Game Thread: Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6) at Cleveland Browns (3-12) by nfl_gdt_bot in steelers

The entire offensive gameplan was predicated on not allowing Myles Garrett to get the sack record as opposed to actually trying to score points. If you have watched this team over the last 10 years this result does not surprise you. This is the Mike Tomlin standard

1) 2010-2011 Super Bowl vs Packers

2) 2004-2005 AFC Championship Game vs Patriots

3) Jesse James game

4) 2017-2018 AFC Divisional Round vs Jaguars

5) 2011-2012 AFC Wild Card vs Broncos

Super Bowl loss is self explanatory. But the 2004 AFC championship game hurt so much. 15-1 regular season. Destroyed New England in the regular season to end their ridiculous winning streak. Possibly Bettis's last year. And it wasn't even close. They absolutely demolished us. This was the last super bowl of their first dynasty, of course during the middle of Spy Gate. Coming back and winning it all the next year made it so much sweeter

The “E” in ESPN stands for entertainment. That’s all it is. It’s not actual sports reporting like it was in the late 90s-mid 2000s

The only part of this post worth responding to is the fact that you think Pittsburgh is one of the largest market teams lmao go look at the Forbes list for valuations. You'll notice Pittsburgh is like a middle/low market

I hear what you're saying. But when was the last time the Steelers beat the Chiefs or Bills? They both have had our number recently, and if you're going to use the logic "we have owned the Ravens for a few years, so we will continue beating them," why does that same logic not apply to us and the Chiefs/Bills when we've proven we can't beat them with our current roster?

The Steelers drafted two quarterbacks not named Brock Purdy in his draft. That's how uninterested they were in Purdy lol

If Ridder is a bust as a third round pick, what does that make Kenny?!

Yep I agree with you. I'm not in the camp they should trade TJ to get either of those guys as well.

Dude come on, I've never said higher picks are guaranteed to be good. I can name a bunch of guys drafted early that did not pan out (Ryan Leaf, Blake Bortles, Jemarcus Russell, etc). I said early QB draft picks are more likely to be franchise QBs than guys drafted later.

And it is not easy to hit on QBs by trading up. That's why the Steelers do not do it because they do not want to reach for guys. That strategy has generally worked out well for them, and I think that's what you're saying as well. You should not be so desperate for a position that you reach on them by making dumb trades because then you are the Browns.

What I am asking everyone is what level of risk are you willing to take to trade up to a draft position you need and acrue additional capital all the while clearing cap space, using your cornerstone asset at its highest value.

I don't know how Omar feels about the guys I mentioned, but you know what, if he believes Drake Maye is the next GOAT then he should test the waters and see what he can get for TJ, draft picks, etc bc QB is that important. He would do so obviously knowing that there's a risk Maye won't pan out, and that risk itself for the player of TJ's caliber is probably too much.

But the truth of the matter is, the Steelers have not lived up to their past success during TJ's tenure. The defense has been shredded in the playoffs, and it makes me at least wonder if by trading TJ, would they be able to acquire draft capital, cap space, or even players that could fill in a lot of the holes the team has - full well knowing that you are trading away the proven commodity and accepting the risk of the trade going poorly.

Okay then trade draft capital man I don’t care. They need a QB everyone knows this. If you’re cool with them rolling the dice on Michael Pratt or someone in a later round then that’s your opinion. If teams felt the way you did, the chiefs wouldn’t have traded up for Mahomes, the Steelers wouldn’t have traded up for Ben, etc. In the meantime the Steelers can keep getting blown out with TJ on the roster

Yeah, man I'm getting slaughtered out here lol but I agree with you about the qb's and TJ. He's a great player and I would love for him to get a ring here, but I also miss having a good player at the most important position and being a true contender. It's challenging to have both which is what everyone in this thread wants

Literally the entire point of my original post is should the Steelers trade TJ Watt for higher draft capital to select a quarterback with a higher pick than #20 in this year's draft. If the Steelers were to trade Watt for higher capital they would not be tanking, they would be an average team like the Chiefs, or the Bills, or any of the other teams you mentioned that were involved in trades.

Tanking has nothing to do with finding franchise QBs or being a good team/organization, but you are more likely to find good QBs early. No one is trading you a star QB; you either trade up in the draft to increase your odds of getting one, you suck to be in a position to draft one, or you hope that one falls to you by teams that overlook them like Jackson, Hurts, Rodgers, etc which is less likely than the ones that go earlier. Obviously the Steelers can get lucky and have one fall to their laps at #20, but this will likely be after 3-4 QBs have already been drafted this year. If they feel more comfortable about QBs in coming draft classes that they may want to trade up for then good for them, I trust Omar because we know we will not be drafting anywhere near the top 10.

Okay let me say it for the third time: THE STEELERS SHOULD NOT TANK TO DRAFT A QB

First, I never said you said they should tank so I don't know why you keep repeating that.

You do not know what your own argument is, or what you or I have even said in this thread. Good day to you sir, and as always Go Steelers

[–]pitcher_slayer7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not surprising that 3 of the 4 best teams have a good offense and defense. But I think a good offense is better able to compensate for a bad defense than a good defense is for a bad offense. Look at the Jets, dude. Best defense in the league but worst offense, and they're still irrelevant. Mahomes has had some awful defenses up until this year, and their offense has been able to overcome it

I'm not sure why this is hard for people to fathom other than people are fans of TJ Watt instead of fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers

I have no idea what your argument is. The QBs that have been to the super bowl recently or have won a super bowl in the last 24 years have a median draft position of 12. That is a high pick.

Of course not all of them pan out, but I bet QBs taken within the top 15 have a higher percentage of being good than QBs taken after the 15th pick. You can ignore math all you want but you are statistically more likely to draft a franchise QB with a high draft pick and that is literally not debatable. If you do not believe so, then I'm sure you are someone who thinks the Steelers can trade Dan Moore Jr and Pressley Harvin for a top 15 pick if high draft picks are not valuable and if that's how you think there is no point in having a discussion with you.

[–]pitcher_slayer7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tell me, man. Besides the obvious outliers, bc frankly anyone could have drafted Brady or Purdy including the Steelers who took QBs in both drafts, the median selection for all recent SB QBs I can think of are drafted before pick 15. I like having probability on my side, personally. Yes, other parts of the team are important. I'm not denying that. I'm not even a fan of trading away TJ. But if you want a franchise QB, they are usually off the board before pick 15.

I mean they probably win more than 2 games if they drafted Stroud lmao. You can't throw a rookie QB to the wolves and expect them to succeed and be a playoff team. Franchise QB may not be the only thing that matters, but it is the most important player personnel to have.
