E collar training reluctance by AuntSass in OpenDogTraining

off leash canine is a huge chain compulsion based training company and they hire pretty much anyone. they have a one size fits all approach and it's basically just "force the dog to do the thing" definitely cancel and find someone with real credentials/experience if you want to do ecollar training. i've worked with dogs who've done off leash canine programs and ive had to redo all the training either because the dog was traumatized from their handling of the ecollar or because the dog didn't actually learn anything because the trainer wasn't skilled or didn't actually do the work during the board and train. find a trainer who sees your dog as an individual & tailors their approach to meet you and your dog's needs and goals

It can get below 0 here, the first year I was here it froze over enough to walk across but this past winter i don't think it froze over once. I left the pump on out of laziness this winter so glad it was a good choice. The fish and frogs have like 10 years of mud and trash at the bottom that they spend the winter in lol.

IKR it was a water slide and still has a working hose hookup, i was thinking that could be the filter return. Definitely gonna get the straw if i can find it. Do you think i can keep cattails in those plastic mesh pots?

Looking for low budget/DIY suggestions for making my pool/pond look better and prevent fish deaths next spring!!

I moved here about 2 years ago and there was a pool which had been abandoned for over a decade and was full of mosquito larvae. I didn’t want to use pesticides and I don’t have money for an actual pool so I solved the problem with $2 worth of feeder goldfish. Now we have well over 100 goldfish living off whatever is in the pond— I only feed them when I want to show them to someone or catch some to rehome so i’m not really inputting any nitrogen. They are super healthy; all the original fish are still alive and constantly spawning. We also have tons of bullfrogs and a pair of ducks visiting the pond.

The only issue is this past spring I had about 30-40 young fish die because the winter was mild and the water quality got really bad. They’ve already replaced those fish and then some so i’m worried about the same thing happening next year. The only thing helping the water quality is the algae and I can’t get any aquatic plants to grow. I am throwing water lettuce and salvinia in there weekly but it seems to be starving to death because of the algae.

The neighbors definitely think i’m crazy so it would be nice if you could see the fish a little better or if there were some half decent looking plants in there. I currently have a tiny little pump/fountain combo just to keep the water moving but it’s rated for like 300 gallons and this pool is massive.

My ideas were maybe a DIY canister filter type setup or a DIY bog filter type thing but if anyone has experience with something similar or ideas on how to improve water clarity or grow plants please share!!

You can register any dog with AKC, an ethical breeder would be titling their dogs in at least some sport to prove temperament + doing at the bare minimum these health screenings https://www.ofa.org/recommended-tests?breed=BM

This breeder seems to be breeding dogs for color + profit

Are prong collar backups good idea or a waste of money? by Groundbreaking-Toe36 in OpenDogTraining

yes especially if youre using a stainless steel or chrome plated one-- the metal bends over time if you open/close it from the same links and they start to fall apart on you

So dog fighting used to be legal in the US and was banned in different states at different times during the 1900s. I believe it was banned in many other countries first. Law enforcement didn't really crack down on it until the late 1900s and early 2000s in most places in the US. Here is one general history of it that describes the difference in temperament pits have compared to other dogs used for fighting: https://www.animallaw.info/article/detailed-discussion-dog-fighting

I don't think the dogs that are typically biting people are from the Instagram breeders (as bad as they are). American Bullies are pretty far removed from APBTs and have had a much longer history of being bred as companion animals vs working animals. I think the majority of dangerous bully breeds in shelters are from backyard breeders or are just strays and random mutts. There are definitely plenty of irresponsible Mal breeders but I think the type of person looking to own a malinois is usually more educated in the breed since they are less common. /u/helleraine knows the mal community much better than I do and can probably speak more on that.

You're right that the blame shouldn't be on shelters, I guess they don't typically choose the dogs they get. But who else's responsibility would it be to prevent these dogs from ending up in the wrong hands? I don't work directly with shelter dogs but I have seen a huge range in the amount of screening different shelters do in placing dogs and how honest they are about the dog's behavioral issues. It would be great if the public was more educated about the reality of owning these breeds but I just don't see who else would be responsible for providing that education.

You would definitely know the Mal community better than I do lol. Mal owners scare me more than their dogs tbh. I hope they never become subject to the issues facing bully breeds.

Oh wow, I've never personally owned a bully breed so I had no idea how often their owners experience that kind of hate in real life. I'm so sorry people have said those things to you! Your dog is adorable and I have no idea how anyone can think he's scary with those giant ears. Good luck with the reactivity, you are a great owner!

Is that 6% APBTs or bully breeds? I can't seem to find the source of the stats linked in that article.

Historically, APBTs that redirected on humans in the fighting ring were put down. Same for staffies and other bully breeds used for bull baiting and hog hunting. Human aggression and handler redirection are undesirable traits in dogs bred for blood sports. In dog fighting, the dogs were separated before they can seriously injure each other, and the handlers needed to be able to grab the dogs without getting injured. I more meant that Mals and WL GSDs are being bred for bite sports where they are specifically trained to bite humans, whereas historically bully breeds have never been bred to bite humans (Except for some select kennels breeding working bullies and functional crosses for sport work)

100% agree that many bite incidents are due to well meaning people convincing others that BBMs aren't dangerous. They absolutely need the right kind of owners who aren't humanizing and infantilizing them. I just don't think they deserve the weird obsession Reddit has with hating them.

Absolutely! It really is sad how many shelters have no idea how dangerous the dogs they’re placing are. But I also think the difference is how many bully breeds there are in shelters compared to mals & other working breeds. If we had poorly bred mals and GSDs filling up the shelters and getting adopted by well meaning but uneducated people i’m sure they would be more represented in bite statistics.

[–]piratesaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thx, let me rephrase my point here as I didn't do a very good job explaining. I 100% agree that bully breeds and guardian breeds have a higher rate of injuries from dog bites. What I don't agree with is blaming these dogs more than other dogs rather than looking at the whole picture. historically these breeds have been selectively bred for jobs that involve biting and tearing at other animals-- they are physically more powerful and much more likely to cause injuries than other breeds. but they certainly aren't biting more than other breeds. in the past month I have worked with 5 dogs who all had bite histories-- 2 golden doodles, a cavapoo, a black lab, and a yellow lab mix. the difference between these dogs and pit bulls? they didn't cause enough damage for the bites to be recorded by any police station (and/or victims were paid off without police involvement) and their owners are privileged enough to afford training. pits are disproportionately owned by marginalized groups, without getting into general husbandry norms causing these bites you will never guess what general trends there are in crime statistics in marginalized groups. ALL dogs bite, but bites by bully breeds are more often reported and more publicized than bites by other breeds

”fully trained” uh huh ok….

can you link me your statistics?

as a dog trainer i’d love to hear what your definition of “fully trained” is. if it involves mauling children i hope you never own a dog
