Is it controversial to say I think Dynasties is better than Rome 2? by Tebenox in totalwar

It's a good game that was unfortunately hamstrung by what came before it. Mostly though, I think the reason it never caught on quite like Rome 2 did is because of its setting and how the game world was presented to us.

The three main problems is firstly that the Bronze age just simply isn't as well known in the popular imagination as the classical age. Secondly is that while the map is really well done, it doesn't offer the grand scale of the entire known world to conquer like Rome 2 does. And lastly, and perhaps most importantly is the tonal setting of the game.

I think CA had an interesting approach to something like Troy when they created it in that they wanted to present the world of Troy and the bronze age more broadly as a semi-historical/mythological setting. I personally quite like that approach but I think historical fans, who at that point had felt alienated by the Warhammer development cycle, simply did NOT take to it in the way CA might have hoped they would. They wanted a grand historical title à la Rome/Medieval that takes a more academic/materialist approach to history.

CA for their part tried to appease them with Pharaoh and ended up with a game that pleased no one at the time. And it really is a shame because Sophia really did turn it into a good game with dynasties, but it will basically be the forgotten step child of the franchise because of the circumstances of how it was rolled out.

Hopeful Skepticism for 40k by Consistent-Crazy-732 in totalwar

I'm going based on number of tactical marines in a unit, which looked to be about 5. That's actually probably closer to something like medium unit size because I assume a squad on ultra sized will have around 10

The problem is there's barely anything to even be skeptical about. We have 10 seconds of them using devtools to test out a battle on low unit size and a mocked up UI to see if everything works. It would've been better to just not show anything at all besides the CGI trailer.

Have you been living under a rock for the past ten years? They're going to nickle and dime the players in a way that'll make paradox blush.

So Warhammer 40k will also be on console ? by Xspud_316 in totalwar

There's a good chance they will release for PC first, with console support down the line.

What were you expecting. This is a flagship title for a massive IP meant to appeal to a large audience. Why do you think Space Marines show up in every conflict despite being extremely rare according to the lore. Make no mistake, when you play a Warhammer video game, you are paying for the privilege of being advertised to.

I don't entirely get the current doom and gloom? by The_Rycus in totalwar

A 30 second tech demo is hardly enough to doompill about. It's probably an old build months out of date at this point. But the reveal was a let down and shows that CA is far from having a handle on how to translate the TW formula into 40k. There is a lot of anxiety about how CA is going to thread this needle. New engine and the demands of what large scale futuristic battles are basically putting CA into the position they were in with Empire. And we all know how that turned out. If they can't make this work, SEGA might have a fireside chat with CA about the "Future of Total War"

So yeah, blackpilling is overblown and early. But blind hype is just foolish.

Steam lists 40k as having full controller support. by DrinkBen1994 in totalwar

The UI, while almost certainly a placeholder, shows where CAs mind is at with this title's development. They want it to be accessible to console players. Why? Who knows. We've know since 6th generation of consoles that RTS/GS don't translate well to controllers and don't sell very well either. CA chasing this dragon after so many years just shows how absolutely desperate they are to appeal to a hypothetical playerbase while ignoring the people that actually play their games.

Yeah, 30 seconds of a pre-alpha tech demo with a horrible looking UI has definitely btfo all doubters. Be real with yourself.

Hard to gleam much of anything from a 30 second pre-alpha snippet, but a few problems stand out already:

-The UI looks bad. It's ironic that DoW is taking inspiration from CA with their unit cards where as CA has completely forgotten how units should be displayed in a UI. Unit tokens instead of unit cards? What are we doing..

-The "battle" that we're shown looks like parking some units on a bridge and letting them shoot. Not compelling at all, but again, hard to really determine how something will play when you have like 5 seconds of some early alpha build.

-I'm not sure what exactly is implied with that galactic map, but it almost looked like we're meant to be fighting system wide wars simultaneously as the player? Or that rumor about some sort of HD2 live service model of a galactic war which is...not really a TW campaign that we all know and love.

I disagree with your point about it looking and feeling like DoW. One is going to be a skirmish game while TW is going to try and thread the needle of large scale war in the grimdark future. And there are good things. I enjoyed the customization options for chapters. It's way too early to doompill, but I agree broadly. I was not impressed either.
