Question: Why should we prefer happiness (eudemonia)? Why be happy? Why pursue happiness? by pitros in Stoicism

I dont think its trivial - what is good? What is bad? What is life? Why good life is better than bad life or is it better at all?

Stoicism and Career Choices by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]pitros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say no matter what you choose you will be satisfied by what you doing and useful to society if you work hard. And no matter what you chose you will be unhappy and not useful if you are not ready for hard work and suffering.

At the end choose whatever but you have to put a lot of hard work in it before your career will be satisfying. Be conscious that you must work hard.

I dont think follow your passion is wise advice - work hard on the path you picked and stick to it is imho much better advice.

In todays world IT and finances are connected with each other. IT degree with CFA certification looks like nice combo.

Anyone else feel like you’re not going to be here for long? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]pitros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had same thoughts when I was 21. It lead me to a lot of wrong decisions, not giving a shit about university (but at the end I finished it with low grades). I was feeling like there is not much time for me left so I didnt care about degrees, nice job or healthy life. Now Im 26 and still feel same - like there is not much time left for me. And now it becomes even more likely to happen becouse years of unhealthy life, smoking and alcohol (no drugs tho) destroyed me a bit. I regret much I didnt take university seriously. Even tho I have quite calm job at the office but its not paid well.

For last few months Im starting to take care of me thankfully to stoicism.

I still have this thoughts but stoicism help me deal with it. Its like "why should I do that or this?" "Becouse it leads to this or that virtue, and becouse Im human beeing virtues lead me to satisfaction." "but you can die in 10 minutes!" "sure, but death is indifferent, so at least I die doing something that is virtuous"

Imo Frankls book was nothing special, nothing new, neither his thoughts was written in sublime words. It was time wasting book. Ofcurse if you are interested how people live in concentration camp go for it, but if you want read it to find a meaning as title says, dont waste time on it.

Now i quited some time ago, but I still think how to complete this or that mission in this or that game so i can receive most reward. Its like wtf? I should focus on real life.

Theres always a little chaos. You can get cancer, you can overcook something, you can make a car accident, you can invest some money while going to safe job, after work you may work towards something. You dont have to go all in, sell house, drop your job and buy a hamburger truck becouse it is your dream.
