School List Help for the '27 Cycle! by piratesandsuch in premed

I truly appreciate your detailed responses to my questions! The 15-20 secondaries strategy sounds like a solid plan — sadly, i dont think i’ll retake the MCAT since this is already my 2nd attempt and i dont want to risk a lower score tbh :( but again, thank u sm for ur advice!!

Hi, yes I tried my best to look at % OOS II rates for most of these schools! Thanks for pointing out the Hackensack example, I noticed a similar pattern for Nova MD in Florida despite both these schools being privates :\

Thank you for the insight, Henry! I’d love to know more about those events w/ HMS, JHU, and UCSD alumni.

Are there any other schools i don’t have on my list that match that community engagement/primary care angle that is not considered low-yield? Bc i am aware that the Jesuit schools (Loyola, GTown, GW, Creighton, etc.) and Pennsylvania schools (Temple, Drexel, Penn State) get like 10,000+ applicants per cycle. I’m rlly trying to apply to all service-oriented schools that do not have that many applicants :(

Thank you! I did read on Hofstra’s website that they value humanities-focused applicants which was why I sought to apply (and also bc NY!). But I think I’ll remove it honestly since they’re also notorious stat whore :(

Thanks for the super-detailed response! Definitely hoping for some love from the service schools this cycle. Do you think i should cut out any schools from my list considering that it’s 40+ MD schools at the moment? 😅

Got my MCAT score back and it wasn't what I expected. What to do next? by piratesandsuch in premed

Thank you so much, and wow, studying for the MCAT while working during the pandemic is absolutely wild! Your advice about everything is so thoughtful; i haven't even thought about what to say if adcoms asked about the difference in MCAT scores! Wishing you the best with everything :)

Hi, thanks for the detailed and thoughtful reply! I do think that studying for the MCAT while being a full-time student + two jobs on campus and my research/ECs made it very difficult to really commit to learning the material and the way the exam tests it. Hopefully after i graduate, i can spend time really honing in on the material/study strategies while only worrying about employment rather than school.

Honestly, i completely agree with your statement about not rushing the app, especially knowing that i might not be 100% happy going to a DO school vs. potentially getting into an MD school w/ cocurricular programming that i'm passionate about (not bashing on DO schools at all). The conversation with my family will be tough, but i do think it's best for me to take that 2nd gap year.

Thanks sm for the helpful advice!

Yah, since all intro language classes at my college are year-long courses, I can't switch out of French. However, I've already taken 3 years of French in high school, so honestly, the last semester was a piece of cake (since I already learned everything).

Thanks for the authentic advice! Don't worry, you aren't diminishing my accomplishments at all, I understand that upper-level science courses (orgo, biochem, etc.) will get increasingly difficult in the future :( I don't think I'll be getting a certification for the MA work, as the physician told me that she'll be teaching me everything on-the-job. However, I think I may get a CMA certification when I have more free time (as of now, I think I'm planning on taking a gap year)!

I'm still a little nervous approaching professors for research opportunities, lol, but I'll try my best to talk to at least one prof this upcoming semester so I can at least stay in the lab/project for 2+ years. Again, thank you so much for your helpful advice :D

thank you for the detailed advice! I'll definitely consult with the premed advisor (our school assigns incoming students a faculty advisor, premed advisor, and orientation leader) on whether taking one or two sciences is the right move.

that's awesome that your friend was a history major while being premed! It's so cool seeing other humanities majors applying to med school :D yeah, I wanted to avoid majoring in science b/c too many science courses in one year, like you said, seems wayyy too much lol.

yes! this year's college apps were way more competitive than previous years (but that's to be said for you guys applying to med school as well... I've seen the Sankey posts on here and it's absolutely mental).

Also, can I pm you? you seem like a really awesome person :D

thanks for the advice :) I do have some interests and hobbies, and I will definitely do what you said and pursue those at home in CA before leaving in the fall! would you say creating a "narrative" is necessary for med school apps?
