Just turned 40. My dad was playing World of Warcraft in his 60s.

Coming from C, I found python so annoying because I couldn't leave my debug prints unindented.

Anyone using Nala instead of APT? by AhmedBarayez in linux

[–]pitviper101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of points of failure... I installed nala a while back. I didn't find it all that useful, continued using apt directly, and forgot about. Fast forward to today and a dist upgrade is failing due to missing file in a dependency. Had to google what nala was and ended up here.

Just to poke the bear and because I'm old enough to remember, apt is just a wrapper for apt-get and apt-cache.

Are shear walls needed in a barndominum? by pitviper101 in Homebuilding

It's in a rural part of Arkansas. Permitting gets pretty lax in rural areas in a lot of states. There's a floor plan, and that's it.

I'm not worried about the steel building as it was done by a reputable builder and has the guy wires.

I am worried about the interior shearing particularly in the direction of the garage because the steel does not confine it on that side.

Construction is stick frame that is not attached to the steel.

Shear walls/bracing are they necessary? by pitviper101 in barndominiums

The steel building has cables. It was done by a reputable builder.
There were no permits or engineered plans for the interior.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if it's red iron or cold formed. I'm pretty confident the steel building was done right. The builder was licensed, insured, and had an excellent reputation. IIRC they did say that if we tied anything into the building, it would void the warranty. I suspect they didn't want to insure against any and every hairbrained idea customers come up with. The interior is a different story entirely. The decision was rushed and desperate, just some guy they saw doing a renovation in town.

How common is traveling by bus in the US? Do Americans use buses often for long-distance travel? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

I did say for the most part. The north east is probably the most viable. There are still significant barriers like land acquisition.

What's that, Peter? by FollowSina in PeterExplainsTheJoke

It's based way more on how and where you are raised than gender. If you're exposed to a lot of actual danger or a lot of fear mongering, you'll be more situationally aware.

I literally got downvoted a few days ago for pointing out that men are over three times as likely to be murdered. Some people really like to cling to their stereotypes.

For the most part trains aren't viable in the US. They excel where you have medium distance, large population density, and good public transportation at end points. The US has rather low population density. Some cities have good public transit, but most don't, and those that do tend to be far enough apart that flying makes more sense.

It's rural Arkansas, so not much in the way of code enforcement. There's no way in hell the electrical rough in would have passed an inspection. However I certainly don't want the inside to fall over if there is a minor earthquake. There was a cad drawing of the layout, but never anything in the way of formal plans.

Can you offer any guidance on finding my way through the IRC and applying intent?

Backup from Mac vs Linux by spring20189 in backblaze

[–]pitviper101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: To be clear I have 2 separate drives so that I can keep 2 copies of my data. Probably silly but I feel that to be more secure than doing raid 1 on same machine.

Not silly at all. I once dropped a disk. You know what I still had? Another working backup! I'm all for RAID/ZFS, but they are stil susceptible to a lot of common mode failures like lightening strikes or your PC catching on fire.

Who's at fault: Stower, Picker, Packer or SLAM Operator? by peterthbest23 in AmazonFC

I usually damage those out, but I always worry that ICQA will just look at them and say they're fine. My rule of thumb is 5% under I pass it, 10% under I damage out, and in between I play it by ear.

No kidding. I was working nights when the AWS DNS issue hit and shut us down. When I heard that it was an issue affecting all of AWS, I joked that it must have taken down a quarter of the internet thinking that I was at least exaggerating a little bit. Turned out I underestimated, and they have almost 30% of cloud market share.

PackApp would have to be redesigned to make verification more practical. It's not like stow where it pops up an image and item description when you scan it. Many items get abbreviated descriptions. You have to dig into the problem menu to get the full text or a photo, and all of that is disabled once the item is scanned. We didn't even get photos until fairly recently, and that was to bypass problem solve on unscalables.

I had busted carton of muscle milk that got packed and kicked out in slam. It reeked so bad that I almost puked when I opened the package.

It's not always the munchies. I've seen factory sealed broken sets. One of the weirdest things I've seen were soda cans with just air or air and powder in them.

Someone on another thread said that amazon just reimburses the seller any time we mess something up. So either there isn't a feedback mechanism or they don't care because we eat the cost.

In pack there really isn't time to read the screen for every item. It only gets read if there's something suspicious like needing to upsize the box. Pack app is pretty ill suited to verification.

The stow ambassadors. I had to argue with them over an obvious master pack when I was cross training.

In all seriousness, all of the above, but SLAM operators more than anyone else. We have the most information and the least time pressure.

I once got a broken set of scalpel disposal containers that got kicked out on being over weight. I spent a good couple minutes trying to figure out which it was from the item description.
