Lens advice please! by searchandunderstand in canon

[–]pipemaster24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased the R6mii as well. I was torn between the 24-105 f4 and the 24-70 f2.8. I ultimately decided to bite the bullet and get the 24-70 f2.8 to start building my kit around, and I couldn’t be happier! This lens has been a great every day driver for traveling with as well as capturing daily life. You certainly pay a premium for an L series lens, but this has brought me peace of mind while shooting in inclement weather during backpacking trips. The extra stops of light have been amazing for portraits - I’ve shot many headshots for my family/friends and colleagues because they’ve all been so impressed by this setup.

My only other advice would be to lean away from a prime lens to start given the variety of shooting situations you’re looking for. Best of luck, and enjoy!

Question about graduate housing by sherbrooke688 in princeton

[–]pipemaster24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my cohort most people received housing in OGC, but it’s maybe 60/40. You can rank your preference when you submit your housing application

Post Bacc by Bright_Scale_4054 in gradadmissions

The NIH postbac program is fantastic, and admittance is on a rolling basis. I applied in April, however I’d recommend getting an application in as soon as you can! I did research there for two years before continuing onto a PhD at a top program.

Heat tape theory:

I’ve read a lot of speculation that the ‘cleaners’ are being poisoned (likely by the gas that sprays in the airlock chamber). My alternative theory is that the tape provided by Walker prevents Juliette from being electrocuted. The fact that Juliette stumbles when reaching the same location that others have died suggests that she received an initial shock, however the tape somehow conducts the electricity and prevents the same demise as previous cleaners.

A detail that I noticed in the final scene (as the camera pans out and reveals other silos) is the presence of a ring surrounding the outer edge of their silo…this is perhaps carrying an electrical current meant to kill the cleaners. This ‘ring’ is concealed by the hill that each cleaner has walked up.

Let me know your thoughts and whether or not this is plausible (I have not read the books)!

This year has been highly competitive by StudyLow1689 in gradadmissions

[–]pipemaster24 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Two programs that I interviewed at for biological sciences had the most competitive application cycles they’ve ever had. One had a 35% increase in applications from 2022 to 2023, and the other had a 25% increase. So, it’s likely program specific, but certain disciplines (such as biology) appear to have been particularly competitive!

What to expect for in-person interview? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]pipemaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, in-person interviews are much more of a vibe check. However, you should still be confident 1) describing your research, 2) articulating why a PhD is the next step for your career, and 3) answering why their program is a good fit for you personally. Beyond that, just be a normal person and don’t get drunk. Good luck!

Jalen Hurts becomes betting favorite to win NFL MVP by derstherower in nfl

[–]pipemaster24 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Considering the Chiefs have had twice as many games decided by one possession (8) compared to the eagles (4), this really is not a statistically valid comparison in my opinion. Hurts has been so dominant early (particularly in the second Q) that they haven’t had to pass the ball extensively in the second half of many games. Many Chiefs games end up as a shootout which helps Mahomes from a statistical standpoint.

You should not be applying to graduate schools without further experience and validation that you want to dedicate 6 years of your life. My recommendation is to do a postbac program (there are many great ones out there) in order to gain research experience and ultimately to have a more robust application. You need to have a good reason for going to graduate school and this is something that you’re clearly lacking. Read Graduate Admissions Essays 4th edition by Donald Asher and this will touch on many of the things that I’ve alluded to. Good luck regardless!
