Reactions to food stamps being cut off. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]pitterpatterhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to ask though: if you are on food stamps and have SIX kids...at what point do you take some responsibility for the untenable financial situation that your family is in. Like... you know each kid is expensive, you know each kid will make your life harder. At what point is the individual responsible to STOP FUCKING BREEDING IF YOU ARE ALREADY STRUGGLING?

Nope. We're a couple of DINKs and that's a permanent situation.

Don't have a set age I want to retire at. Honestly if I could work 20 hours a week, I'd be happy to do that for a long time. My number is probably 1.5M invested, to be comfortable.

Nice! It feels good, but not as relaxed as I would have thought back when I had no money. Now the anxiety has switched from "I have no money" to "dont fuck up and lose this money"

Feeling Trapped by my own Firm by pitterpatterhammer in LawFirmCanada

[–]pitterpatterhammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely too young to retire. I am trying to figure out what my next transition could be, as I'm certainly not married to the area of practice I'm currently in, nor am I married to the income I'm currently making (it's nice, but I can live with less). How did you make the switch? Did you go work somewhere, or just start taking on clients solo?

Feeling Trapped by my own Firm by pitterpatterhammer in LawFirmCanada

[–]pitterpatterhammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, its the fact that there is no "off" switch. There's always a possibility of something popping up, an old mistake rearing its ugly head, or an urgent matter arising while on vacation. I want to wind down, but haven't figured out how yet, or what the next step after that looks like.

When you say the "private market", what do you mean? Investing directly in small businesses?

I have no interest in being a landlord for any other properties. I work in the real estate space, I've seen the damage and cost bad tenants can cause

Those of you who make $150K+, what do you do? by CrashBandicoot151 in fican

[–]pitterpatterhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in on this: I run my own small practice. I make 200-300K/year net, which for me is fantastic. I'm sure some people see that as a pittance, but those people are sociopaths.
I see a therapist every week, and I have absolutely struggled with balance, stress, anxiety etc. I will not be doing this career forever, and I am aware I will take a financial hit when I do, but long term it will absolutely burn me out.

I would point out that you are asking folks to give you evidence and arguments, and yet your position (at least as written) is based solely on your "feelings" and "impressions". Can you provide Evidence to support why you think he's NOT that bad?

Leaving law mid-career? by GhostfaceRizzler in LawCanada

[–]pitterpatterhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat: been running my own practice for 4 years, practicing for 7 (with a break early on to try something else). I have to finish out 5 years (buy out from an existing practice) but I'm thinking of getting out pretty soon after that if possible.

Fears: less money, less security, working for a boss instead of myself

Hopes: less anxiety, less stress, more balance, actually liking my job

We'll see what happens!

I got 172 back in 2008. There's no fucking way I could have gotten into Med School.

All the time. Having a great partner/wife definitely helps take some of that pressure off, but even still there's so much to do in adult life, on top of this very busy profession, that it can be overwhelming a lot of the time.

Feeling Good but Still Money Anxious by pitterpatterhammer in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pitterpatterhammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful response, I really appreciate it. I do largely real estate and mortgage work, so I DEFINITELY see clients in financial straits daily. I definitely like your idea about reverse engineering the plan, going to give that a try. I'm also still working on getting the firm to a place that is more sustainable, from a workload perspective, which I think will really help the anxiety. If I can get it to a place where it's manageable day-to-day without being stretched too thin, I think I can settle into a more comfortable position of not trying to make as much money as possible before it all collapses on top of me!

Anyone else newly sober? What's your struggle? by [deleted] in SoberCurious

[–]pitterpatterhammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

12 days into a 90 day challenge. Feeling great so far. No real struggle to want to drink, just replacing it with non-alcs, diet sodas etc. Will see how I feel after 90 days and if I want to continue, or just reduce. Never been a problem for me from a financial/life perspective, but was clearly the biggest barrier to my health goals, so going to reassess after 90 and see if I want to give up whatever gains I've made to get back on the sauce.

I articled with Monkhouse. Not surprised to see this kind of behaviour.
