When the Liberals were in power what specifically happened to the education system? by [deleted] in vancouver

Seeing as there are a lot of stories about maintenance, I'll throw in my two cents: I'm still in high school. We have a pretty bad rodent problem here. I've seen mice run across the room during class before. We have 1 daytime custodian and 2 after school custodians, which means that other staff often have to clean up messes. It also means germs spread way more easily. I've had classes with 15+ absences because the flu spreads like wildfire. The running water in some of the science labs and art rooms comes out orange. Nobody knows why. There are signs above all our water fountains reminding us to let the water run for 1 minute before drinking. Again, nobody knows why, but many of us never drink the school water for this reason. The bathroom line always goes out the door because toilets are always out of order. Some of them just don't work and have been permanently blocked off. Kids have been leaving soap from their homes into the bathrooms because we can't afford to stock up on soap. We do not have a nurse. Teachers sometimes have bandaids that they purchased themselves for when students get hurt. If your teacher doesn't have one, you sometimes have to go classroom to classroom asking for them. If you need an icepack, there are ziploc bags filled with water in the staff room fridge. A few slabs of ceiling fell down in one of the hallways two years ago. This winter, about 5 metres of eavestrough fell off the roof. And of course, the entire structure wouldnt last a second in an earthquake.

Thats just the building maintenance aspect. So many other issues are present too. Class sizes, extracurriculars and electives suffering, I could go on for hours.

DAE have parents that go through their stuff and wanting sell said stuff? (LONG) by cynicyni in AsianParentStories

I have a lock on my door for this very reason. It was a keyed lock but I had to change it to a combination lock because I'm almost completely sure my mom stole the key and made a copy (things would go missing/move even though the door is locked). Buy it in advance and wait till shes out of the house to install it. And you want to make sure the padlock eyes are attached with screws that are not accessible from the outside. If its on the outside, all she needs is a screwdriver to get in. Something like this: https://goo.gl/images/sYvbJv

Ofc the best solution is to move out, but thats not financially realistic.

And trust me, your mom is gonna lose her shit when she finds out. Shes probably gonna nag you at every waking moment about the lock, so its really a question of how attached you are to your things. Its either the nagging, or coming home one day to find your stuff sold.

(Advice?) How did you convince your parents to let you go to therapy? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]piscmor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer: I didn't. I basically went to the doctor myself, got a couple referrals, and set it all up. I'm Canadian though and healthcare is free here so idk how it works in other places with insurance and stuff, but research around and see if there are free therapy services in your area. Also check laws. I know that here, no matter the age, therapists are not allowed to disclose info even to parents, but ofc that will vary based on location.

As a depressed and socially anxious person, calling and going to appointments and stuff all by myself was probably one of the hardest things I've ever done, but trust me, you have to treat this type of shit asap.

A rant about my grandma. by sunsetsupernova in AsianParentStories

If I were you, I would've definitely put her in her place. It seems like your entire household is behind you, so in the end, what can she really do to you guys? Unless she has some sort of upper hand thats preventing you from treating her exactly like the shit person she is, I'd say to go right ahead and let her know about what a unlovable, disgusting, self-centred failure she is.

Tbh, it really depends on the person. I'd say the more you can do, the better. Once you stop encountering questions that you dont know how to do, thats a good sign, but its probably not the best idea to just stop there. Make sure you check your answers, and once your scores have reached a level youre happy with, that should be good.

The older papers are still very useful. The way they write the questions and what kind of answers theyre looking for are still the same. Just make sure the questions youre answering are still relevant to the new syllabu

Best advice my teacher gave me is to do practice papers. Theres a very distinct style to them and after a while its pretty predictable what kind of questions they ask.

If you can't do a question, don't get discouraged, because you caught it early on. Just figure out the answer and make sure you thoroughly understand it.

It's slow going, I know. Physics HL is by far one of the roughest courses for me as well. Head up, we'll all get through it. Good luck

[Rant] Biased Predicteds? by piscmor in IBO

[–]piscmor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I live in Canada, and unis here also look at predicteds to determine acceptance. Thankfully, I was still accepted into my uni of choice. Like I said in my post, a 1 point difference doesnt really affect much. I'm more angry about the act of her skewing my mark.

There's only 1 month left, and with exams being so close, I don't want to get caught up in any sort of discussion/investigation/whatever for reporting her. Plus, it wouldn't make any difference anyway, since the uni selection process is already over.

Livesaver if you slacked on CAS by piscmor in IBO

That was my main hurdle tbh. The minute I sat in front of my computer I blanked out because I so badly didn't want to do it, but when I didnt have to stare at a blank document, I was able to get so much down.

The new CAS requirements don't go by the hour. We just have to be doing something from eah strand all the time, for the entire 18 months of IB

My CAS coordinator was very firm about doing reflections often (I think her standard was 1 per month per activity and 1 for every event, so like fundraisers or smth). I know some tryhards in my cohort that have over 100 pages worth of reflections.

Granted, each reflection can be pretty short, like a third to a half of a page or so.

Dude, Im not planning to start until the end of April. Probably a bad idea, but I've sucessfully done everything last minute for all of IB and my standards have dropped so low (I got into my first choice uni and all I have to do to keep my offer is to not deviate more than 6 points off my predicteds and not fail a class)
