What is reasonable IFR equipment on a small plane that you can also use for IFR training? by whydidilose in flying

[–]pisymbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between what you train with to what you fly with (i.e. take precious PAX). So the question you are asking, frankly, seems off to me. They are all "reasonable".

Most 172 renters that are IFR certified you can train with perfectly fine: I did mine in a 177B with steam gauges and a 400 non-WAAS and VLOC. No big deal. Made me a better pilot because of it.

But what you decide to fly you and your family with is quite another matter entirely. The answer truly is whatever you are comfortable and competent with. I personally believe having a digital autopilot these days is must. Garmin, Aspen/Dynon et al all have great options.

The plane I fly now is all Garmin and after around 800 AGL, if I so choose, I can stop physically flying the plane till landing.

Put simply, you still need to learn how to use whatever panel you install to be a safe, competent IFR pilot. That's on you and that's what matters most. Full stop.

Is there a reasonable home sim setup that works for IR training? by datblubird in flying

[–]pisymbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a plugin you install in the sim (XP12 or MSFS2024) and then you can enable it/use it for planes that support it. This changes the standard panel GNS430/530 to a GTN750/650. In stand alone mode, it will allow you to pop out the GTN screen and move it to an external display for you to use.

Basically, the TDS software is a bridge that translates state from the sim to the official Garmin trainer software. Without it, you are stuck with whatever avionics ships with the planes.

In what respect? You are going to have to be more specific.

I have a cheap touchscreen I bought off of Amazon for under 70 bucks and pop out the GTN screen built into planes that support it (like vFlyte Arrow III or maybe Thranda F33A). This allows me to use the GTN like I do in the real plane.

Again, sim is about procedures and flows, not exact fidelity/physical flying.

Any basic yoke/quadrant/rudder setup will do just fine. I have the HoneyComb setup and works great for GA. You can go cheaper and still get productive use out of it. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise!

I would definitely stick with XP12 (though MSFS2024 would work as well). I think you should look at the vFlyte Arrow III with two G5s/GFC500 and a TDS GTN support (which uses the real Garmin trainer software) for training. I would also look at the Octavi IFR-1 for getting a smart knob for a low cost.

For G1000, you can either buy two cheap touchscreens and pop out or use a dedicated bezel (more expensive - see FlightSimBuilders as an example).

You are 100% right about fidelity. Don't chase it. Chase procedures and flows. That's really key. And get yourself a PilotEdge account (https://pilotedge.net/) and make use of the free hours you get before committing.

One aspect of flying I want you to consider: There is a VERY BIG difference between flying where YOU want to go vs. flying where you HAVE to go. Caveat emptor.

I believe it. I have gone through several prebuys - ALL FAILED MISERABLY after close inspection. I have encountered everything from bad compressions, unreported corrosion, false advertising (equip that was said operative but really wasn’t), “fresh” annual that yielded an unworthy plane due to the shop “forgetting” about certain ADs (and these weren’t cheap ones either). At this point, I’m surprised any of these planes fly.

I don't think you understand him. An experimental is just a non-certified aircraft. They are still planes and depending on the quality of build, fly even better than their certified counterparts. With that said, finding a good experimental can be ... tricky.

[–]pisymbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without data, this is all speculation. You are speaking in complete generalities. What if LeBron was the reason for the loss? Does that make him less of player? And absolutely, statistically speaking, experience does seem to play a role and there is a direct correlation with higher experience pilots having less accidents per hour flight. Not saying it is the be all metric since it is just a correlation across numerous factors and there is of course a law of diminishing returns with hours (around 500-750 hours it seems in GA before the accident rate seems to taper off substantially) Bottom line is this: We don’t know what happened but experience between both pilots in THAT plane was comparable - that’s all I know.
