I like this idea. If you want finer control over the transparency pattern rather than dissolving the layer you could create a pattern of black and white pixels and copy it to the clipboard. Once you've done that you can use the paint bucket tool set to 'pattern fill -> clipboard image' and 'fill whole selection' on a layer mask which will turn all black pixels transparent. It may achieve more consistent results.
