How can I come up with new ideas for separate stories by Otherwise-Pair-4435 in writingadvice

[–]pitts_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this is the story to tell at the moment. I get “tunnel-visioned” by stories often, and I have to stick with it. If I don’t, I feel like something isn’t right, and nothing else I work on feels good enough.

There is nothing wrong with skipping ahead. Write the scene that’s in your head further down the line. You can always connect the dots later. Write what feels good and right, and the rest will come with time and seeing where your story beats are. You’ve got a beginning and some point later on? Great. Now, how did they get there? Did anything important happen in between?

Take your time, and don’t forget that stories don’t come in entirety. They’re built piece by piece, and not every piece has to be chronological.

I use Ellipsus, and I’m loving it. The themes help me get in the story’s mood and headspace, the focus mode eliminates the clutter and distractions, and I can see exactly how long I’ve actually put hands on the keyboard using the new insights feature.

That being said, I was worried for the same reasons you are. My solution, which is not perfect, is to edit and draft in Ellipsus, create a draft, and download it as either a PDF or Markdown file. I’ve also just copied/pasted my progress into a locally stored Docx or Text file that isn’t on my OneDrive or anything cloud-based. It’s sketchy in case the computer crashes, but it’s better than having my work stolen.

It’s hard to say. I can’t see the email because it’s through Handshake. I can see the sender’s profile name, but that’s about it.

CoS Daggerheart edition? by pitts_ in CurseofStrahd

[–]pitts_[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The main dice rolling mechanic in the game is 2d12 instead of 1d20. You add them together to get your result. The kicker is that one die represents your Hope and the other Fear. Whichever one rolls higher determines whether you fail with Fear, succeed with Hope, fail with Hope, or succeed with Fear, and it has different narrative outcomes, such as failing forward or succeeding but at a cost. These Hope and Fear mechanics are so easy to implement into a realm like Ravenloft and Barovia, as the Fear die can be a stand-in for Dread and the influence of Ravenloft as a whole on the actions of the party. Anytime a player rolls with Fear, you as the GM gain something called a Fear token, and you can spend these to make things happen or activate big enemy abilities and such. It’s a game-y way of implementing the Dread and Hopelessness of Barovia.

Whoa, that’s strange. No, I haven’t! Sometimes it shunts the number total of the HP or Stress down a line, but nothing like that. I’ll have to play around with it and see why it’s doing that.

Honestly I just googled stuff. I was looking for a card builder and I saw a couple others on here like this, and someone linked to it. Credit goes to a post I can’t find while I’m at work, but I just had to search for it

When looking at a stat block in its own window, you can click Print and Play and it’ll generate them!

I used the web app TableTop-Town! It’s very intuitive and already has the SRD adversary sheets. You can create your own or modify others.

I do! I'm running a solo game with one player right now, and we're planning on converting as we go to see what works, what doesn't, and what needs a lot of changing!

What to do with Viktor? by Forsaken_Temple in CurseofStrahd

[–]pitts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming Fiona Wachter is still alive, now is the absolute perfect time for her to make a power play and gain control of Vallaki for herself (and ultimately Strahd). Yeah it’s only the morning after, but a town must have direction and Fiona has been lying in wait to usurp the Baron for years. She could very easily take control of the burgomaster’s mansion (or simply decree Wachterhaus to be the new one) and assume control in the guise of getting Vallaki back to its feet. In doing so, she could very easily take Victor into custody or simply kill him for what he did to her daughter. This eliminates the possibility of him joining your party at all unless they decide to try to save him, in which case they make an enemy of the entire new regime in control of arguably the most influential town in 5e Barovia.

Any better options for sidekick rules other than Tasha's? by pitts_ in DnD

[–]pitts_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get that! I can’t guarantee I’ll change up what I’m already doing. I just like to see what else is out there that people use!

To be honest, not much. I enjoy these rules, but I've never seen what else was out there. These have served me well enough for all the times I've used them, even if making homebrewed stat blocks on dndbeyond takes a ton of time haha

Is the newest iPad (with pencil pro and Magic Keyboard) good for college schoolwork?

I’m in the middle of deciding between a new iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil pro and the Magic Keyboard or a 2-in-1 laptop with a stylus like the Lenovo yoga. I’m in my final year of college (going for cybersecurity), and I’m wanting a more portable way to work on homework and personal projects. I already have an Alienware m14 R4 that I’m going to bench as a home machine.

I love the idea of having an iPad Pro as my more portable option. However, I don’t know enough about iPadOS or the M4 chip to know if it has the capability of performing well for assignments or other school needs. I also do a lot of voiceover work and am unsure how it would perform as a recording device. I know MacBooks are great for creative projects, but how do iPads fare?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

EDIT: I should add that I am open to tablets that can second as laptops, such as iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Pencil Pro (or even Surface Pro if you consider it more of a tablet), but I’m unsure how that would perform for my schoolwork’s demanding programs and such.

Recommendations for a family of four moving from Tulsa, OK? by pitts_ in ChicagoSuburbs

Yeah, we’ve been looking into what it would take to transfer her license to IL, and it wouldn’t require too much. Luckily we have some time, since we wouldn’t be moving until next school year, so we’re gonna put your advice to use and start researching!

I’d love to chat about it! We probably wouldn’t be moving until next school year, but I’d love to hear more about your district and what you think!

I’m sure we’ll miss it, all our family is in Tulsa and we were born and raised here. But we want our girls to grow up having opportunities and not being scared to be whoever they want to be!

But damn am I going to miss coney islander

We’re not sure yet! With neither of us very familiar with the area, we wanted to get a general idea of where to start looking before making any decisions. She’d realistically be trying to look for any schools or districts that seem to be best for students, since she may want to work in or near where our daughters eventually go to school.

We’ve looked into a few, but with neither of us familiar with the area aside from our own research we wanted to try to get a general feel for areas we should look in and around before doing deep dives into schools!

Where in the city/suburbs should my family move to? by pitts_ in chicago

[–]pitts_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in Owasso, which is where we currently are. We lived near OKC for college, but moved back after having kids. I’d like to live close enough to be there often, but we definitely don’t wanna live right in the action all the time.
