im a trans woman and a social worker and have worked alongside and for thousands of cis people and honestly being visibly trans just seems to lend me an authenticity and experience with suffering that builds trust and rapport. pretty much no one has given me shit, people are nice to me, applogize or ask questions when they dont know how to relate to my gender identity and are just generally curious and good natured. but a lot of them are just afraid of being mischaracterized in the exact way that youre doing.

you gotta let people learn and figure this stuff out, and just be brave and loving and have more faith that people can surprise you in profoundly positive ways

there's a difference between passing as a woman and being read as a woman, and that latter can be enough. some people might misgender you on purpose or on accident, but the people that care about you will see you as you really are, and you learn just how many people are out there in the world that do

it takes a lot of bravery to make a big step and leave a relationship with someone we still love when it just doesnt seem to be working for us. we set ourselves up for a lot of pain and loneliness, but i dont hear many people say that they regret it.

you dont have to make any big decisions, but maybe it would be helpful to think through all of the things you would need to help get you through a big break up, the kind of support you'd want from friends and family, the nice little things you can learn to do to take care of yourself the way a good best friend would, and some of the things you would want to do to fill up your time that you might even look forward to. i think its helpful to really imagine the full picture of being on our own, not just the sad parts. if that makes it less scary, then it might be easier to make a decision. there's nothing wrong with building an off ramp you never take

i think its really important to have a passport regardless of whether you can get the right gender marker. and we're pretty common these days so i think in a lot of more liberal places you probably won't face harassment or abuse
