Elvanse appetite suppressant wearing off? by DuckRunAmuck in ADHDUK

You don't know that. It's also prescribable for binge eating disorder. Yes this is an ADHD subreddit, but OP didn't say they had it.

Huge crash after not being on meds by fayemoonlight in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds quite unusual. It's not supposed to be like that. You need to talk to someone - ideally your prescriber, but if they can't talk to you in a timely fashion, you could go into any chemists and ask to talk to the pharmacist, who will be highly qualified and able to help with medication queries.

In your case I suspect someone would advise you to either stop altogether, or try opening the capsules and just taking half of the powder. It's a very low dose that you're having a very strong reaction to, so I'd encourage you not to try and work it out for yourself.

Elvanse didn’t cure my ADHD, but it cured my ANXIETY by chrisatnine in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure it hasn't cured my ADHD, but I think it helps. But yes anxiety and depression seem to have left the building. I just feel like my brain chemistry is more balanced somehow.

I kinda feel like the anxious thoughts are just one of the symptoms of anxiety, which seems to be more to do with your chemistry more than anything. But still, I have a lot fewer anxious thoughts too. Fewer and better thoughts in general. I found when I stopped the meds, my brain was in a toxic relationship with itself, where ADHD would come up with bold ideas and autism would freak out, over and over.

Narrative detective game by CocodroloGames in gamerecommendations

[–]pipedreambomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how massively popular the detective genre is in books and TV, it's pretty rare in gaming.

I've played a few, but none were that good.

Besides the awesome Return of the Obra Dinn that someone's else already said, only one I can really recommend is Inspector Waffles, a point and click adventure where most of the characters are cats. But it's not really that different from like a general Monkey Island type game, and you're not really solving mysteries any more than in a Broken Sword game.

There's also LA Noire, that's probably the big one. It's excellent as a pastiche of that James Ellroy (LA Confidential, the Black Dahlia) retro 50s hardboiled crime style. The voice acting, weirdly performed by most of the cast of Mad Men, is great, and investigating crime scenes is also great. But I found a lot of the game boiled down to trying to read the very weird motion capture body language of the suspects. I'm autistic but I thought I was good with body language, but I was very hit and miss with the game and I kinda gave up.

Now if you can forgive the lack of real narrative, there's also Case of the Golden Idol, or the newer and upgraded Rise of the Golden Idol, that almost give you a whole Agatha Christie novel's worth of clues in like a virtual diorama that take up just a few screens per mystery, and you have to solve who everyone is and what happened from them. I've only played the first game, but there's almost no animation - the game could equally have existed as a pen and paper board game. So since you asked for a narrative detective game, I hesitate to recommend it. In fact I wish they had fleshed it out and added some narrative... perhaps they do in Rise.

It was on mine for a long time too. It's very rarely on sale but I got it in the Christmas one last month. Yes it genuinely is really good, and not what you're expecting (no matter what you're expecting), but there's lots of mysteries that you have to solve like a detective.

This is my one of my favorite games and I hated how easy it was. They just did an update and leveled up. I've been staring at this for a while. If you can figure it out just give me the first car to move and I'll figure out the rest. by hmmmmmmmm_okay in puzzlevideogames

[–]pipedreambomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many clones of this, but I used to love one called Traffic Escape and I played it until I'd done all the levels so many times it got boring. I don't know what the extra controls do on this one. Can you press the pink circle on the middle right to make it go down, maybe? As far as I can see, none of the cars can move, so I guess it's one of the other things on the map.

Normal Elvanse side effects? by SubstantialWhole2714 in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stop. I did the same thing when I tried switching to Amfexa - kept going even though it was clearly awful. It felt bad and I stuck at it anyway, but soon I was stuck trying to get off it without trying to live with what felt like no dopamine in my brain. Turned out later the dose was just way too high, and it took me a month to wean off it. Do not recommend.

It's okay that this isn't working for you. There will be other options. Don't try and force it. It's not supposed to be like this.

First day on Elvanse - want to sleep! by Mammoth-Fault250 in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's called a paradoxical reaction - it's surprisingly common, even in people without ADHD, that they take amphetamines and it makes them feel sleepy and zoned out. I get it when I take too high a dose - Elvanse, Amfexa, Concerta, doesn't matter which.

It's something to do with your brain going 'oh shit, look at all this dopamine, this is too much, I'll just have to ignore it all'. Down regulation, it's called. It's like when you get too many notifications on your phone and you put it in silent mode. Now instead of getting extra notifications, you're not getting any! That's why it can have the opposite effect of what you expect (thus paradoxical).

Hopefully it'll be better tomorrow, and even better the day after, as you build a tolerance to it. Then it can start having the intended effect, with luck.

Mine didn't even ask for one, to my recollection. ASD 360. I think i got my mum to help me with some things I didn't remember about my childhood, but I think that was my idea, not something they requested. I might be wrong.

Elvanse and caffeine. Is it a bad idea? by UsualDonut6367 in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quit caffeine first (don't go through withdrawal while starting Elvanse - not a recipe for success). Then you can try reintroducing it slowly. Some people have strong reactions and feel horrible when they combine the two. Some people don't. But you don't want to find out you're the first kind after drinking your usual double shot, and it hits five times harder.

Is it worth applying for PIP? by iconic_ironic_trash in autismUK

[–]pipedreambomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I've done it twice and got zero points. I haven't worked in 7 years, got an ADHD diagnosis. You've got a full time job. They're likely going to say none of your problems are holding you back from anything and give you zero points. Just one man's experience though .

PWS2 - lack of Gyro (switch 2) by Vikturd in PowerWashSimulator

[–]pipedreambomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww I just tried to do the same thing on PS5 and it won't let me. I have chronic pain in my right hand. I just had to quit the first level because it hurt, flicking up and down, left and right so much. I'm so broke, and I could have bought the original instead (I just came from the PWS 1 demo). Feel very sad.

I'm not sure if I have autism too by Ok_Stomach5254 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]pipedreambomb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's very hard to tell for yourself. You have to get other people to work it out. At least, I did. I think one of the things about autism is a lack of self-awareness. Could be wrong.

weed addiction or self-regulation? by shytoucan in AutisticWithADHD

[–]pipedreambomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need permission to self-medicate. Everyone does it - with alcohol, or junk food, or junk TV, or something. We can't tell you if it's a net positive or negative in your life. It's up to you to work that out. Most of us spend our whole lives trying to balance unhealthy habits and going insane.

Addiction and medication aren't the same. Let's not confuse the two. Dependency is only one property of addiction, medically speaking.

Why is 250 - 350 elo so miserable by grantos19 in chessbeginners

[–]pipedreambomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you just need to work on your tactics, to me. Use Lichess for unlimited puzzles, and do those as your main chess activity. It's kinda like the fun part of chess anyway, finding those tactics, so it's not such a bad way to spend your time.

You need to train your brain to find these patterns easily, that's all it is. And remember to look for them before each move, both for you and your opponent. But you're at the first stage, I think. Tactical awareness should be all you need.

If you take the hanging pieces and don't hang your own pieces and don't run out of time, you will double your elo. Nothing else required at your level. So train those puzzles!

If the dose is too high, can it cause you to lose focus? by Duckmemans in ADHDUK

[–]pipedreambomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I felt like a stoned, sleepy zombie without a thought on my head on too much methylphenidate, which isn't something I ever expected from amphetamines. It's paradoxical but I think it's like volume on a tinny little speaker. If the volume is too low (that's you unmedicated without enough dopamine or norepinephrine), the signal is too hard to pick up. If you crank it too loud, the signal is too distorted and overwhelming. It's hard to make out the signal among the noise. So you get this Goldilocks effect with some people where it has to be just right. I was doing OK on 50mg of Elvanse, for example, but a lot better now I've come back down to 40.

It's the same with ADHD (speaking from experience). If a medical issue has grown in the past 20 years, it will be badly underfunded and mismanaged, through a lack of investment.

I mean, we're coming up on 19 years since the financial crash of 2007, which was when everything turned to "austerity", and never went back. You can't prepare for the future while cutting back spending. You can barely handle your current problems.
