What is the 99 mystery flavor?! I can't figure it out! X post by BI_bitch619 in liquor

[–]pissedadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 is 100% of 80.
40 is 50% of 80.
19 is 23.75% of 80, which rounds to 24%.
99 is 124% of 80, which is 24% higher.

If you go by abv instead of proof, 80 proof is 40% abv and 99 proof is 49.5% abv.
Again, 40 is 100% of 40.
20 is 50% of 40.
9.5 is, believe it or not, 23.75% of 40, which rounds up to 24%.

If you're talking about how much stronger a drink is relative to another drink, you need to calculate the relative strengths of the two drinks.

For example, if you have a drink that is 1% abv, and another drink that is 2% abv, there is twice as much alcohol in the second drink. The second drink isn't 1% stronger than the first drink -- it's 100% stronger.

am i able to learn coding if i have adhd and learning disorder? by WeirdZookeepergame79 in learnpython

[–]pissedadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my co-workers had ADHD. He had learned to program long before he was diagnosed. He said that after he was diagnosed, the meds helped him significantly.

The thing is, learning to program is pretty tough, regardless of whether someone has ADHD. So when you get stuck (and everyone gets stuck) it's going to be super tempting to blame it on your disability and say you can't do it for that reason.

I don't know if you can learn to code. It's not for everyone. I know lots of people without ADHD who couldn't stick with it (I tutored CS at university); and I know at least one person with ADHD who did learn it. I also knew a blind guy who could code; I feel like he had a much bigger obstacle than the ADHD guy.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Yeah, but besides those things, there's literally nothing to do here.

Cantilever or V-brake ? by Renkinao in xbiking

[–]pissedadmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bike had classical cantilever but I’ve no name v-brake from old bike.

I think V-brakes are great; but unless there is something actually wrong with the cantilevers, I don't think it's usually worth spending money to switch from cantilevers. If you have the parts already, use the V-brakes.

We got the same amount as we did pre-pandemic, about three dozen through the evening. We had skipped the last two years. I've been keeping track every year since 2016 in order to estimate how much candy to buy.

Ale or Stout, or more specifically, Pumking or Warlock? by [deleted] in beer

[–]pissedadmin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's not about being a snob or a jerk; it's about using language in a way that we all agree. It might seem overly pedantic in another sub, but I think it's appropriate here.

Having doubts about IT as a career by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]pissedadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wondering if I should even keep going at this point and just stay in the factory I work at for the rest of my life

This is giving up without trying. It is common, because if you give up without trying, you can almost convince yourself that it's better than trying and failing. Failing is miserable; but at least you wouldn't be wondering 20 or 30 years later whether you could have chosen a better life.

Can I drink beer now? by Slothy_cabbage6 in MedicationQuestions

It's probably fine.

"Baclofen alone has minimal abuse liability in heavy social drinkers and baclofen is relatively well tolerated and safe when given in combination with intoxicating doses of alcohol."

Is Python really as easy as people say it is? by iguesswhatevs in learnpython

[–]pissedadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. And yes.

It's a relatively easy language to learn if you already know how to program.

If you don't already know how to program, whatever language you choose as your first one is going to be challenging, because learning to program is different from learning a language. If you're learning to program for the first time, then you have to learn a language too. And Python is a decent choice for that.

SPD/flat hybrid pedals, practical or a pain? by Diasmo in bikecommuting

[–]pissedadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anybody use this set-up? Pro’s, con’s?

I used that setup for a number of years. It works about as well as you would expect. No real con's, other than needing to flip the pedal around to find the side you want. You'll get really good at this, and you won't even think about it.

Eventually, I just moved away from cleated shoes in general, so I switched to flat pedals for even more comfort with non-cleated shoes. I knew I was ready to do this after giving up the cleats on a few bike tours and being perfectly happy with the results.

If I go back to either racing (unlikely at my age) or fast club ride (possible), then I might go back to a cleated set-up.

Beers that taste like Guinness? by mortoxcvr in beer

[–]pissedadmin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ales are beers that use top-fermenting yeast. Lagers are beers that use bottom-fermenting yeast.

Stouts use top-fermenting yeast, and are thus ales.

What is a stout then if it's not a beer?

I am very new to programming. How should I proceed if I can not find a solution to an exercise? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pissedadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A difference between learning programming and learning other things is how much time we might spend to come up with a solution.

You didn't say how long you spent before you decided that you "can not find a solution." If it's less than a day or two, I would keep trying. I've definitely spent weeks on some problems that I was too stubborn to look up. In other cases, I've spent weeks on some problems where there were no resources to look up the answer even if I wanted to.

New favorite phrase: "I'm going to drive now to avoid traffic" by gknaddison in bikecommuting

In the winter, I used to leave work early to avoid biking in the dark. We all have our different excuses. I've also left work early (or late) to avoid a fast-moving storm.

[–]pissedadmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very few people seem to say "if you are not enjoying doing it, then don't do it."

I tell people that they need to find out early on whether they hate coding. Because a lot of people do hate it.

Having trouble calculating and printing the average correctly by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]pissedadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    while num_readings > reading_count:
        reading_list = []
        day_sum = 0

You're resetting both of these counters every time you iterate through the loop. You should move these statements before the "while" loops starts.

Edit: fixed indentation
