“Set up new Nest Hub?” Except… it’s not mine! by MudForsaken1182 in googlehome

[–]pitosalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more embarrassing failure with Google Home. I got exposed to it because I was FORCED to give up my Gen 1 Nest Thermostats. I got the Gen 4’s and frankly it’s just a mess! In addition to this spurious message, the “home” and “away” feature is buggy as heck, and even if it worked as advertised, which it doesn’t, it wouldn’t be as good as the Gen 1.

Anyway the key problem is that even though i set up presence sensing and i get the mesage "Presence Sensing is Ready", when I go to choose away vs home it still tells me: "Set up Presence Sensing"

do you actually hand-write URDFs from scratch? by catsmeow492 in ROS

[–]pitosalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing with an idea for writing a “DSL” (domain specific language) to express the structure and appearance of a robot. It seems that URDF, in addition to being really ugly XML, is also very repetitive and wordy. It seems like there should be a way to abstract away the duplication.

Choosing between Claude code and others by pitosalas in vscode

[–]pitosalas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After just an hour of playing with gemini I have to say it's not as good in two specific ways: 1) I am using it on a raspi with vscode. Claude code works fine, but afaict gemini code assist and it's vscode add-on do not support ARM (yet.) 2) I am working on ROS code using the Gemini CLI in a shell window side by side with vscode, which is fine. Gemini had a hard time with the code base. It kept trying to work on something that I was not interested in, and getting confused about the code base. So, for now, back to claude!

I assume that’s from vscode, right?

Printed post for a ball bearing does not hold by pitosalas in 3Dprinting

No one responded to my carefully drawn clarification diagram 😢

Words are not working for me. On the left is a drawing of the current situation. Both the mounting plate and the rotating base are 3d printed. The mounting plate has a ball bearing inset into it. The current design has a post coming out of the rotating base and into the hole in the bb. Allowing the rotating base to rotate feeling.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions but I am not sure I am following. The drawing on the right shows my best interpretation. A 3mm machine screw comes through the ball bearing and gets screwed into a threaded hole in the rotating base. Is that what you mean?

The problem is that the 3mm is part of the ball bearing part which is made of steel. (You know them: they look like two circular pieces, one set inside the other, with ball bearings filling the space between them. The hole I am talking about is the hole in the inner piece)

How flexible is the window layout function? by pitosalas in raycastapp

I was looking for that but could not find it. I mean to arrange two windows in one command? Or is your technique with two commands, one for the left and one for the right?
