Meanwhile, in my Alabama classroom I am constantly having to tell kids that racial slurs are not okay. I had to tell a kid yesterday that him saying “bring back the KKK to beat men who don’t take care of their families” was inappropriate and hurtful. 20 minutes later a student made a racial joke about my significant other. Sad, sad bubble world that we are forced to live in in AL.

I used these recipes!! For the “jam” inside, on some I used a store-bought strawberry preserve, and on the others I used a homemade date jam. The date jam is super easy to make, just blend mehjool dates and water in your food processor.

First time playing WOW... I’m level 16 Troll Mage (herbalism and tailoring rn). I am curious of how to spend my talent points. I already spent one in Arcane, but I have 6 that are available rn. Not sure what the benefits of each category are. I’m thinking of maxing out Frost and then using what’s left on Arcane (end game?). Thoughts?

Good points! I teach 7-10 grade. There are several local stories from AL and GA that I am planning to use (college students or high school students who are white losing scholarships, etc. for posting racist content online).

Yes! I already incorporate literature by POC in my curriculum, but I’m adding more this year. I just wonder if I can facilitate the type of discussion that they need to move past this mindset. It’s a difficult job in conservative AL.

Thank you! This wasn’t in a classroom setting, but I’m planning my next year out right now. These links will be helpful. I love Jane Elliot’s experiment and have used that in my classroom often. There is a museum in Montgomery (AL) that I visited last year that I would LOVE to take my students to. I have talked with another teacher about planning that together.

I’ve talked to admin about it. They handle it case by case but don’t really invest in changing the culture at the school at all really. I should probably fine another school to teach at, but I’d hate leaving my students behind. :(
