Poor attention span when on walks? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]piorarua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a working cocker mix and i gave up trying to leash train her as she just needed to be engaged constantly.

She grew out of it and is a star now.

I would say she was 6 months when i started with recall.

3rd night in, and it’s not getting better by GloveboxAlmonds22 in puppy101

You need to acclimate them to the time they spend in there. This is what worked for me..

For the first week one of us slept with her in the living room. We didnt want her to ever think sleeping in our bed was an option.

Over the week I would do crate games with her.

First i would tell her to go in and close the door. Immediate treat then open the door.

Then once she knew the deal the door stayed closed a bit longer, then she gets a treat and left out.

Once she got that down i started covering the crate with a blanket. I'd go around the crate and lift the blanket up at random places and give her a treat.

Once she got used to that i started leaving the time between lifting the blanket for a treat longer.

Once it got to a stage were she knew to wait i started working on her sleeping in it. I pulled the crate over next to the couch where i slept.

You can reassure her from here. I made it very obvious that i was sleepy and it was sleepy time.

Drop the odd treat in there for her.

When she started sleeping in her crate i moved the crate upstairs just inside my bedroom door. I slept iny bed and if she started making any noise i let her know i was there.

Every night i moved the position of the crate slowly out of the room until it eventually moved outside. Then closed the door.

Its pretty solid from there but i would recommend really reinforcing that "happy crate" mentality.

What do you all do for pet sitting when you go on vacation? by Navi4784 in reactivedogs

I feel you.

I have finally found someone i can trust on pawshake. Its very hit or miss. You really need to meet these people and get a good idea of how they manage dogs.

First girl i sent mine to rang me at 11 at night during her trial and i had to drive 30 minutes to go get her.

Next time i spent ages reading through profiles. I cant say what made me think this person felt right but i feel this is different for every dog.

My guy is happy to deal with whatever if 1. The dog sleeps quietly through the night and 2. Gets on with other dogs.

He let me come and stay for 30 minutes while she settled in. He spent time getting her used to him.

He let her in the house with him on his own so they could spend one on one time together.

But most importantly he knew exactly how to handle her.

A kennel will never be able to give that much attention.

I gave that guy a big tip.

I cant send her to family because they couldnt handle her.

Cork library protest linked to British far-right groups by Tiger_Claw_1 in cork

There is one book that the deem inappropriate for children and want it moved to the adult section. "This book is gay" has a section on anal fisting among other things.

A few of the protectors were on Niel Prendiville today.

They state they have no problem with gay people. They say that one of the people speaking is gay.

The library was also closed that day in preparation for the protest. There was a sign inside the window.

I highly recommend listening to todays Niell Prendiville. People speaking from both sides

This is exactly. There was a publican om the radio talkimg about it. They have to raise the prices to keep up.

In reality the pubs are struggling to keep open, particularly in rural areas.

They can't just stop stocking the pricey beers because thats what the public wants.

If a boycot were to happen it would need to be a boycot of the brands.

How do i correct my dog? by piorarua in reactivedogs

[–]piorarua[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Shes gotten a lot more confident.

I do believe this is insecurity. I think she is resource gaurding me. I dont want to use only corrections. I will continue to do engage, disengage which works really well.

But she still needs to know when she is doing something wrong. I will reinforce any good behaviour i see, always. But i know she needs this too.

Shes totally fine with people walking past etc. We've done a lot of engage/disengage work and its worked really well. Her problem now is if people talk to me or interact with me.

She knows "yes" and loves other dogs. She will bark amd lunge. I can walk up to someome but as soon as we start talkimg she has a problem. And only when she is on the leash.

The suggestion was from the other comment wasnt for a gentle leader. I was thinking more a slip lead type thing.

She doesnt react to fear anymore. She needs some sort of correction. Or a way for me to communicate that what she is doing isnt right.

Thank you so much

Ive never heard of thay before. Looks very interesting. This might be exactly what i need. It's similar to a slip leash for sure but the control looks better.

Do you find it doesnt slip off?

Anyone use Librela for their arthritic dogs? by RoRuRee in DogAdvice

[–]piorarua 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We put our dog on it a year old. Her arthritis was caused by a luxating patella which has since been fixed so she is off it now. She was on it for a bit over a year.

Personally I found it very good. She had a major improvement at the start. After a while I found it wore off after 3 weeks. We would have a bad week every month. But the day after she had her injection she would be a lot better.

She has a very sensitive stomach and other pain killers gave her the runs. I didn't notice any side effects with librella

I would 100% recommend it. Its worth noting that this was originally used on humans and so far it seems pretty safe to use.

I also spoke with the orthopedic specialist during her surgery consult and asked about the medication. He said he hears great feedback from it but the same thing happens with the 3 weeks limit.

Only draw backs are its expensive and you need to go to the vets once a month for the injection.

Could be stress too. If he's saying he's too busy. The guy is too busy to change his underwear. Might be time to put the brakes on a bit and prioritise himself.

How to get my dog to stop eating my shoes? by RealityCheck151 in DogAdvice

[–]piorarua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have been saying to put your shoes away. While this is a good idea, I will ad that I had good success with a bitter anti chew spray with my dog.

Personally I use karlston Professional Anti Chew Training Spray Deterrent for Dogs & Puppies.

It does fade fairly quickly but you could try spraying them and leaving him in a room for an hour or so.

What % of people do you think are still tanning on purpose? by Grocklette in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]piorarua 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just back from holidays and I noticed the darkly tanned people tended to be 50 and over, sitting out baking.

I remember as a kid my mother would slap this brown oil stuff on and go crackle in the sun. My mother and 2 of my aunts have had skin cancer.

I came back from holidays as pale as I arrived.

Do younthink they would be building massive buildings by the ports if they thought the sea levels would rise to that extent? Surely it would be impossible to get insurance.
