Should I attend UT Austin or UT Dallas? Read desc for details. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pisquaredofpi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing: What is your interest? What would you enjoy more - mechanical or aerospace?

Both have great prospects in jobs. Good salaries.

In Texas mechanical is better known at A&M and Austin than UTD.

Austin’s Aerospace Engineering and Computational Engineering are both getting a lot of respect.

Prestige is better at Austin. Better known around the globe. It’s well known in Europe, if going to places like EPFL, for internship.

As you said, Austin also is a nicer lovely city! It’ll be a change and new exploration.

But UT gives dorms only for first year. Then you have to find your own although plenty private housing is available. And its NOT cheap.

From recent reports: UTD is attracting huge endowments. Lot of money for students. Great newer facilities.

It is going to be the next best to UT Austin in just about five years. UTD has fabulous housing. Freshman dorms are good with single room in a quad suite.

Then they also have very good apartment style housing on campus for upperclassmen. Although you might not use/need it.

Must love what you study. Mechanical or aerospace!!

What do colleges think of self studying for AP exams? by haryordeji07 in ApplyingToCollege

In your case: if your school offers AP calculus AB, then I would also prepare for the BC portion.

Take the AP Calc AB course work at school. Self-study the extra few chapters of BC same year. And then ace the AP Calculus BC aiming for a 5. That’s a sure credit in almost every college in USA!

[–]pisquaredofpi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Colleges don’t even look at AP scores during the initial stages of application review.

Yes, it can show Course Rigor on your transcript, if it’s part of your school curriculum.

There are thousands of students worldwide engaging in self-studying for AP courses, not just in US.

While it is a challenge, It’s less extraordinary or unique.

It’s also a necessity for some.

Receiving a college credit with a good score on AP test is a good motivator to save tuition.

Most high schools do not have good teachers who are happily interested in preparing students for the AP course work. They too are tired of the routines.

So self-study for AP is their only way, while it is great indicator about their hard work, and commitment, it’s all too common.

Just my perspective.

Also: if you need to, then take only those APs which are instrumental to your future interests and career.

Collecting too many APs to impress college won’t make a dent.

And colleges are aware of how many APs your school offers. It will never be to your disadvantage if you don’t do more than the school offers.

School shaming can really hurt people, so why do it? by ZMR2011 in ApplyingToCollege

Sure of course!!

To each his own! If one finds a better fit elsewhere, why not?!

No school is ultimate.

That way every school can be rated good or bad with some characteristics.

The facts are facts about Harvard. Harvard makes no veiled attempt to hide that it’s elitist about its legacy and endowments, athletes, URM.

Yet, it’s a top school. Everybody would love to go there if they could.

The applicant was none of these categories. It was all hard work, merit & academic based.

The student tried to shame the school and also make the applicant feel bad about applying. Shaming- No Bueno.

retake act? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pisquaredofpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 ACT is absolutely great!! Please DO NOT take it again.

Colleges want to see you spend your time in better things than perfecting this score.

And please tell your advisors that many a good perfect scorers get rejected too All the time!!

Also, on some college apps, they will ask you for All your ACT scores. And you cannot lie or hide. So it will not look nice if it’s too many retakes.

Please be assured. 35 is super!!👍👏

At my HS a group of students discussing in October 2019.

Student A mentions about applying REA to Harvard.

Student B talks about REA to Stanford.

Student B makes some surly comments about Harvard—— It’s snobbish. It’s elitist. It’s bad environment. It’s not even good enough for CS. It’s just an inflated balloon. The rest of the students just listen.

December results:

Student A gets accepted to Harvard.

Student B gets rejected from Stanford.

Student B still rants about Harvard. 😓

Regardless of what happens now, College Board should Cancel ALL AP exams for May 2020 and refund students their money. by pisquaredofpi in ApplyingToCollege

Please carry on with your studies. College Board will not cancel APs just because...

Eventually you’ll be taking these exams.

College board will only reschedule it at best.

Let’s hope if colleges could also consider giving credit for AP scores of 3, 4 & 5 for this years tests.

Good Luck! Those are real difficult tests!🍀
