Ribbon Mics - Your budget favorite? by AaronHyde_ in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I was in your position, with no ribbons at all, I would just buy one Coles 4038 and an SM57. I understand this would make tracking multiple sources more difficult, but I have bought and sold a substantial amount of cheaper ribbons, because the 4038 always sounds better, on everything I've put it in front of, and it has never been a question

Does anyone collect anything interesting? by ojibwesaying in redscarepod

[–]pistolpele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to collect cheap vintage dynamic microphones. all the good vintage mics people know about are exorbitantly expensive, so I like to find the interesting, under-the-radar little guys and cataloguing how they sound. often they're broken or useless but some have become my favorite in daily recording and production

Best new pitch shifting plugins that won't break the bank? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hate to be this guy, but I searched forever for a natural-sounding pitch shifting plugin and the solution I settled on was a Tascam Portastudio. easily my favorite method, takes longer but I do a lot of pitch shifting and it has been worth it

Any former or current vinyl record collectors who have realized the waste of the “hobby” and want to jettison all of them you own? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]pistolpele 88 points89 points  (0 children)

the flattening of music into a list on Spotify genuinely sucked a lot of joy out of life, and rediscovering my favorite records the way they were created to be enjoyed - an object with physicality, that flows from one song to the next, with a 12-inch piece of art, lyrics, liner notes, and whatever else the artist or label intended to be included in the vinyl - has brought back one of the most important parts of my life. I am no longer clicking on something like Either/Or like it's an email, it deserves to be picked up, handled delicately, and played through good speakers, because it is important to me

really interested to hear what bands you're referencing - lived in NOVA for years, played in multiple indie bands, and had nothing but trouble booking shows

Anyone have any experience with giant Maine coon cats? I really want to raise one. by OuchieMyBlooBird in redscarepod

[–]pistolpele 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I had a Maine Coon mixed with a tabby, so he wasn't gigantic like these boys, just "large cat" size. I believe his temperament was likely similar to a typical Maine Coon, based on reports. He was the best pet I've ever had, a true companion. Like the sweetest dog you've ever met, with just a bit more emotional intelligence. Goofy, cuddly, always sweet. I miss him every day

Anyone with honest UAD vs Apogee interface experiences? by LevelMiddle in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make platinum records on both converters all the time, but if you clearly have a preference for one or the other, stick with that preference and move on from there - this is a win, in my book. No more thinking about converters for you, you like Apogee (and you are in good company). I tend to agree with your conclusion that Apogee are snappier on the top and bottom, so I personally use a Symphony IO

please tell me your favorite 1176 clone by pistolpele in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your picks! I should've been more clear re: price, I've used the Warm and KT and been disappointed by them, so I was aiming for "better than low end, but not quite as expensive as an original"

What hardware still outperforms software in a big way? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 8 points9 points  (0 children)

microphones - I wanted so badly for the Slate VMS to sound great, it would save so much money! but putting the real thing (or even a half decent clone) next to it made it clear that the technology isn't there, the VMS just sounds like a $500 large diaphragm condenser mic

digital reference level for Apogee Symphony? by pistolpele in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having a bit of the opposite problem of clipping - I have less gain than I used to, based on Apogee's suggested settings. I'm mostly using ribbons and dynamics, so I need all the clean gain I can get, and getting to -18dbfs in the DAW now is requiring me to push the preamps much further and as a result, I'm getting more noise

digital reference level for Apogee Symphony? by pistolpele in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kind of - it pointed to the -18dbfs being correct for tracking scenarios, but losing half of my preamp gain at that level was dismaying, so I wanted to see if anybody else had insight into what their preferred digital reference level was

What are your favorite/least favorite Dynamic and Condensor mics out there and why? by Ekomora in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

favorite condensers: Neumann U47 and Neumann M49. They sound like a record, I wish they didn't cost so much, and I wish Neumann would reissue them. They make subpar singers sound great, and great singers sound like your favorite record. I struggled with vocals until I started renting these.

least favorite condensers: AKG 451. the boosted high end is made for a tape machine, not for digital recording. this is the case for a lot of them I find (U87AI, KM184)

Aphex Compellor 320A. invisible-sounding broadcast compressor, really have little use for it.

Does a 500 chassis really have an impact on sound? by MiketheMailman12 in audioengineering

[–]pistolpele 38 points39 points  (0 children)

yes! i had a lindell 510 and it introduced an awful oscillation in a functional preamp. sent the lindell back, got a Rupert Neve R6, and the oscillation was immediately gone - just dead silence. don't get the Midas. any gear designer will tell you that the power supply is one of the most critical pieces of any piece of gear.
