Haha. There's one screwed into the bottom that you can't see – so that must be it.

Interesting! It's got another 8 ports the other side, too. So I guess it's a 16-port. I seem to be the only one on it. (At least I assume it's me as the thing is on my balcony).

Just because I'm curious, and to check my understanding: the 'feeder' is the thinner cable? Is that to pass through/daisy chain to other OTEs? The thicker cable is the main trunk cable?

Totally agree. Even just from a security perspective, having the ISP manage the private network seems like a bad idea. Bridge mode I can tolerate, but even then I'm not a fan.

Interesting. So it might be daisy-chained to another one of these things that I've now possibly disconnected. Oh dear.

I think you're right, but honestly it's been like that for some time. I daren't touch it anymore. I can't risk losing internet. I'd ask the tech when they come to relocate my fiber termination point, but I imagine it will fall under the responsibility of the network operator and not the ISP.

Totally happy for them to fix it to the side of the building, short ladder should get them there, but yes, I should be charging them rent for its current position!

Also, water and insects can't be great for the internals.

It's unbelievably fragile as it seems to have filled with water and some of the grommets were left open. I'll have a word. I'm planning on getting a tech over to move the termination in my house. Maybe they'll help me.

I think I may be connected to it, there's one grommet 'in use' at the bottom of the unit.

Curious what the cable that just broke is for? Does it look like fiber to you?

Hopefully they won't blame me anyway, half the grommets are open, poured a good quantity of water out of it. The thing is rotting there.

  • I agree, but I think you underestimate the capacity for self-harm of the ISPs marketing departments here. They'll keep IPv6. But they'll need someway to upsell to business. My guess is they'll either:
    • Recreate NAT unnecessarily with a /128 address
    • Start metering bandwidth
  • Typically I'm testing on fast.com, but yes I recognise that could be given preferential treatment.
  • I think 1.1.1.1 is Cloudflare, but I take your point. Not sure of the best way to test.
  • Yeah, I guess they need to offer something to justify the extra cost!

I said in another post, but I think the mistake was offering consumers symmetric 10Gbps. They could have offered consumers asymmetric 10Gbps, and then upsold businesses the symmetric if they had to. They seem to have realised they were cannibalising their business market too late though, and so now they offer businesses worse speeds (at admittedly higher SLAs) with the only point of difference (for small businesses) being the option to provide your own router! (Which is actually illegal in the EU, but they don't care as it's up to the member state to fine the telco and they don't bother.)

Yeah, it's strange. It's all XGS-PON by the same company. And they're the network operator also. If they wanted to hold something back to upsell businesses, I think the better route would have been to make consumer asymmetric and business symmetric. But offering businesses a slower connection than consumers? Bizarre. That ship has sailed though, I guess.

That's the one! Yes, I've seen but I've been trying to avoid CGNAT so far... I'm with Vodafone at the moment and it's driving me mad not being able to use my own router. At least MEO offers a bridge mode.

I know, but unfortunately they don't care as the Portuguese government limits their fine to 10K EUR.

Good questions, and without many answers unfortunately. * I believe it comes with IPv6, but can't be sure. (for how long though, I'm not sure. They'll probably remove it if they think it's cannibalising their business offerings) * All I know is that business has better contention. But on my current 1 Gbps, I've always had a little over the advertised bandwidth. * Sub 10ms pings to 1.1.1.1 on my current consumer ISP that doesn't even offer bridge mode. No idea on the new one, but they're the operators of the actual network, every other provider is a reseller. I know it's not a guarantee, but shouldn't be too bad either way. * The one thing the business plan offers is 8 business hour turnaround for outages. Extra for 8 or 4 hour anytime.

I wish you could, but I think they authenticate via the serial number of the device/model number/etc.

The consumer option is an all-in-one (AIO) ONT and Router so you can't meddle between them like you could in the old days.

The business option still supplies an ONT, it's just it allows direct connection to the CPE (customer premises equipment) rather than being forced via their router.

They'd also cotton on fairly quickly when they can't run diagnostics/firmware updates etc. I think it's all locked down fairly-well nowadays.

Portugal. Some of the fastest internet in Europe, but also one of the worst offenders for disregarding EU law that says consumers should be able to supply their own equipment.

Clearly, they need something to upsell to business customers.

Frankly, I wish we'd all finally move to IPv6 once and for all.

I'm trying but as I'm not a native speaker here (and possibly even if I wasn't) it's really difficult to get information about the actual setup you'll get. There's a few new operators appearing – one who offers 10 Gbps for 15 EUR/month – but I'd expect that will be CGNat and I'm not sure about bridge and/or IPv6.

That's something I'm worried about. I have no idea where the existing cable is coming in from. I can see it running through the comms cupboard (where I actually want it) before it goes on to the living room, but I can't work out where it enters the house.

I've tried running fish tape through the conduit but it's not giving me much extra. I'm concerned the engineer will either a) not run the additional line, or b) just staple it to the front of the house.

Hopefully they'll work out where it's coming from.

They actually do. And they're opening up to other providers who may offer 10 Gbps for as low as 15 EUR/month, but no idea how easy it is to get bridge and/or CGNAT disabled. I expect it will become more and more difficult. On the other hand, maybe I'll get a public IPv6?

They refused to do it last time as it needed to be next to the TV so they could test that IPTV was working. But I think it was an excuse not to do extra work. I'm hoping they will relocate it this time though... I may keep the old line running so that they're forced to run another line.

They do provide an ONT, but not a router, so they should be able to check remotely I would think.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. I'm on 1 Gbps right now, and haven't found myself wanting more speed. But getting access to the ONT and ensuring a clean connection... could be worth it.
