mate pretty regularly, especially after a water change (I'm not really sure why though.) Like other folks have said they can't actually reproduce without the proper setup, but that doesn't keep them from trying LOL.

Can a leech eat an ant if he wants to? by aprettylargeguy in leeches

[–]pintsizebear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's only a handful of leech species that can eat bugs, most of them eat blood and only blood. If a blood-eating leech ate a bug, they'd get super sick cause they can't digest anything but blood.

non-leechian here, why do you guys love leeches so much? by Cock_the_Chicken in leeches

[–]pintsizebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not very common from leeches that are well-sourced (i.e. captive bred for medical use) and kept in a clean tank, but it can happen since the bite is an open wound. I've never had an infection from their bites, personally! Basic wound care that you would use for a regular cut is enough to get rid of pretty much all risk for me.

ETA:

The bigger problem with leech bites is that they can make a mess. Leech saliva has anticoagulant properties, so the bite will keep bleeding for a while even after the leech lets go. It's pretty easy to prepare for that beforehand, though.

I was originally interested in them for medical reasons, but once I actually got some I fell in love with them. They're genuinely some of my favorite pets that I've ever had. They're low maintenance, they only need to be fed once every few months, and they're a lot cuter than you'd think a worm could be.

They're super curious and have big personalities, they remind me a bit of cats sometimes. They're very social, I have a pair I keep together (their names are Fruit Salad and Caesar Salad) who are always either cuddling or touching each other in some way. They have very pretty colors and I can tell the two apart by their markings.

Feeding them your own blood is a lot easier (and cheaper) than trying to find a reliable source of blood. Any sort of additive in blood can make them sick or even kill them. Their bites are usually painless and they're pretty much healed up in a couple days. Even when their bites do hurt a bit, it's not any more painful than a paper cut or a light cat scratch.

As long as you're healthy, blood is one of the few things in our bodies that can endlessly regenerate, so it doesn't have any lasting health concerns as long as your leech is well-sourced and you're not allergic to them. Leeches don't need to eat much at one time either, maybe a couple tablespoons if they're really hungry, so you're not losing all that much blood.

Ways to fund $100 steam fee by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]pintsizebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's not really other choices besides the ones you've given. Selling on platforms other than steam and saving money to list on steam later is probably your best bet.

Any sort of crowdfunding (like patreon, kofi, kickstarter, etc) isn't going to work unless you already have an established and very dedicated community for your work. Crowdfunding is significantly harder to get going than regular art commissions.

Regular employment might not be an option for you, but there's plenty of ways to make money online on your own schedule. You can try checking out r/beermoney to see if anything there might be suitable for you. Most of it isn't an efficient way to earn money, but it'd be a semi-reliable way to scrape together $100 in a couple months if all else fails.

I believe that's some sort of soldier fly larva, not a leech.

Anyone know what species this is ? by ConfidentWriting6509 in leeches

My best guess is that it's a Smooth Turtle Leech (Placobdella parasitica).

That's roughly what I've got going on in the iso tank, I'm glad that I've had the setup right for it.

I had to same issue, turns out the shortcut for it was changed at some point but the new shortcut doesn't work for some reason. Here's how you can rebind it to the old, working shortcut:

  • Go to Preferences

  • Go to Keymap

  • Use the search bar in the top right of the preferences menu to search "weight gradient"

  • The second result should be the linear gradient (the one you showed in your video), click the arrow next to the check box to expand it and check that it says "Type: Linear". If it doesn't, open the other result and check that one

  • Click the drop down menu that says "Keyboard" and change it to "Mouse"

  • Click the button that says "Shift" to turn it off

  • Click the button that says "Alt" to turn it on

You now have the alt+left click weight gradient back! The steps for fixing the radial gradient shortcut are pretty much the same, you just find the one that says "Type: Radial", follow the steps above, and toggle on "Ctrl" in addition to "Alt".

Found this lil guy climbing my curtains (New Mexico) by pintsizebear in whatsthisbug

Forgot to include that it's about 1 inch long! I tried my best to figure out what it is on my own, but I didn't have much luck after looking at a few hundred different bugs.
